UPND president Hakainde Hichilema greets Solwezi residents

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has promised to legalize the famous political Makalaguzu market which is situated at Zambia railways land in Choma.

Few months ago, Zambia railways issued an eviction notice to over two thousand marketers conducting business 50 meters away along the line of rail to facilitate rehabilitation works.

Mr Hichilema said that the market provided employment and business opportunities to the unemployed citizens adding that attempts to evict them would promote poverty levels among them.

Speaking at Choma Trades Training Institute grounds where he landed to greet his supporters en-route from Livingstone , Mr Hichilema noted that there was need for proper and decent trading places for the marketeers and street vendors saying they contribute positively to the growth of the national economy.

“I know that the market is very political and I can assure you that come next month when you vote UPND into office, I will ensure that I legalize the market, all the vendors will be trading where they are now and no one will be chased from the streets,” he said.

Mr Hichilema also pledged to give farmers cattle loans to enable them boost their agriculture activities so as to enhance increased productivity in the country.

He said each individual would receive 16 herds of cattle to start with and will be a pass on programme.

Mr.Hichilema pointed out that once UPND was voted into power would lift the wage freeze, employment freeze and reduce retirement age from the current 65 to 55 years so as to allow youths access employment opportunities.

[pullquote]“I do not want to say too much, God has made a decision. We have tried so many times but his time God has decided that I become the president of this country,” Mr Hichilema said.[/pullquote]

Mr Hichilema said he was humbled for the overwhelming support he was currently receiving countrywide.

“Am humbled by the support my party is currently receiving compared to the previous elections we have had,” he said.

And in Livingstone, Mr Hichilema promised to build more markets across the country if his party forms Government in January next year.

Mr Hichilema said UPND understood how much suffering people in the country were going through and pledged to empower them through the creation of good and decent trading places across the country.

Speaking in Livingstone on Saturday when he toured various markets in Ellaine Britel, Lubuyu, Maramba and Ngwenya, Mr Hichilema said vendors would also be allowed to go about their businesses undisturbed if he was elected as Zambia’s President.

Mr Hichilema, who arrived at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula international airport at 14:35 hours in a hired Chopper and accompanied by his vice president Richard Kapita , told cadres who had been waiting from 8 hours at the airport, that time had come for the UPND take over Government because it was God’s decision.

He also featured on Musi-oa-tunya Radion where he pledged to lower the cost of living and improve the education system and health care in the country.

“I do not want to say too much, God has made a decision. We have tried so many times but his time God has decided that I become the president of this country,” Mr Hichilema said.

Mr Hichilema said as a farmer himself, he would also ensure that the price of mealie meal was reduced in order to make it more affordable for the poor.

He also said his Government would strike off the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) if it continued to harass motorists especially taxi drivers, saying that the taxi drivers had families to take care of.

Mr Hichilema also re-iterated that his Government would also reinstate nurses who were fired last year.

The UPND Leader appealed to his members to be united and take this month’s campaign seriously saying every one of them was a campaign manager.

“Let us be united and take this campaign seriously. We do not want to go into Government to look after ourselves, we want to be in Government so that we take care of the people,” Mr Hichilema said.

He said the UPND was going to work with everyone including those in the opposition that were interested in seeing that there was change of Government.

Mr Hichilema also appealed to the Livingstone City Council (LCC) to give people who applied for plots in the city two years ago their pieces of land.

The UPND leader later went to Senior Chief Mukuni’s Palace where he had private talks with the chief.

Chief Mukuni’s senior Headman Dominic Balengwe presented the Mukuni development plan and pledged to support the opposition leader.

Headman Balengwe said the people in Mukuni area would give Mr Hichilema all the support in the forth coming presidential by election.

He asked Mr Hichilema to consider the Mukuni trust development plan once voted into office.

  1. Go my President go BUT DONT OVER PROMISE or is it the MEDIA tht is exegarrating your promises ???.

Sata & Kaseba FORMED PF and Lungu is a NON- Starter.

