The opposition MMD has dismissed media reports that the party has entered into an alliance with ADD and UPND with a view to endorse UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema, for the 2015 presidential poll.
Yesterday, some Members of Parliament (MPs) from the MMD and ADD announced the formation of an alliance and backed UPND to ensure victory for Mr Hichilema.
The alliance has since selected MMD Lunte MP, Felix Mutati, to work with Mr Hichilema with the hope to achieve a government of national unity.
Speaking at the press briefing held at the Party Secretariat in Lusaka today, MMD Mwandi MP, Michael Kaingu, said the purported alliance is false and does not reflect the position of the MMD.
“Mutati and some of our MPs spoke in their capacity as individuals. The official position is that MMD has not entered into an alliance with any political party,” Dr Kaingu said.
Dr Kaingu said former President, Rupiah Banda, is the sole 2015 presidential candidate and appealed to the Zambian people not to experiment with ‘tested’ leadership.
Speaking at the same meeting, President Rupiah Banda’s spokesperson, Lucky Mulusa, charged that Mr Mutati and his colleagues are allegedly positioning themselves to be adopted in the 2016 general elections.
Mr Mulusa said it was hypocritical for MMD MPs to endorse a presidential candidate from another political party.
Mr Mulusa, who is former MMD Solwezi Central MP, clarified that embattled MMD president, Nevers Mumba, was assisting the party to campaign for Mr Banda.
He said Dr Mumba is aware of this development and he would be sponsored by his party in 2016 and not for the forth-coming presidential poll.
Meanwhile, Mr Mulusa has announced that the MMD would tomorrow afternoon launch the national campaign at Mahati Magandhi Primary School grounds.
Mr Mulusa said his party is not threatened by other politicians who have already kick-started their official campaigns because the grounds are ripe for the former ruling party.

I am being convinced everyday that we need a complete turn around in Zambia. These 2015 elections will not cut it. They are already proving to be so polarizing and divisive. Endorsing HH is not the answer. HH will only rule for 16 months before the next elections and how helpful will this be to Zambia? The Engineer and others, take it easy. Be advised that the Republic of Zambia is full of electoral surprises and intrigues. The political landscape too is not yet defined. For that you have to be patient and wait until a few days before 20th January. Remember that political alliances are still being formed and re-formed, defined and re-defined. Politicians will join this alliance and abandon it for another or back to their original parties. The candidates themselves will become stronger or shoot themselves in the foot as they are campaigning. Meanwhile voters will be enjoying the evaluation and the spectacle while candidates convince themselves that they are popular. Finally all but one of the candidates will be a sorry sight on 21st January, hiding behind the ever green tale of rigging.
