Movie review : The Revenant

Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.

  • Excellent performance by both Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy .
  • Hugh Glass’s(leonardo DiCaprio) fight with the bear thrilling ,exciting and terrifying at the same time .

  • The pacing of the movie was too slow .
  • The story-line is a bit too basic .
  • More information about Hugh Glass’s back story should have been given .

Hikuc: “My heart bleeds. But revenge is in the creator’s hands.”

Hugh Glass’ Wife: “As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You breathe. Keep breathing. When there is a storm. And you stand in front of a tree. If you look at its branches, you swear it will fall. But if you watch the trunk, you will see its stability.”

The Revenant is a very captivating and gripping movie. It is a story of a man’s immense will to live coupled by his intense lust for revenge .  Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy both had strong performances as Hugh Glass and John Fitzgerald respectively . Leonardo DiCaprio’s character did not have much dialog , but his actions spoke much loader than his words . His fight for survival against the seemingly insurmountable odds was portrayed brilliantly. Tom Hardy’s portrayal of the villainous character ,Fitzgerald, was done splendidly . He was a vile, despicable , cunning human being that you will love to hate .

The Revenant is not a film with a clear message, but instead one with many, small hints as to what the underlying implications are. It deals with themes such as racism , revenge , love , the strength of the human spirit , life and death . It has a powerful ending that will leave you with something to think about .

The Revenant has received numerous award nominations and wins, including winning three Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director and Best Actor – Drama(Leonardo DiCaprio) , as well as a nomination for Best Original Score. On January 14, 2016, the film received 12 Academy Award nominations, including the Best Picture and Best Director, as well as Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor for DiCaprio and Hardy, respectively.

3 out of 5

  1. Honestly, I think the movie is over-rated or maybe it’s just that it was over-advertised. Yes, the storyline is pretty basic.
