HH ADDRESSES MINING INDABA IN CAPE TOWN

This morning UPND President Hakainde Hichilema was a key speaker at the 2016 Mining Indaba in South Africa, where he spoke alongside the CEO of Invest Africa Rob Hersov, Chairman of Credit Suisse Securities Rick Menell and CEO of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank Roberts Orya.

The annual Mining Indaba is held in Cape Town and brings together more than 7,000 delegates from 100 nations to discuss business opportunities in the sector. Notable speakers at the event include the CEOs of large companies such as Rio Tinto, Ashanti Gold and Vedanta, financiers and various ministers from across the continent.

Mr Hichilema spoke about the great opportunity that still exists in many areas of Zambia for mining projects, and in particular projects that will bring benefit to the people in terms of jobs and stimulating local economies. He stressed that with a stable policy environment, Zambia should have been producing 1.5 million metric tons of copper today, compared to the 750,000 metric tons it currently produces.

When asked what Zambia had learnt from the recent price fluctuations Mr Hichilema suggested that for far too long Zambia has been like a microcosm of the mining industry, believing during the good years that they will last forever and not reinvesting the money in diversification, and when the bad times happen panicking and trying to impose legislation that ends up causing further harm. This is a cycle we must break out from, the UPND President stated.

He further explained that given governments and companies both face challenges in navigating the commodity price cycle it was clear that the best way forward is through conversation and not confrontation. He spoke about the importance of identifying vulnerabilities that could create additional problems in advance, such as in the energy sector. He also stated that the recent weakness in the copper price and indeed any other commodities had proved a painful reminder that quicker action is required on diversification to end over-dependence on one sector, in the case of Zambia, mining.

On the question of sustainability Mr Hichilema proposed that actors need to change their time horizons when looking at the sector. He cautioned that politicians must be careful not to get caught in the trap of politicising the sector. For investors and mining companies, Mr Hichilema said they must take serious time to understand the country’s priorities and how a project can be adapted to feed into these, for example by using local contractors and creating jobs. The benefits that can be secured beyond revenues are too often neglected, the UPND President concluded.

Mr Hichilema is set to make a further address this evening at the Graduate Business School at the University of Cape Town as part of their Distinguished Speakers Programme.

    • Very good job HH! Such an intelligent presidential candidate, one who understands what he talks about. Go HH Go UPND!

    • THIS IS SPLENDID PRESIDENT HH! GOOD EXPOSURE ONCE AGAIN ON THE INTERNATIONAL PLATFORM. NOW ZAMBIA CAN ONCE AGAIN REGAIN ITS RESPECT BY HAVING A STATE PRESIDENT WITH BRAINS, JUST LIKE THE LATE MWANAWASA. VIVA HH VIVA! VIVA UPND VIVA! ZAMBIA FORWARD.

    • Minister of mines yaluma is among the. 7000 plus delegates, am sure he has learnt one or two things, especially from the incoming president.

    • Ba Chagwa could have cancelled at last minute ati I am attending to more serious national issues. We seriously need to ‘chuck out’ the PF this August bane.

    • Like said earlier guys this was the main agenda fro HH. Its from such fora that HH raises millions of dollars some of which he donates to his party.

Such fora pay for HH ‘s trips comprehensively. Unlike Lungu who dips his hand into the national coffers at the expense of our higher education. For PF globe-trotting is but just a money spinning venture to rob the people of Zambia of their hard earned tax revenue.

This French trip alone cost the government over K20 million . Thats over £1.2million. For what really at the time Zambia is in a predicament financially.

    • The Frech business community in France would like an audience with the Zambian in coming President HH. Just a rumour for now but 9/10 its true. So don’t be surprised when HH travels to France shortly.

VIVA UPND and THE HH TEAM.

    • Whoever reported this, seriously not a single direct quotation from HH!!! Sounds like HH did pretty well, but lets see the actual words that he said before we praise or judge him.

    • THOSE WRITTEN ANSWERS FOR HIM! ATI HE IS WISE. WHO DOESNT KNOW THOSE ANSWERS FROM TIME IN MEMORIAL?? HOW MANY RESEARCH PAPERS BEEN DONE BY UNZA AND CBU UNDER GRADUATES ABOUT THOSE QUESTIONS?? WE KNOW THE ANSWER, THE PROBLEM IS CORRUPTION WHICH HH IS ONE OF THE CULPRITS WHO SWINDLED THE COUNTRY. AS A GOVT, IT LOOKS BEYOND THOSE ANSWERS BECAUSE OF csr.

    • We have a sitting govt with a Edgar as president and yet the biggest mining firms chose to listen to HH and relegate Edgar’s ministers and Ambassador to the audience. Keep it up HH our only hope..

