All former Mongu Mayors have with immediate effect endorsed the candidature of the United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema for next week’s Presidential Election.
The former Mayors who include Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD)’s Charles Akende say their decision is purely based on the vision of Mr. Hichilema in the agriculture sector among others.
They contended that the UPND leader is the only one among the eleven candidates who has a clear vision which will empower local authorities countrywide through a vigorous decentralization policy.
In a statement by Western Province Association of Former Mayors signed by the chairperson Shalala Simushi and copied to the UPND Western Province Campaign Center, the mayors said they were delighted with Mr. Hakainde‘s road map on the constitution.
“What else would someone demand for? HH has signed a social contract with the consortium of NGOs to commit himself that under his government a new constitution shall be delivered before the 2016 general elections. He has also released the road map to that effect,” read the statement.
They have since urged Zambians to go out in numbers to vote for Hakainde in next week’s Presidential Election saying it is only a high turnout of voters that can help prevent the Patriotic Front (PF) from rigging the elections.
The most notable among the former Mayors are MMD’s Ms. Jalla Mumbwe, PF’s Boyd Muka, MMD’s Shalala Simushi, Mr. Lubinda Nkwilimba and Mr. Sishwashwa Mbinji.
Meanwhile, a Zambian senior Economist Dr. Muilola Imakando says he has temporarily closed all his companies just to ensure that he campaigns for UPND’s Hakainde so that he becomes victorious next week.
Addressing Mongu civil servants and youths over the weekend in Mongu, Dr. Imakando said it would be folly for anyone to vote for a drunkard without a vision and no traceable leadership record.
And Liuwa MP Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwani said he has decided to support UPND’s Hakainde because Zambia has been miss-governed under the PF and that the PF came to power through lies hence the need to be kick them out of power.

Not sure that this endorsement adds or takes away from HH’s chances in Western Province. He has generally performed well there in the past. I don’t see how it would be any different this time around. In short, its a traditional stronghold for UPND either way and votes are expected to be in his favor. Copperbelt, Lusaka and Central Provinces are the ones to look out for.
HH has never gotten first place in Western Province. He was beaten by Mwanawasa in 2006, then by Banda in 2008 and 2011. 2015 will be the first time he carries Western Province. You can include North Western Province also were he always came second. I think people have the history, wrong data and conclusions.
