Hector Chilombo insists his Zambia Under-20 team are still in the race despite coming off second best to Mali on Monday at M’Bour.

Mali outshined Zambia to win 1-00 in the two sides opening Group B match at the 2015 African Youth Championships in Senegal on Monday night.

A superb 74th minute free kick by Alassane Diallo sent Zambia to a first day defeat at the tournament.

“We lost but we are not out. I’m happy for my boys, because they have shown that they can improve,” Chilombo said.

“We will remain focus and work harder in the next game. We have to recover and win our next game against Ghana. The tournament is on and we will fight on.”

However, Ghana lead Group B after shocking ten-man South Africa 2-0 in the early kick off at the same venue.

Zambia are third behind Mali on zero points ahead of their penultimate Group B match on March 12 against Ghana.

  1. Chilombo should not cheat himself that he can beat Ghana, I have seen all group games and Zambia is the least in technical terms of the game.
They lack purpose, physic and accurate passing, they merely kick the ball without creating good chances of scoring. In fact the game against Mali was Zambia’s which they could have won in the 1st half.
Having seen Janza’s and Chilombo’s teams I could say we don’t have suitable local coach for the job, this is a fact.

    • Point taken, what i saw last night was truly horrific and saddening. The boys were running around like headless chickens. I cant believe that Chilombo, Janza or Kaunda deserve to coach Zambia at any level. Where’s the Mexican tactician/TV analyst by the way? If the boys can upset Ghana i will jump in the air! But that wont be because of Chilombo’s tactical brilliance! It will be down to the boys to die a little for Mother Zambia.

  3. Just bring back Goerge Lwandamina and Wedson Nyirenda. Look at Zesco performance. Co-opt The Power Dynamos coach as well. Try picking coaches based on the performance of their clubs.
We are tired of excuses. Get players from other division one teams as well.they have the charater not those wasteful boys we are watching…some of those are just lucky to be in Lusaka and then find themselves playing for Zanaco, GBFC etc…they are under-20s at Blackpool as well…

  4. U20 should just comeback.U17 started with same scoreline. We are not prepared for these tournaments. We just fulfill the fixtures. Why do we always cheat our selves……….we shall improve on the next game. There are only three games, you lose one then that’s it.First game is important.Win or draw to have the advantage.

  5. Same story again, this same coach when his boys lost one nil to Senegal in a friendly he said something like ‘am happy with this result because it has given me the areas I need to improve my team when the tournament kicks off’. Now today he is telling us the same old story

  6. …This coach also. So, where do these guys from Europe beat us in terms of coaching?

A non entity in the name of Bonneti qualified the team also to Africa Cup.

Renard, from nowhere he shined. Took Zambia to the Quarter Finals after some years in Angola 2010.

    2012 he bagged it.

Now, our coaches really leave much to be desired despite speaking the same language with the players, staying with them, watching them every weekend at their clubs, still more …..awe mwandi

  7. We don’t have a team period! This boy thinks he can beat Ghana! Why not tell the people the truth that you are not capable instead of exciting people for nothing! This Chilombo is a very useless coach. From the games I have seen so far, Zambia is the weakest in terms of technique, physic and they don’t seem to know what to do with ball. From the games played so far, statistically the Zambian team has made more mistakes than any other team. You can’t compare this team to the teams of 1999 and 2007 by far! If this is the team for the future then we better stick to the Katongo’s and the Mayuka’s!

  9. The boys lacked stamina and were easily shoved off the ball. Chances were created but not converted. After Lubambo injury, there was poor cohesion and it turned into a mere “tamanga” game.
