FORUM for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi has ruled out any possibility of teaming up with the United Party for National Development (UPND) in this year’s general election.
Speaking when she featured on ‘The Assignment’ programme on Muvi TV on Sunday, Ms Nawakwi said the FDD has no intentions of forming a pact with UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, because such a partnership had collapsed in the past.
She said rumours had been surfacing that the two parties were formalising talks for an alliance and that such talk was non existent.
“UPND is notorious in a number of areas, certain party officials have been going round announcing the impending alliance with FDD, but we are not going to do that because this party has been in several alliances before and they failed,” Ms Nawakwi said.
She said the FDD could not ‘escort’ another political party to win an election, because her party enjoyed massive support from the Zambians.
Meanwhile, Ms Nawakwi has urged agricultural students to consider venturing into agro-business upon completing their studies.
She said in the face of harsh economic realities, students should not depend only on formal employment, but venture into private businesses such as agriculture, which offered good retains if well tended.
She said there was need to re-focus attention from maize to crops such as sunflower and groundnuts.
“We need to be smart and discover which other crops we can invest in. Is it millet, sunflower or groundnuts? These are some of the crops that we should give enough attention so that agriculture grows alongside maize,” she said.
Madam, please make a pact with HH as your rule of law though has extremism is needed to control HH. He cannot also sack you as people will vote for you as VP not for the president. You don’t have time to gain that popularity. but as a VP with you own mandate you will show what you are made of. Zambia is willing to take a five year risk wit anyone to better live of people. you will also be judged. please rethink
She is just playing it hard to get so that HH is fooled to believe that she deserves to be his running mate. Maybe? But I know many girls who played that game when we were 20something and today they cry out loud to have us guys they thought we were not worthy of them before.
Madam Nawakwi, personally, I think you are wise sometimes and you have brilliant policies. However, yours is a dead-end if you dont change course. In simpler language, your party aint’ goin’ nowhere! Even young Rainbow and baby Orange “Afcon” Alliance will beat you.
If HH is strong why is he looking for alliances?
If you enjoy countrywide massive support as you insiniuate, run it singlehandedly.

Nawakwi….always in gaga land. FDD enjoying huge support? Statistics madam, just check past results, less than 1%. FDD is a no game changer as far as I am concerned, and you Nawakwi should be able to see that. You need to enter into a pact, but you are right, not with HH. The boy is too selfish. Rather stand as MP in your village and let FDD support EL or Nevers for president with a clause that you shall be made a top minister in the new govt. Otherwise, just continue enjoying donor money as a nonentity opposition leader.

Over the years HH has rallied behind him the whole southern province becoming the undisputed and unopposed face of UPND managing to bolster and amalgamate the party into a closely knit and unified entity, with virtually no factions, anchored by a common background.
The voting pattern for southern province in the last elections is a deafening knell of this fact. Mmembe in his post newspaper has been brazen referring to UPND’s stronghold as a “Bantustan” in previous editorials. The question is: going into elections, will UPND manage to break this negative perception? Can UPND take steps to undo the damage and reverse this tribal tag?

Nawakwi was once duped by HH he told her she didn’t have helicopters to go around to the remote parts of Zambia….she refused. So HH spoke with his tribal cousin Hambulo. Using tribe plus a chance to stand as MP (he lost) he convinced his Edith to allow the pact…she set a condition that in the event that HH did not win the election in the next one she would get his support…well he agreed to all this that’s how Edith aka ‘Mutinta’ went along with the pact…HH was nicely hammered but did he think of a pact in the next round? Nope he ignored Edith, he refused to have a pact…but now the tables have turned he needs her but she’s is strong on her own. Her party has gone national his has remained Bantustan(courtesy of Fred)