EL is stupid, HOW CAN HE BRING ALL THOSE THUGS including Father Bwalya. EL has just to be HUMILIATED, MOLISTICATED & put into Political shelves. Mai Guy has been doing politis for decades, Lungu & THOSE MINISTERS r just trying to secure their jobs.

EL is a docile person & CRIMINALS like Nsanda CONTROL HIM

    • Mr HH,
      What do care for most?
Is it just the votes and not the safety of the voters?
Honestly, you cannot allow people to trade 50 meters away from the rail line.
You also have u-turned on the vendors.

    • i was just about to state the same. HH, don’t over promise, keep your agenda compact and focus on important issues such as reforming education, creating employment and creating a local robust economy…be tactical and have a plan which when implemented will impact millions across the country. Stating you will legalize a market makes you sound small to an intellect, but as we know in Zambia it’s all about the vote. Good luck.

    • Who the hell is in charge of media for HH? He need to stop that language of “promise”. No LT or anything similar need to discredit HH’s message.

    • HH has gone lunatic. How on earth can he condone illegality? Just to get into power he is doing everything that is illogic, illegal or pure madness. God forbidden he becomes president, every Tom dick and harry will illegally occupy land and he will go on legalising. Does he know why Railways have land?

    • In his desparation young HH will even legalise homoexuality, Chamba and prostitution as a form of Job creation and broadening the tax base. Clueless man! And which God is He talking about. When Did he become a prophet

    • I urge all landless workers at his farm to occupy his prime land as he is going to legalise illegal occupations. Do the same on Maureen Mwanawasa houses, farm and offices. Same goes for Dipak Patel, Suresh Desai, Chilupi’s CEC land, Malimba Masheke old Mumba Road farm. Your future president has given you permit for lawlessness. This is Freemason given opportunity to earmark and grab land. Taxi drivers, street vendors your president has spoken. No fines for over speeding, no fines for parking haphazardly, no chasing you from the street and no reprimand for littering and urinating all around. From Sata to Hyena Hyena.

    • HH, Don’t Promise too much. talk less and take action. People have heard these stories before. be the true change to Zambia.

    • I have said it over and over again.. the political syllabus is the same.. HH wouldnt have been the first one to write a diffrent version.. well He tried the previous two 3elections but if you studying the wrong material there is no way you can pass an exam…

    • Don’t try to act clever on us you pf cloniesr. That market has been in existence since the 70’s and why are you trying to talk about safety now?
Look at what has happened to ZR land all over the country.Who allocated them?Go to Monze and Mazabuka for example, the pf gave families next to the rail line.So you expect HH during campaigns to say he will remove them? That would be folly.

    • HH go Boss,

There is nothing wrong in what he is promising. We have been promised dogs s.hitting flying birds and we voted. Some says he will let people earn a living you cry foul. Just keep trying to sort out your senseless hooliganism in PF. Infact its good so these savages keep up hope in PF so they don’t have where to go after the ballot. Not You Pee En Dee please

    • Again LT has misquoted HH on the market issue.

      Here is HH statement:

“Trading in the streets is dangerous. The sanitation situation is very bad. But I understand you have to earn a living because you are jobless. You are earning a living at that Makalungu market which is very dangerous as it is near a railway line. People in Lusaka are also trading along the rail line in Kamwala area because they have to earn a living. But we need to address the situation. Zambian has plenty of land and job opportunities. We shall not chase you like thieves. Where we feel the situation is not very good and safe, we shall offer you alternatives places,” said Hichilema.

This is the true version not what LT is reporting. HH is being realistic.Alternative places for traders to be found before…

    • In these trying times, only ZWD will give you the truth as it happens.

ZR, LT and Post will always concoct stories. Look at PF saga, ZWD has been spot on on the matter.

    • Guy Scott is the future; black people cannot run a country; give us your companies; we shall hire u; pay u peanuts and make a killing of a profit when exporting minerals

    • This is a freemason who is so desperate that he can even say the word God today ,i have never heard him mention Jesus name.

Go away satanist do not mislead the nation.

    • I was also confused, but this is what he said.

    • Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has promised to resolve the land impasse faced by the traders at Choma’s Makalanguzu market, near Zambia Railways.