  1. Honesty is the best policy. Lungu in France & HH in South Africa, who’s being honest when it comes to attracting investors?

    • @Spark Jarrow – I would say the guy who gave a speech in SA. All these investors are already in South Africa and ready to relocate to Zambia because of bad leadership in SA.

  2. its good that both are attracting investments to our country. i salute that. the only thing is one is using public resources but hey he is entitled to it. but what is Mumbi Phiri doing in paris sure?

  3. we need big brain like the UPND president.this man is sharp in thinking.i didnt know that we may have people of such caliber.iam realy humbled and he has inspired me .It is not too let fo me to follow in his foot steps I will work hard .Go my presindent

    • Which big brain are you talking about? Just because your brain is small, you think he’s got ‘big brains’ maybe with a clarification that big brains to take care of cattle…maybe on that one

    • @james

Is Zambian President for you ask that question? SJudge him on that when he becomes president.

      VIVA UPND and HH TEAM

    • @ james

Where are dozens of “90 day” promises? Where is People Driven Constitution? Where are 2 million jobs, 1million jobs, 500 000 jobs, where is gone democracy, where is right of assembly, what f*cking 1diotic brain you posses? La merde?

  4. HH is the only guy who can offer hope to the millions of Zambia and boost investors confidence. This guy has got brains no wonder the PF does not like engaging him on policy but on personal issues that have no relevance what so ever to the running of the country.
For goodness sake let us have a debate on policy between EL and HH and people will see just how bad our president is, hiding in the tag of humbleness, but seriously when has humbleness developed a country of put food on the table of the poor Zambians.
It a wake up call, vote wisely this time around.

    • Get them both on BBC’s hardtalk to have this debate with Steven Sacor (sp) as mediator and interviewer. The truth on who is who would be laid as plain as day.

    • Why BBC? Are you suffering from an inferiority complex? We have our own Sunday interview and our own Grevazio Zulu. Bring them both on Sunday interview!

    • BBC? Lungu is dead scared of these three letters. Even this year the man will chicken out the presidential debate big time because he has no acumen to run the country. The only reason he is president today is to protect the PF theives.

      2016 PF kuyabele.

      VOTE UPND in 2016.

  5. Comment:

HH in South Africa is speaking without policy support. It is more less like ilyashi lya pansaka. But EL is speaking with authority from Zambians. Viva PF and long live the party. Come 11th August ku winery.

    • Speaking from Policy support??? Just a few weeks ago, the “POLICY SUPPORT” told us there is no Maize and we must import. A few days later, His minister says there is plenty of Maize.

Late last year “POLICY SUPPORT” directed ZESCO to increase tarrifs. A few weeks later, the move was reversed.

Earlier on, “POLICY SUPPORT” went to CB and told us clearly that NO MINER will a job. A few days later, thousands of miners lost their JOBS.

      POLICY SUPPORT
      POLICY SUPPORT my foot.

    • @A.B

Don’t pay a blind eye even when your conscience speaks otherwise. Just give a pat on the back. we know you don’t like HH.

One day HH will speak with authority from the people of Zambia. Dream on dear………

  6. Under HH, those who have, more shall be given to them and those who don’t have, even the little shall be grabbed from them. Capitalist mentality. For me I would rather vote for Nawakwi or Lungu than give my precious vote to this selfish rich capitalist whose has such huge appertite for wealth and riches! Poor Zambians will regret if they see they meagre resources only enriching the likes of GBM, Dipak Patel, Maureen Mwanawasa, and ofcourse HH.

    • @ Mina
and under PF, the poor got destitute, corrupt prosper, SME closing down, uneducated thugs are ministers, convicted criminal become ambassadors, embezzlers are given back practicing certificates, judges are put on auction, 1meciles like you are let loose on society………

    • YOU ARE 100% RIGHT MAN. THESE UP & DOWN CHAPS ARE FULL OF BLIND PRAISE. THE MAN IS A PURE CAPITALIST THATS WHY EVEN HIS WORKERS IN THE FARMS COMPLAIN. IN AMERICA ELECTIONS, WE CAN CALL HIM A REPUBLICAN WHO DOESNT CARE ABOUT THE POOR AND THE WEAK. SURVIVE WITH YOUR MEANS.

    • @AB, Mina & lwaisa indigo

HH is in tune with how resources, economy should be managed, hence the invitation to speak at a high profile indaba to market Zambia. Lungu would have chickened out of this Indaba the same way he chickened out of the BBC interview because he has nothing to say, no clue or ideas. Please wake up! All successful countries are capitalist. Russia and China were once socialist, what are they now? Tell me!

