A combined team of Forestry Department and Zambia Police Officers in Mbala District in Northern Province on Wednesday swung into action and confiscated over 150 by 50 kilogrammes of illegally produced bags of charcoal.

Mbala District Forestry Officer Cathy Kaunda disclosed this in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services -ZANIS in Mbala. Ms Kaunda said the illegal cutting of trees at water sources and along river banks is a leading cause of environmental degradation in Mbala.

She said this has led to low water levels being experienced in the streams.Ms Kaunda has since appealed to the local traditional leadership to urge their subjects to desist from indiscriminate cutting of trees.

  1. ALL THE GOVERNMENTS OF ZAMBIA AND THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE THEMSELVES ARE NOT SERIOUS INSTITUTIONS AND PEOPLE ABOUT THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF ZAMBIA AND IT IS SICKENING WHEN YOU SEE GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS AND PEOPLE WHO JUST DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PRESERVING OUR NATURAL RESOURCES. IN ZAMBIA TREES ARE CUT DOWN FOR EXPORT TO CHINA AND CHARCOAL-MAKING. ZAMBIA HAS ABUNDANT COAL WHICH CAN BE USED IN PLACE OF CHARCOAL WHEN DICED AND PACKED IN MANAGEABLE QUANTITIES. COAL IS EVEN BY FAR BETTER THAN CHARCOAL AS IT CAN BE REUSED MANY TIMES. CHARCOAL CAN ONLY BE USED ONCE. AND WHAT ABOUT THE LADY IN SOLWEZI WHO HAS INVENTED CHARCOAL WITHOUT CUTTING A SINGLE TREE?

  2. The rich countries don’t give a rat’s ass about the environment. Sadly, poor countries think it is a good thing to emulate and are overdoing assaults on the environment on a grand scale. What is sad is that nobody thinks that most of their actions will manifest before their sorry asses retire to wherever their little hells are awaiting them. Disgusting!

  3. I’m glad I took the time to read this article because I wasn’t sure what constitutes an illegally produced bag of charcoal. I thought some clever Zambian had managed to bring Chinese cheap labor all the way from China, illegally shipping them in through the Zimbabwe border under the guise of toy stuffed animals.
