Shepolopolo beat Zimbabwe in Olympics qualifiers

Share

Shepolopolo have narrowly trounced Zimbabwe 2-1 in their opening 2016 Rio Olympic Games qualifier played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday.

This game was delayed for close to 30 minutes after Zimbabwe questioned the gender of Zambia forward Barbara Banda.

Zimbabwe claimed that Banda was a boy before officials resolved the matter and allowed her to feature in this first leg, second round match of the Olympics qualifiers.

When the game started Zambia quickly brushed aside the pre-match controversy to take a 2-0 lead into the half time break thanks to quick goals from Hellen Mubanga and Banda.

It was a tightly contested game as earlier predicted by Zambia coach Albert Kachinga.

However, Zimbabwe ensured that they remained in contention to advance when they grabbed an away goal late in the second half.

Rude Neshamba registered the goal for the Mighty Warriors led by charismatic trainer Rosemary Magadza.

The two teams meets in the return leg scheduled for Harare next week.

Meanwhile, there will be two more rounds before Africa’s envoys in womens football at next year’s Olympics are decided.
