GOVERNMENT is conducting feasibility studies for the construction of a university in Eastern Province.

Education Minister John Phiri has said feasibility studies are expected to be carried out this year for the construction of a public university which will be the first in the province.

Dr Phiri said when he featured on a political hour programme on Breeze FM in Chipata that the Government had already allocated funds in the national budget for the feasibility studies for the exercise.

He explained that it was the duty of the Government to build universities in all the provinces in line with the Patriotic Front (PF) manifesto.

“Funds have already been allocated in the national budget for the feasibility studies of a university in Eastern Province. The PF Government wants to build public universities in all the provinces of the country in line with the PF manifesto,” he said.

Dr Phiri said the Government would also conduct feasibility studies in Southern, North-Western and Northern provinces.
The available universities in Lusaka and Copperbelt are inadequate to answer to the challenges and the needs of the ever growing students population especially after the construction of secondary schools countrywide.

The Education minister added that early childhood education was increasing after its introduction by the PF Government coupled with the revision of school curriculum and that university places will become scarce.

Government was aware that it had a backlog of outstanding arrears owed to teachers in his ministry.

Dr Phiri was aware that the Government had made some mistakes in the eduaction sector as well as other sectors such agriculture which would be rectified once voted into office in the January 20th 2015 presidential elections.

He warned political opponents not take advantage of the PF mistakes because the ruling party had also scored a lot of successes.

Dr Phiri said the PF Government stood ready to resolve all the mistakes it had made in the last three years for the sake of the people of Zambia.

    I thank you

    • @Acacia, what is wrong with being kalubale?

Careful what you think. You will end up with a luvale in your family and there’s nothing wrong with luvales.

      Hope you never cry racism!

    • Phiri said, “Government had made some mistakes in the education sector as well as other sectors such agriculture which would be rectified once voted into office in the January 20th 2015 presidential elections”.

What a dumb statement! I guess the people he was speaking to were just laughing at him.

    • By what standard is HH young? He is championing retirement age of 55 and he wants to stand for Presidency at the age of 53? He has no experience in government, not even at a ward level. Does he want to learn on the job for 2 years and then retire? Waste of national resources. Does he have any brain and concern for Zambians?

  2. Not from you again! Sorry Doc, it’s too late for promises. I thought you are in the driving seat? We want results NOT promises again. Your own lies have caught up with you!

    • @Lisa,have you read the whole article or you just read the headline and rushed to comment? The money for the feasibility study was allocated in the budget which was drafted when Sata who hails from Muchinga province was president. Dr Phiri said the Government would also conduct feasibility studies in Southern, North-Western and Northern provinces. The government is about to start constructing King Lewanika University in Western province, can you honestly accuse them of regionalism? Vote Pabwato

  3. Mr phiri, feasibility study now, where were u PF until election time, mwailasha. U even don’t mention Western province and yet your late president cheated us like PF always does. Suggestion shift 1 university from muchinga to northern and also transport 1 from chalimbana.u can’t bunch 4 universities in 2 towns. All de same we have moved on with a leader 200 better than all PF ministers combined

    • So how many universities do you WANT (not even NEED) in Western province with such a small population? By the way, you said people from Western, Southern, North Western, etc can not attend schools/colleges/universities in Northern/Muchinga, Lusaka/Chalimbana, Eastern, Central/Mulungushi/Nkuruma, Southern/Livingstone, C/Belt, etc.?

The universities being built or in the pipeline are National assets regardless of where they are situated. If you decide not to attend, send your children, or grandchildren to any of these schools, that will be your loss and no one will ever lose their sleep or shed a tear over it!

    • Sorry, wanted to say “…who said…” and NOT “…you said…”! I can’t accuse you something you surely didn’t say @justin moola.

    • The budget had to be approved. I am sure you know that the budget was prepared (not approved) before our beloved president Sata died so you can not say it is being done now iwe.

  4. Just next month we shall be calling majority of these kaponya ministers, former minister. Sata gave u EL but God has given us HH.now farmers are being paid at gunpoint, viva HH. RIP Paya Farmer never to see your demon again

  5. John Phiri, u shud have said that when sata was here. You instead allowed 2 universities in a small place like chinsali to be built leaving out Chipata, kasama, Solwezi, livingstone etc. Where will u get the money since yo impotent govt is broke? Maybe the chinese as usual but even them are fatigued now.

    • You are demanding universities in Chipata, kasama, Solwezi, and livingstone and yet at the same time you say govt is broke. Aren’t you contradicting yourself. Don’t you think being broke is a very good reason not to OVERSTRETCH the budget further hence the reason why these other places have to wait their turn?

