Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Yamfwa Mukanga has disclosed that Zambia Railways was scouting for US$8 million to revamp infrastructure and ensure smooth operations of the railway sector in the country.

Mr. Mukanga told journalists in Livingstone that the railway company had informed government that it needed an additional US$8 million to revamp operations.

He said there will soon be a financial injection in the railway sector following discussion which the company and government have been having with some financiers.

“When we had the first discussion with Zambia Railways, they said they needed another 8 million dollars in order for everything to be revamped,” he said.

Mr. Mukanga said government was looking at projects which will contribute to the quick improvement of the sector.

He said Zambians will soon see some positive changes in the sector because the railway company recently procured some machinery using the Eurobond.
He said the company bought two big units tamping machines which are used to straighten the railway line.
The minister said the straightening of the railway line will contribute to increasing the speed of trains thereby improving operations and quickening the transportation of goods.

And Mr. Mukanga has disclosed that former Zambia Railways Chief Executive Officer Muyenga Atanga did not voluntarily resign from his position but was fired by the board.

He stated that Professor Atanga was fired on May 29th 2015 by the board but he decided to write a letter on 31st May stating that he had resigned.

The minister explained that the board had indicated that it was not satisfied with Prof. Atanga’s performance and that there were suspected financial irregularities involved in his leadership.

Mr. Mukanga said no railway project will be affected by the departure of Prof. Atanga noting that the board will soon find a replacement.

Two days ago, Prof. Atanga announced his resignation as Managing Director of Zambia Railways partly stating he was not working well with the board.

    • So what are these financial irregularities that Atanga has committed? And why is he not prosecuted? Remember that Chirwa was prosecuted over rent money and a recommendation of his company which he did not get any money for. So in all fareness, if Atanga misappropriated some money, let the minister come out to say what was stolen and when they will press charges.

    • Now I know that Mukanga is a complete ideeot! Just a couple of years ago over $200m from the eurobonds was pumped into ZRL. Anybody who knew anything about transportation said at the time that was not enough because billions of dollars were required. Now Mukanga claims just $8m will sort out the operations? Isn’t that just the cost of one train (Loco and carriages)? As long as such PFools are allowed to run public institutions, Zambia will never develop!

  1. These guys are criminals. They have already finished the 120 million dollars and now want more? May God hear us!

  2. No where in the world does the public sector directly run operational services such as railway to internationally high standards.. Private sector has to come into play otherwise it’s a bottomless pit!

You’ll keep firing CEOs but mediocrity in leadership coupled with endless extravagance shall be the order of the day

    • @ Umuntu Mutwe,
The public sector in China runs a very profitable railway system. The chinese railway system is one of the most advanced in Asia and possibly in the world. Their fleet consists maglev, bullet trains, etc……

So basically the Zambian govt can also run the railway sector in our country. What has been missing previously was the political will by the govt to invest in this sector and afterwards run in profitably.

For your information, the following companies are profitably run by govt agencies; Levi park, National Airports cooperation, Hostels board of Zambia, Mulungushi conf Centre, etc.

    • @Seasoned Engineer

Sorry to say but you seem not to be well informed of how the Chinese industry operates. Financing is exclusively from public sector to clusters of privately owned businesses in communities. Chinese government closely regulates what profits these clusters make which means suppliers are clearly told at what price they can sell their goods and services. Now if that is the kind of business framework you want GRZ to adopt, I don’t know how many steps backwards we need to tak .

  3. He came, he ate, he went and now you are looking to scrounge for left overs. Something is seriously wrong with this country called Zambia. This is how a country ends up with big debts because the funds disappear in thin air. The CEO was a fraudster from the begging but as usual Zambians got dazzled by his fake qualifications. Probe the bugger and recover the stolen money first before you galavant for more.

  4. Muna siliza kusheta yonse mahaf ya Eurobond??
    Ba kawalala chabe’
    A Nation of Mambala’s!!

  5. We told you that Atanga was not fit for that position but no one listened…now $120m later you want another cheque without accounting for that figure…if they were financial irregularities under the previous CEO why is ACC not moving in?