  7. HH looks intimidated and cowed into silence as the other three seem to be discussing among themselves in a typical whites only attitude. They are not taking any notice of him. It’s as if he is no there. HH, why do you force yourself onto such fora? Come back home and be useful…ECL may just consider you for an economic advisor after you lose on 11 August.

  8. ?T I am indeed surprised you have covered this I thought it was going to be on some obscure corner. Big ups to you on being neutral and and posting with a neutral headline. Once again credit where it is due. Well done.

  9. Shifting goal posts as usual. That’s why I say we are better off continue with pf because the things hh is talking about in theory are practically being done here in Zambia. One needs to look at the answer he gives when asked about comodity prices.

    • One needs the guts to show up for international interviews and the brains to answer tough questions with wisdom WITHOUT reading from notes written by someone else. That’s what one needs

  10. So Presidential my HH! Someone only talks sh**t about students, I know whether he cannot sustain an intelligent discussion like this one, ViVa HH!

  11. It without any malice that I salute HH for representing his family and country very well.HH has distinguished himself very well in his course of life.1.He is a husband of one wife and a father of upright children as well as an elder in the SDA church.this is important to me.Despite all theses he an accomplished businessman who has successfully managed UPND for ten years even without a full time Job meaning he is a good manager of wealth. The man has grown from 297,000 voters in 2006 to more than 700,000 voters in 2015.This increase in confidency by the Zambian people and business community world wide attests his ability to govern Zambia very well.I have no doubt HH is the man for job of president in Zambia.

    • the man is just stinge…take the case of yourself u are wallowing in poverty wondering whether you will even have proper lunch…why keeping all billions in the bank or so called assets when majority of his tribesmen and women are suffering from the animal called hunger.

What an elder who does not keep the sabbath holy? He is busy attending political meetings on sabbath and yet you have guts to say he is an elder… Think before you utter anything

    • @James: You just hate HH for no apparent good reasons. Give credit where it is due. Nothing that HH said at the Mining Indaba is malicious to Zambia.
Regarding his riches, HH has Companies which employ many Zambian citizens, he sponsors children of some poor people (Not his relatives), from primary School to University. He has built some Health Clinics for people in rural areas.
Have you ever heard any rich man/ woman in this world (Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Dangote etc) distributing their hard earned money freely to anyone they meet in the street? Would you call that good financial management?
If you are a christian, what did Jesus say concerning Sabbath (Matt 12:9-12)

  12. As a youth am so inspired by HH, he is human like me but he has done so much under the same conditions in Zambia. Am humbled i promise to work hard to ensure that i light my corner. No politics about this. God bless HH, God bless Zambia.

  13. I do not need HH to come and buy food for me in my home. I just need consistence policies where I can plan. This year I was planning to get a loan and buy a tractor. But I can’t I do that. Absolutely no. Bank interests have gone up with exchange rates doubling making it impossible to plan.

It is so frustrating in this country to see people shouting Chagwa or PF in the state the country is. Sometimes I suspect it could be Chama, Mumbi or Frank hiding behind the space.

  14. “He stressed that with a stable policy environment, Zambia should have been producing 1.5 million metric tons of copper today, compared to the 750,000 metric tons it currently produces.

This is a cycle we must break out from, the UPND President stated.”
This man thought It was a UPND rally. SCkasakashonongo will never grow up

    • Why, it is not true? What has your humble, vise, anointed and convicted embezzler and his gang of thieves achieved so far? Please, FACTS and NO SLOGANS.

    • Bantusta Nyandule, did you really understand the implication in the part you just quoted? For me, this was perhaps the best from HH. What he is saying in simple terms is that when copper prices are high, Zambia as a country goes on rampage wasting these revenues from copper sales believing the good prices will last forever. These revenues can easily be used to diversify the economy. However as soon as copper prices fall, Zambia suddenly moves into panic gear and tries to implement new policies which backfire. Do you understand now sir? Where is he speaking as if he is at a rally? How far did you go in school?

    • HH thinks he has the monopoly of good policies. He just admitted that we have had good years. Good years come with good policies and good fiscal management. What unique magic will HH bring to the political table other than what is already being done? You’ve missed the train again HH…ECL is already doing what you hope to do and it will always end in HOPE for you because you’re always one step too slow.

