Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Christopher Yaluma has acknowledged that the 25 ngwee reduction in the price of fuel is insignificant especially that there has been no reduction in the price of fuel for a long time.

Mr Yaluma says he will sit down with the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to understand what arithmetic they used to arrive at the 25 ngwee reduction in fuel prices.

He says they will have to review the reduction and see whether the arithmetic used was tailored at impacting on the motorists in the country.

Mr. Yaluma says the people of Zambia deserve a fair reduction that will be felt by the people and not the 25 ngwee which may have little or no impact.

He however, points out that he is yet to understand how the ERB arrived at the 25 ngwee reduction before issuing a comprehensive statement.

Mr Yaluma has further reiterated government’s commitment to reduce the high cost of living for the people of Zambia.

  1. 25ngwee, did anyone talk about that fuel at the convention in Kabwe? Who is allowing these PF back into their offices anyway? It is better they focus on their president than, we have less than 50 days, we deal with that fuel pricing in February with new government.

    • When increasing fuel prices ERB and direction from the Minister are efficiently fast and reasons are straightforward i.e. crude price & kwacha to dollar exchange rate movements. Now the Minister surely thinks most Zambian are dull. You can fool some people some of the time. But you cant fool all the people all the time.

We need a major reshuffle of cabinet come Jan/Feb 2015 so that Ministers can be promptly responsive to such national matters which seriously impact livelihoods.

  2. When did we start complaining about 1) non reduction of fuel prices in the face of over 30% reduction in whole sale prices of crude oil 2) the approximately 3% reduction in pump prices effected by ERB? Anyway, better late than never but please come up with more serious findings after you visit ERB Mr. Minister. This will cost PF the 2015 elections #waumfwa

    • This minister is renowned for his folly…its their greed and corruption that had caused these bottle necked….they promised to streamline the procurement and distribution but their greed got their better of them….this is the selfsame thing happening at RDA they inflating contracts.

  3. So what are you doing about it? You don’t Zambia’s fuel is the most expensive in the region? One would have thought, having established that fact you would have proceeded to reduce the fuel further. Why are we not surprised, you are Sata’s minister!!!!! (That says volumes).

  4. Honestly,a nation like like zambia is now being taken for granted by these geedy politician. How can they reduce fuel by 0.25 ngwee when the feedstock on the world market has reduced to it’s record low of us $70 from us $ 120 per barrell. Is it because they think zambian are so dull or can’t follow world events and news? The PF government is the worst and most useless party to form government which is just there to fatten their bellies and pockets which are never full.WOKE UP zambia it’s time to remove these unrealistic bunch of politicians without a human heart. If kenya can reduce fuel by over a dollar, why is it so impossible with this government? This cancer of corruption in this government will eat them up at a later stage.Remember that people have limits and i can foresee…

    • Conduct your research very well. In as much as the price of crude oil has dropped , the same cannot be said of the exchange rate between the US$ and the Zambian Kwacha. This are the two major factors that determines to a large extent the prices of petroleum products in Zambia. Note that is Zambia buys her crude oil mostly every 3-4 months. Am reliably informed that last consignment of on which the current pricing was based was in September 2014 and by then the prices of crude on the international markets was not as low as there are now. The next consignment of crude is expected in December 2014. In my view reductions are expected. Those politicians who are talking about reducing the prices of electricity and petroleum products are lying to themselves. They lack the knowledge.

  5. This kerfuffle is surely unprecedented. Did this government REALLY know what it was in for when their party came into power? Me thinks not.

  6. In my mother tongue we could say ba makaka; education has not helped in any way or form; ERB could have explained in a very transparent way; detailing where the bottleneck has been as far as fuel pump prices are. Such details help in assuring citizens. Why hide the pricing mechanism? Pilfering, pilfers bu pompwe ba makaka.

  7. The retail price of 95-grade petrol in South Africa will drop by 69 cents or 5.2% a litre from next Wednesday, while wholesale diesel will decrease by 4.6%”‘

The reduction yes could be minimally have been a little within 2 to 5 % on an annual effective rate or a long-term moving average though ERB is within a reduction percentage basis points though the lagging in energy pricing could be something to look at in parity to the exchange rate and a trigger cap be set at which market prices if fall below that basis point can trigger a margin variation

The question is which one is higher an annual rate, a moving average, a simple mean deviation or some variance analysis over the means plus or…

  8. We dont need rocket scientists to tell us that this decrease is an insult to Zambians. The cost of driving/Travelling is very high because of fuel which is more expensive than even Zimbabwe with an ailing economy.PF think they can fool us.How does the entire minister try to dribble us that he does not understand how ERB arrived at the mockery of a reduction?LIARS LIARS LIARS LIES LIES LIES again.Really Zambians are being taken to be fools. These guys live a tax free life.Free fuel, free house, free phone and talk time plus allowances. They dont care about the citizenry.Let them continue fooling us.20/01/15,they will have us to contend with.Let others come in and try.If they fail in 18 months we shall equally show them the door.Let HH come in.

  9. Now that you know, you go and do the inevitable you clown! Are you waiting for Sata to tell you to reduce the price further? Where did he get ministers like this one from – for the life of me?

  10. @ Mulako in sharing your line of thought I would rather let the tax free life being enjoyed by our leaders undergo a review and be withdrawn as Zambia is not a very rich nation. There are more areas that need attention and withdrawal or reduction on some of the undeserved benefits from our leaders could instill sanity and promote desire to serve the nation. Any serious government would probably provide free accommodation but let leaders pay for all other services while the presidency can be the only exception to be taken care of by the state.

  11. fuel in namibia costs N$11.99/litre which converts to K7.20/litre in zambia. while our neighbours in the region have reduced the fuel prices significantly ERB reduced by 25 ngwee..$70/barrel is the amount fuel costed in 2008.

  12. This 25 Ngwee reduction by ERB is an insult to all Zambians and an insult to the entire ERB board; which had several meetings and convinced themselves that a 25 Ngwee reduction in fuel pump price was sufficient; even though they know that the cost of a barrel of fuel has gone down over 20% over the last three months and continues to fall as we speak!

Zambians are no longer the dull sheep that characterize our current crop of ministers and quasi-government board directors who fear getting fired rather than working for their bosses — the people of Zambia.
To all you dinosaurs, your time is numbered – it is time for you to go extinct!

How can ERB honestly claim to have Zambia’s interest at heart with 25 Ngwee, shuwa-shuwa fye. Reallt ERB? Really?
