President Edgar Lungu has told Barrick Gold Corporation, the parent company of Lumwana Mine, that the company operations in Zambia will not be affected by power shortages in the long term because Government is working hard to have enough power.

Speaking when he held talks with Barrick Gold Corporation president Kelvin Dushnisky, Mr Lungu said effects of climate change have “taught Government a lesson not to entirely depend on hydro -power”.

He told Mr Dushnisky that although it was his prayer that the next rainy season would resolve the problem, Government has a strategy of getting power from other sources.

“So, we are not just sitting back waiting for God to give us rain. We are doing whatever we can within our means to ensure that there is enough power, rain or no rain,” Mr Lungu said.

He noted that Zambia is not the only country facing challenges of power in the region.

South Africa, one of Africa’s biggest economies, also has load shedding.

Mr Lungu said some countries have survived on other sources of energy and, as such, there is nothing that would stop Zambia from using a similar strategy.

The President said the mining industry has not been at its best because of the plummeting price of copper.

Mr Dushinisky, who was accompanied by consultant Mike Regan, said Lumwana appreciates the partnership with Government since Mr Lungu assumed office.

He said the company is happy with the spirit of dialogue and transparency.

He sympathised with the President over the power deficit and pledged that Lumwana would work with maximum efficiency with the available power to maintain production.

  1. I remember one muzungu Plant Manager of a certain mine in Solwezi telling me that after working in many countries around the world it was only in Zambia where he always met and shook hands with the republican presidents each time they visited his plant site….. now the president meeting these small boys from barrick!!!!! how I wish these talks could be downgraded to either Perm Secs or ministers

  2. “Even South Africa had loashedding” comparing South Africa to Zambia doesn’t solve our problems.Even the rand is weak…. it has nothing to do with us.Find real solutions to our problems ,you ,our leaders in PF

“President Edgar Lungu has told Barrick Gold Corporation, the parent company of Lumwana Mine, that the company operations in Zambia will not be affected by power shortages in the long term because Government is working hard to have enough power.”
From the above statement it is clear that government has found the solutions BUT that such projects take time to complete.

Chatasha has a point.Just yesterday the empty block called Kennedy Kamba was boasting about PF achievements. He talked about infrastructural developments I remember him talking about 58 schools more than 30 of which are boarding schools,2030 something primary schools ,hospitals, universities, projects on going at UTH,he did not even mention other things like district offices constructed by PF.Now as they have themselves admitted all these were unplanned and unbudgeted for.If they did not plan for this infrastructure you think they planned for the additional demand on the national electricity grid. They bought machines which if you ask a Zesco engineer quietly will tell you that their consumption of water caused to consume more than our allocation of Kariba Dam water.I believe…

  4. Mailon,
Though your name is coxing, you are not adding any value to this topic. As I quote you “They bought machines which if you ask a Zesco engineer quietly will tell you that their consumption of water caused to consume more than our allocation of Kariba Dam water. I believe…” Who bought the unnamed machines? Whose consumption of water and which water are you talking about? And you continue writing that you believe…..What do you believe? If you have nothing to write about…. why not just keep quiet and listen more…see more …smell more than talking before you think.
The machines you may refer to were bought long time back in 2090s and never finished water all this long time…and you think the draught in the region has nothing to do with the level of water in the dam…

    • “…The machines you may refer to were bought long time back in 2090s and never finished water all this long time…”

Black jealous of Pink, you are living in the future?
