The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority has expressed concern over the rising cases of people conducting abortions at illegal clinics in Lusaka.
ZAMRA Senior Pharmaceutical Inspector Kelvin Mujelemani said in an interview that the Authority has discovered that illegal circumcision operations are being conducted at unregistered clinics in most compounds in Lusaka.
Mr Mujelemani explained that some young boys have had their private parts amputated after these illegal circumcisions have gone wrong.
“What we have discovered is that male circumcisions have become very popular due to the massive advertisements about its benefits and some unscrupulous people are now cashing in by performing these operations in their illegal drug stores,” Mr Mujelemani.
He added, “The illegal drug store owners are conniving with Pharmacists from Government hospitals and are stealing a controlled drug called Lignocaine or Lidocaine used as local anaesthetics stop pain and they are selling to these backyard drug stores to use after operations.”
Mr Mujelemani said men and boys rushing to these illegal drug stores to seek these operations are risking their lives.
He said the Authority has since intensified its inspections to close down these illegal drug stores and sensitise the public on the dangers of conducting illegal circumcisions.

This is the legacy of Dr Francis Manda, lying that circumcision prevents AIDS. Superstitious Zambians will believe anything, including that powercuts are caused by God. Circumcision does not stop HIV and Aids. If you have doubts, just ask people from Northwestern Province. Don’t they die from Aids? Circumcision comes with cultural beliefs about sexuality that are more important than being cut and continuing to live recklessly. Shunu is no cure; shunu is not cool.

It is surprising that the western countries have targeted female circumcision practised by Africans but are completely happy with male genital mutilation because Jewish traditions dominate European culture. Under any other circumstance this would be considered child molestation and should the Rabbi survive the brutal assault by the parents that should rightly follow such an atrocity committed on their child, the Rabbi would be chucked in jail, how do parents allow this to continue?

it is about illegal circumcission centres, but most of the bloggers here are condemning the whole thing of circumcission which would not have given rise to these illegal centres. So they are rightly fixing the problem by taking or attacking the root of this problem.
This country, never cease to surprise me! Mr. Mujelemani isn’t alarmed by backyard circumcisions. These are illegal. Arrest the people who carry these out and deal with those who are stealing the anesthesia. This is a trend in Zambia, complaints but no solutions to problems that are identified. This mindset needs to change. Intensify inspections. There are no checks and balances in instititutions or we are never consistent in our checks.
Another thing. Is ZAMRA responsible for regulating drug usage? If it is it has failed to do so. How do the workers steal and sell a controlled drug without the relevant authorities not doing anything. Much as I am loathe to say this, these are signs of a failed state where people’s morals are deeply compromised!
God created me to enjoy sex. Any human efforts to try to reduce that enjoyment on me and my children is a waste of time. I would rather teach my boys cleanness and let them enjoy their marriages.
When you reach 45 and about, it’s already a challenge to do three rounds a night or once every day for seven day, how much more when I cut?