  15. THAT IS GOOD. HH IS COMING UP VERY WELL. BY 2041 HE “MAY” BE FIT FOR PRESIDENCY. FOR NOW ITS ECL CHABE. NAFUTI, NAFUTI

  16. I think it was a better presentation than what we heard he said in London last time. He focused on the sector how it should be run rather than attacking the party in power. Those that wish to see how different his party could be with regard to the sector, could then make a comparison, analyse issues and make a judgement. Roasting another party that may not be doing what we want is an internal issue, we deal with it at home – “it is a family affair and don’t wash dirty linen in public”. But one thing HH needs to acknowledge is that mines have never wanted to pay correct or enough tax to allow govt and Zambian people gain from the sector. They are also not interested to work with govt.build the capacity of local contractors to make them internationally competitive. At home,HH should show…

  17. Bantusta Nyandule, did you really understand the implication in the part you just quoted? For me, this was perhaps the best from HH. • That is where PF cadres loses it.Instead of offering commentary on hh’s address, they resort to insults. No wonder you end up saying it is global.Let me offer you insight.I believe the cyclic impa of commodity prices on our economy has been damaging. It has again reminded us that we need to overhaul the mineral policies. We need to beef up geological Surveys and open up more minerals to mining other than copper. We need to empower small scale mining and help small scale miners access funding. The future of African mining also lies in improving technical know how and skill level of people. Most of this mining giants are already diversified. For example anglo mines a variety of minerals and manufacturers different kinds of products including pharmaceuticals. Some mining companies extract gas, oil…

  18. So what is extraordinary in this article which is worthy heaping praises on? Are we all not aware of this rhetoric? For one to travel thousand s of miles just to say what even ordinary people know is a shame. As we get closer and closer to the election date, HH will be mad and claim that he can run the entire global economy, watch this space.

    • What of the one in France? What has he said so far on an international platform that makes sense? “I will win elections, am a weak President and so I need the POA, am in support of the grade 12 clause let people go to night school blah blah blah.” Is this all that a whole President can say to the international community? Why then travel to France and Italy just to say these simple and straight forward issue? Rubbish.

    • @The Messanger don’t potray as if you very educated, yet you are just an average person with humble education.Who told that what HH was saying is common knowledge,if it was why did PF and Lungu save the money when copper was doing fine and help diversify the economy. We now suffering

  19. Who will give Ichilema lessons on governmental procedure? This guy has never held any public office in his life and the moronic simpletons think he is God almighty. All praise the draft dodger.

  20. Indaba no Indaba big screen no big screen. HH freemanson will never be a PRESIDENT FOR ZAMBIA full stop Aisha ulabeja: thousands attended that Indaba but are not ZAMBIAN voters. Infact ohly a few. Of his blind followers knew and did not even see him off, if he went by plane or chimbwe in the image of satana. You guys must be serious look closely. At his hidden satanic, evil mind. Viva ECL

    • @Ba-Suntwe take your primitive politics to the stone age caves.Who the hell told HH can not be president.People now are not interested in those Tribe.I will personally and many more will vote for Hh and he will win.

    • Some people are so very scared and frustrated with HH that they would wish he never existed. JUST ACCEPT THAT HE IS GOOD AND INTELLIGENT.

What is wrong with that discussion surely???? Give praise where it is due.

  21. HH has given a fare speech for his country on mining and diversification. His aim is to attract foreign investors, which is good. Rich Zambians like him, should consider investing in value-addition Industries without compromising quality. Quality is the problem with the local companies; they are crooks that want to reap 400% profits. Until local companies start respect their economic contribution to the nation, I wouldn’t support foreign investments to contract Zambian. But this comes with the cost of externalising forex.

  22. If the man is a good manager, with progressive ideas; how come he has failed over 3 times to win in the Zambian presidential elections where it really matters? He can’t even call a Convention for his Party. Upnd keeps on losing each time presidential elections are held. And then he cries afterwards. Real crocodile tears. Real men don’t cry. Did you see Sata cry after he lost, first time? Lungu didn’t cry when Guy Scott dribbled him. President, president….Fumeni apa! Ata se!

    • @Muana Tembo: Most Zambians vote on tribal basis than voting for a party with a sound manifestos. If HH was from Northen/Luapula/ Muchinga or Eastern provinces of Zambia, he would have been a President some time back. We will see the voting pattern in August 2016 whether people will not vote on tribal basis.

  23. @Muana tembo the answer is simple.HH has been painted blck by the Tribalists like Membe who wanted his cousin Sakwiba to win.HH was voted by more than 900 delegates from all corners of Zambia to become UPND president.Iam happy today most of those who skimmed to turnish his image like Bob sichinga have coffesed HH is no tribalist.HH like Sata will make it this year.Sata tried so many times.Nawakwi ,Miyanda have also been trying but they are not improving.Lungu just inherited like RB,so it is easy.

  24. yap.yap without thinking is pf speciality. you know deep down your hearts that your jameson is nowhere near our HH but as a zambian you continue to say rubbish about such a man whom you know can liberate this country from such poverty brought about by p f. which by the way strikes is felt even by the so called pf cadres as well. When the Zambian people give H H the mandate to rule this country we who know him believe Zambia will take back its position as an economic giant in Africa and the world to the amazement of p f crooks.