Addressing a huge crowd that welcomed him in Choma yesterday, Mr. Hichilema said it was pointless to remove people from trading in certain areas without giving them alternatives.

We shall not…

    • The following were the final Presidential election results as at September 22,2011:-

      Michael Sata 994,000

      RB 808,596

      HH 350,000

      OTHERS 41,083

HH requires to gather three times more votes during January 2015 By-Election for him to win considering that the same voters who voted in 2011 are the same ones to vote in January,2015 Vichitika!!!!

  2. I don’t believe HH will give Zambians their much cherished constitution. Reason is that he is an interested party in the 2016 elections. He will try to delay and play tricks. RB will be doing his second and final term if he wins this one. In RB, Zambia has the rare chance to finally enact a people driven constitution. Such a chance has never presented itself and it is up to Zambians to be rational enough and make the correct choice. Let’s use this transition wisely

    • I thought HH had some form of education which would enable him do politics and campaigns differently.
He is going the SATA way now.

    • In your view who should we give the benefit of doubt, the PF? The ones who asked us to show them an animal driven constitutions? Like all other HH sceptics I have come to realise that you are genetically preconditioned to hate HH. The biasness in your reasoning is blatant and stupid.

    • But waste time in Southern Province where you already have automatic votes…… you don’t have time tata, go to Luapula, Central, Muchinga and Northern provinces now before the dust settles in PF. Once the dust settles in PF it will be difficult for you to do a good job in these areas. Go now, don’t waste time in Southern, everyone will vote for you there anyway………be strategic mwaiche.

    • Its a problem when HH skeptics only rely on one source of information. Try to read widely and let brains guide your reasoning not your emotions perverted by Mmembe’s tribal bigotry.

HH is the most realistic politician at the moment. He is not going into politics to enrich himself but to help the people of Zambia.

      Fact :
HH is not a failure like most politicians are. Most of them would have been worse off had it not been politics which boosted their income.
HH will deliver the constitution without a shadow of a doubt.

HH will build alternative better markets for people before evicting them from the streets and dangerous places near the rail lines.

Why has PF failed to build better markets for the people? Why has PF failed to remove street vendors? Answer; PF niba chimbwi…

  3. Underachievers always seek to have obstacles removed for them, successful folks use obstacles to sharpen their focus, fortitude and navigating skills.

HH is actually weakening our street traders by promising them an illegality and wrongly teaching them to expect things handed on a platter. In Zambia we desperately need to learn to work with the laws, rules and regulations -not against them-if we want to improve

    • @Enka, what do you expect from a desperate person. Since 1964 with every new president we have gone down down and down. Icilema is a desperate chap.

    • HH does not only want to promote illegality by allowing people to trade on Zambia Railways land. He is telling everyone loud and clear that though he was against late President Michael Sata’s decision to appoint UPND ministers in a PF government and his party demonised UPND appointees, it will be okay for him to appoint MMD MPs in his so-called Government of National Unity. What inconsistency and a charade from HH!!!

  4. My dear Pabulo what are you saying? Who do you think is fit for plot one? Very confused. HH must speak the language people understand in each locality. Intellectuals must read the upnd manifesto. The majority of Zambians are not educated. Most marketeers can not understand economic terminologies apart from addressing their pressing needs using the language they understand. What did Sata tell people? It was what people wanted to hear. And gave him a vote. You must be very dull to conclude hh that way. HH as a president will have people (ministers and expert planners) attending to all areas of concern. Chosa hang over ya chimbwi no plan the late. Wake up!

    • Speaking a language people understand! Do Zambian understand lies, inconsistency and illegalities? This starts to sound like Sata. There must be a difference with people of a caliber of HH. Since I am not a marketer or street vendor, what is HH promising those of us who are not in these categories. I smell desperation in the economist – HH.
UPND and HH – repackage the messaging and reach out to many people. Let your mechanism start working, foot soldiers, media etc.

  5. “HH promises to egalise an illegal Choma Market on Zambia Railways land”

All of my post secondary school education has been american. So I cannot definitively say that the word “egalise” is illegal. Ngelezi speaking, that is. But I just don’t know. I’m still a bit queasy about the word.

