University of Zambia (UNZA) academic staff has not been paid their February salaries as of March 8th today.

UNZA Lecturers’ and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) General Secretary Jason Mwansa has disclosed that the University has not been funded by government.

Mr. Mwanza says in a statement that this was made clear when the union met with Higher Education Minister Michael Kaingu during the closure of the University.

He states that the Union has however met with Dr. Kaingu on the 8th of February this year to explain the all the consequences of the indefinite closure of the university.

Mr. Mwanza says issues that were discussed included government’s need to now fund UNZA 100 percent.

He says his union thus appeals to President Edgar Lungu to intervene and ensure that academic staff at the University get their February salaries immediatel

    • IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY FOR UNZA. WHEN THERE’S A CLOSURE NO SALARIES. ITS NOT PRESIDENT LUNGU, ALL HE NEEDS TO DO IS CHANGE THIS KIND OF ARRANGEMENT AT UNZA. I AM SURE HE WILL ADDRESS IT ONCE AND FOR ALL.

  1. this has now become monotonous
i think as govt., lets sort out these numerous problems our two varsities have been facing from time immemorial. after all there are problems that are insurmountable.

  2. And they want to create more universities yet they can not afford to pay staff….these people are truly incompetent!!

  3. But are you working I mean lecturing? Oh sorry, unzalaru, I thought we were talking about CBU lecturers who influenced students to riot and stone my car with my two little beloved daughters inside. I will never forgive those CBU students and their lecturers. As for UNZA, government please find money to pay them by tomorrow end of day, please.
But don’t reopen the two universities until after the elections, please please otherwise we shall have no peace before during and after elections.

    • Dull head I suppose you’ve never been to school, right!? Do you know that schools have holidays, and do you imply teachers/lecturers should not be paid when schools close? Don’t be too personal, these are national issues and not bedroom issues. You will never grow if you keep behaving like this.

  4. This UNZA has become a source of concern to the nation! If it is not students rioting it is academic staff on go slow! Are there really morals at that institution? Unza is supposed to be a source of pride to the nation but what is obtaining now is despicable to say the least! There is need to change the attitudes!

  5. WHY GET PAID WHEN U WERE NOT WORKING JUST LEAVE TAKE YOUR PROBLEMS ELSE WHERE.
    #REDUCE STUDENT ACCORDING TO CAPACITY
#SOLUTION-TURN THIS UNIVERSITY INTO A PRIVATE OWNED THEN BUILD A PUBLIC ONE OUTSIDE TOWN
    #SALE SHARES TO THE PUBLIC
NO SALARY IS PUNISHMENT FOR TAKING PART IN TAKING POLITICAL PROCTITUTION AND LOVE FOR MONEY

  6. WHATS THE PRICE OF MEALIE MEAL? HAS THE PF AND LUNGU TAKEN CARE OF LOAD SHADING? THE SPORADIC SHORTAGES OF FUEL STILL GOING ON.GBM ARRESTED FOR NO GOOD REASON EXCEPT BECAUSE HE IS IN OPPOSITION AND KAINGU TREATING UNZA AND CBU LIKE HIS OWN KANTEMBA. THIS IS CALL TO ACTION. ALL UNZA AND CBU STUDENTS THE TIME IS HERE AND THE TIME IS NOW. WE MUST USE THE BALLOT BOX AND GET RID OF LUNGU, PF AND KAINGU!!!!!

  7. Fully Support the call for salaries to be paid, but NOTE that the staff are also victims of wayward students not just general public caught up in their violence.

Negative commentators have not understood that this is a precedent set up systemically and has nothing to do with His Excellency President Lungu!

If the staff at UNZA want this to stop the university must also try harder to prevent students rioting as they suffer too.

  8. Perhaps this is slightly different because it is the government that has closed the university but even when the university workers go on strike they still expect to be paid. When nurses go on strike they still expect to be paid. This must be the only country that pays its striking workers. You find nurses going to work everyday just to sun bath in the sun if it is in June but refuse to work. In other countries the Union pays its members when they are on strike but to complicate matters even worse the strike is usually not sanctioned by the Union.

  9. Students are sorry for the violence they caused and have felt the punishment for their evil deeds such that they wont do it again. However,my main concern is on cadres from the opposition political parties who want to speak on behalf of the students. These have made it difficult for students and the Government to understand each other in manner that the Government intends to bring development in the country. Thank you Dr Kaing for the descipline instilled in the students now

  10. Don’t be cheated as a student at UNZA am not sorry and not affected in any way. Right now am in my office working. People that never went to a public University are free to issue negative comments because they don’t have an experience on what to be at UNZA or CBU means.

  11. Am petrified, stupidfied by this ish, indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.
If someone wants you in their live they will make room for you.you shouldnt have to Fight for a Spot.never Insist yourself to some who continously overlooks your worth. Lost are many great commissions by such neglect.
