UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has anchored his campaign for the Republican presidency in Northern Province on offering go put in writing a pledge to ensure the Paramount Chief Chitimukulu is gazetted.
He was speaking in Kasama on Wednesday night during a radio programme on Radio Mano community radio station after a closed door meeting with the Chitimukulu designate Henry Sosala in Mungwi.
Mr Hichilema visited the Chitimukulu’s residence were he met with Mr Sosala in a one on one meeting. The issues discussed between the duo were not made public as no one else was allowed into the meeting room.
Mr Hichilema touched on a number of issues ranging from the Barotse Agreement of 1964 to tribalism.
“I believe in unitary state which is Zambia. There are issues in the Barotse agreement that can be dealt with minus cessation,” he said.
He also said tribes had become diluted because of intermarriages to a level where some had ties with two or more tribes.
“My wife is not Tonga. She is from Central Province. I love my children. They are mixture of Tonga, Lamba and Sala. The issue of voting on tribal lines is a dead,” he said.
Mr Hichilema who conducted the interview in English with a smattering of Bemba of being thrown in, charmed some listeners when he promised to turn the country’s economic outlook.
He was accompanied by his vice president Canicius Banda who threw in a good measure of Bemba proverbs to charm the electorate in what in predominantly the ruling Patriotic Front’s main strongholds.
C’mon Mr President, we can do this!

HH’s various promises appear untenable due to the current size of the economy.For example,HH is promising free education from grade 1 to University.If we look at available education statistics of 2007 compiled by USAID the following is the position ( Kwacha estimates are mine ):-
a) Number of schools ( Grade 1 to 12 ) = 7,368
to maintain these at K20,000 per year =K61 bn
b) Number of pupils in these schools =3,034,956
cost of school uniforms @ K80.00 a pair =K0.3bn
cost of stationery and books @K160.00 per yr=K0.5bn
c) Number of Teachers =53,245
average salary per teacher @K42,00 per year=K2.3bn
Total funding required for above is K64.10 billion.
The total Zambian budget for 2015 is K46.7 billion…
