UNITED Party for National Development(UPND) has suffered a setback after their mines chairperson Maxwell Mwale along with 2,500 ditched the opposition political parties and joined the ruling Patriotic Front(PF).

Apart from UPND members who defected to PF others were MMD members.

The defection of Mr Mwale who is former MMD Malambo Member of Parliament (MP) has come barely few days when UPND MP for Katuba Jonas Shakafuswa defected to the ruling party.

The former cabinet minister in MMD regime said when he officially announced his defection at Chiutika primary school in Mambwe today that he was impressed with the developmental projects which the ruling party has fostered in various parts of the country.

He said he cannot continue aligning himself with opposition political party because it had no future.

“I have found it incumbent or important that i should align myself with the party in power.The PF Government has done a lot like the Chipata-Mfuwe road and many other development projects”he said.

And receiving the defectors,PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri assured the people of Mambwe that Government would deliver relief food to starving people.

She explained that it was a shame that some traditional leaders were even following politicians in court.

She said she was happy that the traditional leadership in Eastern province showed maturity by not giving solidarity to Mr Mwale.

Ms Mumbi said the traditional leadership should not flash party symbols like what happened to the wife of Chief Mukuni of Southern Province who flashed a UPND symbol.

Speaking earlier Eastern Province chairperson Andrew Lubusha said the defectors would be incorporated into various campaign committees.

Meanwhile, UPND National Management Committee trustee, Maybin Mubanga has also defected to the Patriotic Front. Mr. Mubanga said that he has decided to join the PF because President Edgar Lungu has exhibited zeal to revive the country’s economy.

Mr. Mubanga told the media at a briefing in Lusaka today that President Lungu is a humble servant who wants to uplift the livelihood of the poor. Mr. Mubanga said there is no reason to remain in the UPND because President Lungu holds the vision similar to the founder of UPND, Anderson Mazoka. He has since appealed to Zambians to support and vote for President Lungu and the PF in the August 11 elections.

And PF Secretary General, Davies Chama said more people including senior member of the UPND want to join PF. Mr. Chama said the PF is the only party with a mission and vision to transform the country. He said the decision to join the PF is the best move which should never be regrettable.

    • It is Mr Mwale’s right to join whatever party he’s comfortable with but then we also know that he’s supposed to be in jail. So his reasoning is influenced by a lot of factors.
      Its also the right of chiefs to visit who ever welcomes them. Nobody visited Mr Mwale as his charges were for stealing while its a known fact that GBM is being persecuted.

    • Its not about HH, you should be thinking about the fate of the country. The economic crisis in which Zambia is in now, it will take 20 to 30 to fix it. HH`s is very comfortable and his children are well sorted out. Every sensible Zambian adult should worry about the future of the Zambian children.

Its even making me go dizzy just watching this circus, surely we need principled politicians, why is it that these things do not happen in the west.   6. UPND predicted massive defections from PF after Sampa left, but how come we are not seeing them defections, but continue to see top Dogs from UPND leaving. You can insult Maxwell Mwale all you want but HH and the entire UPND thought he was a big fish and that is why the gave him the position of Chairman for mines. So this is a big loss to UPND. Not event MMD is losing big fish at the rate UPND is. The other day it was Shakas. Am sure if GBM defected today you will call him names and how useless he was.     Honestly those defecting from UPND are people who think that they stand no chance of getting jobs because of the stiff competition. On the other hand PF has become a shell of itself so it is obvious PF would take them with both hand. That is politics!!!!

    • I personally know Mr. Maxwell Mwale. He is a geologist/mining engineer with a masters degree in the same field. He also has a lot of properties here in Lusaka and Eastern province. At the wedding of one of his nephews which I was privileged to attend, he paid in full all that his nephew was required to pay on the spot. And I am not talking of small change here. This guy is far from being being broke or desperate for a job! Ba UPND smell the the coffee. These are danger signs.

  8. End of the day we are where we started from before October 2011! MMD is full in PF almost taking over though with a difference that UPND has also received some former PFs and a few MMDs. We seem to be failing to create the real change that can get started in doing things differently!!

    • It is not so much the name of the party that brings about change but the vision of its leaders. UNIP was full of ex ANC members but brought about independence because the vision of its leaders was to get independence by any means necessary not the ANC which believed in “ukupokelela ichinsenda ku nkoko kunakilila” MMD was full of ex UNIP members but the vision of its leaders was to do away with socialism. PF was full of MMD members but got into government because of Sata’s vision. Donald Trump is causing ripples in the Republican party because of his vision or lack of it. The UPND of HH is not the same as the UPND of Mazoka who to this day some people believe he was robbed of the presidency. Mandela, Gandhi, Idi Amin, Hitler, Churchill, its all about leaders.

  17. Maxwell Mwale was Mines Minister in MMD government. UPND was already fully fleged with a shadow cabinet inluding a mines chairperson. How did Mwale become UPND Mines chair person?
    Mwale issued mining licences for cash and received thousands of bicycles to which he was prosecuted for under corruption charges. His attempt to associate himself with UPND was to escape corruption tag he continues to wear todate. Mwale’s fake defection announced underpins his corrupt character, who can trust him.

    • He is also a corruption convict. UPND is a party of principles, maxwell was not going to be adopted as a matter of principle. Same as RB and dora, UPND refused to talk to them. The only place corrupt pipo can go is to PF. It is after all a party of looters, fraudsters, swindlers, Smagglers and down out right theives.

  27. UPND is rapidly going into self- immolation. No one has attacked UPND or is there any enemy that has managed to surround and overcome the party. Not even God’s judgement is in effect here. Zambians from the north and east can vividly remember the persecution that was thrust on those not aligned to Mwanawasa between 2001 and 2008. The cartel that planned that persecution of tribes from north and east has offered HH help provided he allows persecution if he wins. Make no mistake voters, persecution and tribalism will be on the ballot paper on 11/8/2016. Together lets stop the persecution agenda.

  41. Mr MMB Mwale is a brilliant mining engineer. We did our MSc(Eng) together at Imperial College in London. When he was minister of mines, he had Dr Beene as his PS. They were a formidable team. His defection could be the turning point in this election. PF is heading for victory as a result.

Mr Mwale is my brother and he told us that he will join Pf so that he case can be finished. am UPND , Mwale came to tell us to him come with him in PF so that Pf can see that Mwale he has a lot of supporters and they have arranged with RB that once he joins Pf , he court cases will be ruled out.