By the way, one of the colleges in Livingstone is being converted into a university, just like Kwame Nkuruma in Kabwe. I can’t remember if it is Livingstone Teachers Training College or Livingstone Tech College, but one of the two. So get your facts straight!

  6. Its true that while others are promising, PF is busy delivering. Anyway let’s allow the opposition to yap for now upto 20th but thereafter it will be a sorry story for them as their yapping would be in vain. Voting for is not a secret for all I can see with reasonableness is One Edgar C. Lungu

  7. NOW MINES IN THE COPPERBELT ARE NOW IN HANDS OF FOREIGNERS BECAUSE OF THE EURO BOND. LET THEM TELL YOU THE CONDITIONS OF THE EURO BOND. WE HAVE SOLD OUR COPPER TO THE DEVILS

  8. Pf is just a hardcore tribal and regional party. Because its candidate comes from the east and construction of anything will start with the east if at all he wins.

  9. Lies, lies and lie upon lie! Pressure is on for retention of office and trying to win votes in the mentioned provinces where PF is currently seemingly weak! In Dr Phiri’s revelation there is no truth, had he refered to implementing earlier plans by the UNIP government for building universities in these areas I’d have had another view as UNIP already carried out the feasibility studies. I don’t blame PF for trying anything possible to remain in office and avoid the embarrassment of being kicked out after serving less a term! Thanks @ Lisa, let a new generation of leaders come on board.

  10. @ Acacia please stop behaving like a miserable worm. You are trying to incite tribalism with your cheap comments. Tribalism does not appeal to Zambians anymore because most have intermarried and are happy to be called whatever tribe. Loyalty to one’s tribe or culture is now a thing of the past as the new generation would like to identify themselves as Zambians by tribe.

  11. Which University will you build you bunkums when you can’t even pay farmers?
Don’t insult Zambians like that. Who will eat a university? And that university will be poorly built using corrupt Chinese, and the university will have no lecturers because no lecturer wants to work for government right now. Right now you failing to even maintain the 2 universities that are there…how will you maintain all these new white elephants you are pledging – you dunderheads!!
If you don’t us to insult you, stop issuing s.t.u.p.i.d statements as if we are your i.d.i.o.t.s whom you come to lie to every day when you get a hard on. It’s time for change and it is HH.

  12. Dr. John Phiri buying into PF deception.
Late PF Sata never planned to build anything in Eastern province, let alone university. Today he is no more and out of shame claim PF will build a university in Eastern province. Zambians know Sata wanted 3 universities built in Northern province, 1 in Western province and Luapula. PF government is/was discriminatory even MMD under RB was inclusive than PF regime.
Zambians have decided to change and are voting out PF.

  13. “IFINTU NI LUNGU”!we as PF are majority in Zambia today,so all of us must go and vote for Edgar Lungu on 20/01/2015 !LETS DEFEAT NOISE MAKERS OR CRY BABIE UPND CLEARLY TO RETIRE THEIR TRIBAL HH!CONTINUE WITH DEVELOPMENT PF AND WE AS ZAMBIANS HAVE NO DOUBTS IN YOU BCOZ WE’VE SEEN WITH OUR NAKED EYES MASSIVE PROJECTS WHICH YOU’RE IMPLEMENTING!VIVA PF VIVA EDGAR LUNGU!

  14. Promising development for votes is cheap politics. Zambians deserve better. Each province deserve a fair share of the Zambian wealth. Instead of empty promises, please expand the University of Zambia to specialise in key economic sectors dotted around in all our provinces.

  15. Phiri said, “Government had made some mistakes in the education sector as well as other sectors such agriculture which would be rectified once voted into office in the January 20th 2015 presidential elections”.

What a dumb statement! I guess the people he was speaking to were just laughing at him.

  16. Looking at the number of universities being built. Do we have the capacity to keep them afloat? Do we have qualified manpower to teach in these universities? If the idea is to build a university in each province, why has Lusaka received another University (Chalimbana) when it already has UNZA? Why not build it some 500km from Lusaka e.g Chipata. I also see no reason why we should have two universities (ROBERT KAPASA MAKASA UNIVERSITY and PAUL MUSHINDO) within same radius of Muchinga. I have nothing against Muchinga Province but I’d have loved one of these to be built in Kasama or Mansa. I hope we won’t have a scenario where diploma and bachelors degree holders being employed to teach in these universities.

  17. I think we need trade schools more than universities. For our population we need schools to teach how to manufacture stuff