  6. Other side, there is nothing wrong with Homosexuality,it’s a human mind decision and you are not God to judge others.

Also prostitution is a source of income as jobs are very hard to get by, so I hope brothels will be legalised one day in Zambia, good business.

  7. I agree with everyone else, yes let HH focus on a few promises tactically not getting overwhelmed, after all the ball is in his coat now as he got no competition. Please HH slow down and just emphasise on points, focus.

    HH forward 2015!

    • When the world has moved to capitalism HH is taking Zambia back to socialism. Zambia seems to be cursed. With every new president, we go one step forward and 5 steps backward.

    • It is his father’s land that he will give away free to illegal occupants? If he is so concerned why cannot he give his farm land in Choma to the illegal occupants? He is a disaster from the word go. Short-sighted moron.

  8. No direction too bad no campaign massages confusion only and people accept that instead of saying i will build you a new market hoping people are reading between the lines this is shocking the level of desperation in UPND

  9. In Lusaka business houses have erected structures within the 50 meter of the Zambia Railways land by Kamwala and residents have built houses within the same zone. In the industrial Area they have even closed off parts of the Rail line.

We need order and stop two faced people. If you allow it in one place let it be uniform or don’t allow it at all.

    VIVA HH

  10. HH knows who the voters are, and the voters must be assured of a livelihood after he becomes president. ZR is a money pit, they have already squandered the eurobond and are asking for more!

    • will see about the votes you are talking about,HH is a capitalist who shouldn’t be given a chance to rule this country,he is going to auction Zambia just like Chiluba did (communist who turned Capitalist) he is only interested in auctioning the remaining government owned institutions, just like he helped in the privatization of the mines and other companies.

you should be able to read between the lines.ZR was destroyed by the MMD,rail concessions in Africa has never benefited the locals or the owners of the rail infrastructure.do you research

  11. HH must watch his mouth when he gets on the podium. The promises he makes will come to haunt him!! Th guys spearheading the his campaig are sleeping and ill advising him. He should tone down on populist promises. See where they got one Ukwa! This a bread and butter campaign and he should tackle those issues. rather promise to move the vendors in designated places to bring about order and sanity in the country. Don’t wreck an opportunity you have been given on a silver platter.

Where has he promised what you are claiming ba Lusaka Times?

  13. The retirement age must be 55 its funny how someone can implement 65 becouse even sata was just suggesting 65 we have a very funny constitution how can one man change such a big thing which calls for normal and constructive debate God help zambia

  14. He will legalize marijuana in the end. he is just promising anything he sees people he is talking to finds comfortable. because he was at an illegal market he had to promise them they’ll be legalized. next he will find a large group of marijuana users and he will promise them will be legalized. if prostitutes were a large community, he would have promised them something too.

    • You are very silly and scarily the reflection of the voters we have in Zambia. Please re read the article and answer the following comprehension questions.

      1) Did hichelema state that he would legalise the illegal market?
      2) If yes in question number 1 please quote the statement that proves so

  15. Honestly, do you expect anything new from this chancer HH? Just look at his campaign messages so far, very hollow and unrealistic. If indeed he is the man he claims, let him tell the youths how he intends to create jobs. On mine taxes, he has said nothing. On agriculture not even a word.
So that why he is so scared of Edgar Lungu and PF again. But people have already decided, its LE on 20th January 2014 period.

    • Have you been to any of his campaigns or do you mean the hollow reporting of the zambian media? Learnt to seek factual data and compare information to come to an informed decision

  16. Poor reporting on the part of LT. Could we please get the quoted statement where Hichilema said he would actually legalise the illegal market? Even reporters are just as mediocre and unprofessional as the ruling party. But can you blame them? If your leader is a pleb you do not expect anything more than that in the led people. Zambia is need of a peaceful revolution that will see the replacement of the illiterate and self interested few with the new informed, educated and hardworking honest leaders. As I have said in my previous posts, come 20th january Zambians should do the right thing

  17. Why is it that most bloggers here are discussing wrong message given by LT? The message was clear and not what is reported hear.

