Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) Executive Director, MacDonald Chipenzi, has welcomed the appointment of Justice Ireen Mambilima by President Edgar Lungu as Chief Justice.
Mr Chipenzi said Justice Mambilima deserves the position, describing her as a woman of courage, fairness and experience.
“It is a good move by President Lungu. Justice Mambilima is a noble woman of this nation. She has vast experience in the Judiciary, she has been presiding officer in a number of general elections, she is courageous and handles every case the way it is,” he said.
The FODEP director told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Ndola today that Justice Mambilima is expected to bring competence in the Judiciary especially at Supreme level.
He, however, said Justice Mambilima should have waited for the electoral dust to settle as her appointment is going to reinforce sentiments of allegations from political parties that feel the January 20, 2015 Presidential election results were manipulated.
“As FODEP, we would have loved to see Madam Mambilima presiding on the 2016 general elections as well.
“The appointment is very quick. Imagine before even the 14 days given to anyone to take their case to court, the President has already appointed the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia as Chief Justice. Who is going to be the witness?” he wondered.
Mr Chipenzi added that he is confident Justice Mambilima will perform according to the Zambian law.