    • I have been waiting for your comment on this one Jayjay. When it is Kalu ( Galu as you call him ), you have the best statements of all lol. Also on Monetary malpractice. They need to arrest people involved with the Eurobond.

  6. I’m so amazed, these crooks, pimps, spivs, & pirates, have even been banging their greedy chests, suggesting “Lets start a National Airline”
I shudder to imagine how this enterprise will only be used by Cadres, Politicians, Wives, & Girlfriends to bleed Zambia Dry, fatten their Bellies & Offshore accounts, whilst the average Zambian gets emaciated to death from grinding poverty.
WE AFRICANS WILL NEVER DEVELOP, BECAUSE OUR POPULATION IS GULLIBLE & IGNORANT

    • @Lekeni Sata Atushe: you are so right. We have a problem in Africa of voting for and letting visionless demagogues run the economies into the ground. These useless politicians are in it for themselves only, not for public service, and the gullible voter stands by as the crooks get fat.

  7. Bring back Chirwa. He is a man of vision, expertise and experience.

Forget about all these theorists who have nothing to vouch for them in the transport industry.

  8. Stop talking nonsense! Why won’t you let Atanga tell the nation what he did with the money we gave him before you start asking for more money based on pure guesswork?

  9. I m saying it again, Zambia is going nowhere. Only the white man can correct things not these orangutans u call leaders. A good number of them have black brains like their skin.

    • We had your so called whites that were running ZRL for many years and they literally stripped the company of the little that was left by Kaunda. And now an animal like you can come and talk such rubbish? I criticize the current managers because I know they can do better but will never think of them as sub human! If you are a sub human being and believe so, please find a rock to crawl under and leave us alone! These people with all their faults are better than the whites you worship you embacile!

  10. This Chama is very useless just like PF itself. How can you have such a dull person as a board Chairman for a company? Has he got any idea of corporate governance? Zambians if you’re still thinking and hoping the economy will improve with the current leadership you better wake up from the slumber because 2016 is too far. These guys will loot everything and just leave a monument of loans. How can Mukanga supervise his boss? Board Chairman reports to the minister and this minister is junior in party position to the board chairman who is also a minister in the same government. Where on earth? These chaps are not serious but just there to see how much money is coming into the firm and then steal.

  11. THE FRENCH WHO CAME LOOKING FOR INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES ARE THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO PARTNER WITH THE GOVERNMENT FOR PPP IN PUBLIC COMMUTER TRAINS, TRAMS AND BUSES FOR OUR CITIES AS WELL AS INTER-CITY AND TOWNS TRAINS. THE FRENCH HAVE AN EXCELLENT HIGHLY AFFORDABLE PUBLIC TRANSPORT. INDIGENOUS ZAMBIANS CAN ABLY HANDLE INTER-CITY AND TOWNS LONG DISTANCE PEOPLE TRANSPORTATION. HOWEVER, THE FRENCH CAN ORGANISE INTER-CITY BUS TERMINALS/STATIONS AND AIRPORTS. MOREOVER, THE FRENCH CAN PARTNER WITH THE GOVERNMENT TO RE-ESTABLISH ZAMBIA AIRWAYS. THE FRENCH CAN ALSO PARTNER WITH GOVERNMENT TO ESTABLISH CARGO AND HUMAN LAKE TRANSPORT SYSTEMS ON ALL OUR LAKES. THE FRENCH ARE EXTREMELY GOOD IN THESE AREAS INCLUDING POLICE AND MILITARY.

  12. Bo #Umuntu Mutwe, are you from planet earth or you’ve been in Diaspora too long that you don’t know that ZRL went into private hands & the company was stripped off its assets and basically collapsed? The limping ZRL today is at least 10 times better than when it was in private hands. i trust ba #Seasoned Engineer has answered you well.
Back to ZRL, let Lungu bring back prof Chirwa

  13. 8 Million to revamp. Next 10 Million to start running and 5 Million for operations cost, 6 Million for maintenance.