    • Lusaka Times are doing a ‘hit job’ on behalf of the Muchinga mafia. They are making up their own stories to paint HH in bad light.

  18. SO the PF distributed illegal land to squatters, and the same PF government is allowing ZRL to evict the squatters on the same land…I think this reasoning is flawed.

If HH decides to give squatters a blank cheque, I doubt the chaos that will arise in government accounting and tendering circles. Already he promised 90% of government contract to go to “Zambians” if not his party sympathisers, which in turn will politicise the contract with shoddy works reminiscent of MMD reign.

I believe Zambian can add two ad two with easy, unless they chose to expreriment.

    • Nice try with your play with words but HH did NOT say he will legalise the market. The market should never have been there in the first place so UPND & HH are offering to find a better place before anyone can be evicted. HH is merely giving us solutions here, therfore not wise to discourage him or his efforts. You can choose to be part of the solution or leave him alone.

    • Lets look at this pragmatically, HH offer 90% of tenders to Zambians Good for the contractor but 1st things 1st the current govt offered 20% of contracts but we heard so many cases of not being able to finish the works or abandoned projects or poor works done contract cancelled etc. What do you expect of that 90%. HH being a learned person i expect proper reasoning.
-Do Zambian’s have the capacity to carry out the contracts in questions? If not what can we do to empower them to do these works.
What we need as a nation is to build capacity. Firstly learn to build toilet, schools, hospitals then the bigger projects.
We are not doing ourselves justice by saying i will do this or that!
I will reduce mealie meal prices? Tell us the how? Only a dull person can say such as open statement…

  19. Have you noticed that the UPND campaign messages are not different from PF messages of 2008 and 2011? UPND please keep to your manifesto. Street vending in its current from needs to be obliterated from our country please no politics of appeasement

    • The City Councild are working on removing vendors then under 5 says i will legalise it. What else will he legalise. Use your brains. He has jumped into the boat!!! Country men and women be careful. Our contry may be privatised with such utterances

  20. Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has promised to resolve the land impasse faced by the traders at Choma’s Makalanguzu market, near Zambia Railways.

Addressing a huge crowd that welcomed him in Choma yesterday, Mr. Hichilema said it was pointless to remove people from trading in certain areas without giving them alternatives.

We shall not…

  21. “I do not want to say too much, God has made a decision. We have tried so many times but his time God has decided that I become the president of this country,” Mr Hichilema said.”

When someone is too much of self. they is a great danger that such a person should never be given instruments of power. Who dares say that God has decided, first which god? We ddn’t hear that god. Which radio station or TV station did this god announce? Desperate action calls for desperate measure, just because you were told that you should mention god in your campaign then god this god that. HH tell us which god? Ngawapepa utulubi or you worship mammon then ati god. You will be waked Stop putting god in your silly politics. Tell us HH were do you congregate? Bloggers help us trace the church were HH…

  22. HH is no different from Lungu as they dont care about us voters neither do they have credible policies to better the zambian people. Lungu should be arrested and charged…Guy Scott should man up and put this nonsense to a stop. Its bad publicity for our country

  23. What is interesting here is that HH has certainly learnt the low-life politics; promise the sky and the masses will fall for it. However what concerns me why should he promise to legalize the illigel market? How is that different from Sata? He has an opportunity to re-boot Zambia back to law based governance, if he chooses to. And by the way, God HAS YET to speak. We will know on 20 January 2015, and all the best for you and Zambia.

  24. Now HH is gone mad. Next he will promise that the illegal Homosexuality will be legal in Zambia. Really this is what an under 5 can promise.

  25. What on earth is this desperate man HH trying to lie left right center. Now that the people of Zambia have made it very clear that Edagr Lungu is the PF president and 6th Republican President, the plans of the enemy have been laid bare.
The Cartel has been squashed and the opposition have no direction. Let the PF rallies, the peoples’ rallies begin
Viva Edgar Lungu viva pa Bawatoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    • Have the PF finished their second round of voting? If yes, then the campaigns start.
Though I have a very bad feeling concerning PF chances. HH has better chance if only he can be more pragmatic and enlist the confidence of the masses through clear cut policies which state the “hows” of his implementations.

  26. HH, stop hallucinating man! Your lies are too obvious and so far you have even forgotten the million lies and empty promises you have made in 3 weeks. Is this the so called economist? Please someone help me!!
Please give us space. Abene ba ku State House ba Edgar Lungu nabesa.
Edgar Lungu and PF fyeeeee takuli naumbi bane

  27. Poor Lusaka Times you are so desperate that you are now making up stories. Please stop this nonsense. It has no resemblance to the speeches HH made in Choma and Livingstone. Only an i.d.io.t will believe the shallowness of this poorly written hit job! And there are quite a lot going by the nonsense on this thread.

  28. Well, the Patriotic Front candidate may marginally win this election if they are lucky. But it won’t be easy. And if they do, it will equally be very difficult for them to hold on to that power beyond 2016. One time, Edgar Lungu was boasting that the Patriotic Front will rule for more than 27 years. Today, we can challenge him that it won’t; it’s wishful thinking on his part. The Patriotic Front will be lucky to win the January 20, 2015 presidential election. If they win, it is not because of their popularity or strength. It will simply be because of the weaknesses of the opposition. If the UPND was not a regional party, a Bantustan party, it’s victory would have been assured in this election. But equally, it won’t be easy for them because they have done nothing to extend the influence…

  29. LT, How much would it cost you to simply report the truth? Do you realise that UNTRUTHS can come to HAUNT you sooner or later? The bloggers will simply walk away as they laugh at you. Ask Mpombo how he got himself where he is at the moment. He started with enjoying himself over things which were NOT even WORTHY for the position he held. Hope you do not live to regret.

  30. Hey, now I understand why LT REPORTS like this — Couldn’t believe it when I was told that LT is an EXTENSION OF THE POST, Wooow. The Post even sponsors some people to paint HH black. Very interesting indeed and easy to understand.

  31. By Maliko Ila Lubu.

I have never seen a man so vile so vindictive, so churlish as Mmembe. In that man’s heart is resident evil that can not be explained in an article. Run A Party he used these words ….”If the UPND was not a regional party, a Bantust

    From Ila Lubu.

I have never seen a man so vile so vindictive, so churlish as Mmembe. In that man’s heart is resident evil that can not be explained in an article. If you happen to have the misfortune of crossing his path in a wrong way – real or imaginary- you are in the deep. If Mmembe was all you had in sight and you were drowning in quicksand, he would not give a damn. The man is such a sadist that sometimes I think, no I am convinced, that something terrible happened to him in the past that he harbors so much grudge, so much…

  32. Borrowed article continued:
Mmembe is hate filled to an extent where he loses his faculties. After all he is the man with the ‘big microphone and a big mouth’ when you on the other hand you are just a mouth. You don’t have a daily newspaper to offer a response to his scathing attacks.
At one point he didn’t like Sata that much and was the recipient of scathing attacks from Mmembe right until the UPND PF pact broke up. Recently he had to dedicate his editorial to gloat about how forgiving he was. It is pathetically superfluous.
HH has changed, he is more inclusive. People’s attitude towards HH have chaged and they have seen through the lies Mmembe has been peddling. He has never been a triblist. What happened is the work of a creative evil mind. If HH is not called tribalist, it is his…

  33. If HH is not called tribalist, it is his wealth under attack or he is a mason. HH did not knell to Mmembe and so he will be bombarded with relentless attacks in the Post in the coming days. He will start by saying that all those that are endorsing HH are B-word. When he sees other prominent individuals endorsing he will either say it is cosmetic or he will call those that endorse all sorts of names including being thieves. Mostly northerners who will endorse HH will be called thieves with headlines like ‘thieves are regrouping in UPND’. As HH’s popularity grows he will have a ‘nuclear weapon,’ and it will be HH’s caught with girlfriend! This of course will be a fake girlfriend but he will have photoshopped pictures. That is how appalling this evil man is.
