President Lungu has said the respect for human rights and the promotion of good governance and democracy help in providing a conducive environment for everyone to live in decently.

President Lungu said ECOSOCC was cardinal in the development agenda of African countries.

Mr. Lungu said that was why Zambia was keen to host the ECOSOCC headquarters in Lusaka.

“I can only assure you that Zambia has embarked on a serious transformational agenda to ensure that we reach out to our remotest parts of the country and develop in a progressive manner for the wellbeing of the poor people,” he said.

He said ECOSOCC’s presence in Zambia would encourage government to work even harder in the country’s infrastructure and economic development agenda.

“There is no finishing line in development. We always aspire for more,” he said.

The President said meaningful development cannot be achieved without involving civil society organisations and other stakeholders in the country.

Mr. Lungu said the respect for human rights and the promotion of democracy and good governance will guarantee all Zambians a better place to live in.

He has since assured ECOSOCC that the Zambian government will support its operations in the country.

The ECOSOCC delegation is in Zambia pursuant to the country’s decision to align the organ’s statutes and define a structure which it should have here.

ECOSOCC will be the first AU organ that will be hosted in Zambia since the country attained political independence in 1964.

Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Harry Kalaba, his Permanent Secretary Chalwe Lombe and Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU, Susan Sikaneta attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the African Union (AU) has wished Zambia and her citizens well as the country approached the 2016 general elections day.

ZANIS reports that ECOSOCC presiding officer, Joseph Chilengi said his organisation was wishing President Edgar Lungu and the Zambian people the best in the elections.

Dr. Chilengi said this in his message written in the Visitors’ book at State House today.

The 15-ECOSOCC delegation held a meeting with President Lungu today.

“ECOSOCC delegations wish the President and the people of Zambia best wishes as you proceed to elections,” read the message in part.

Dr. Chilengi has meanwhile requested the people of Zambia to look at President Lungu’s leadership positively and with confidence.

Zambia won the decision to relocate the ECOSOCC secretariat to Lusaka and a place for the construction of offices has since been identified.

The ECOSOCC delegation is in Zambia following the country’s decision to align the organ’s statutes and define a structure which it should have here.

ECOSOCC will be the first AU organ that will be hosted in Zambia since the country attained political independence in 1964.

  3. I cannot wait for this weak hypocrite called Lungu to leave the political stage. He is an embarrassment of epic proportions

    • Lungu and peaceful co-existence with other political players cannot be said under one breath. Lungu is such a lying scumbag for misleading visitors to Zambia. Lungu is at the forefront of beating up opponents and setting the police on the opposition. Lungu is just a lanky drunk version of Idi Amin.

    • Edgar naena too much show off. Why not meet those so many people where they had there lunch? State house nabalamfya

    • Zambia’s currency, the kwacha, is the world’s best-performing currency of 2016, the Bloomberg news agency reports. It says that its value against the US dollar has risen 19.9% since the beginning of January. That rise outstrips the increase in the price of gold. This comes off the back of the kwacha being labelled one of the worst-performing currencies of last year. That was precipitated by a fall in the copper price, one of the country’s main exports, as well as a power shortage.Bloomberg quotes an analyst suggesting that the kwacha will continue to rise as the copper price recovers.

    • This Kwacha appreciation is similar to the Kwacha strength during KK era, when foreign currency was hard to come by except at Katondo street.

If the kwacha is indeed gaining so much, is it matched with the availability of the dollar on the market? If not then this gain is artificial and not market determined at all.

Coming to the subject of good governance that this Lungu hypocrite is on about, I would like to say , I will only believe him when he allows political parties like UPND to visit the people of CB to assure them that things will improve when UPND gets in power because PF ‘s failure is like an exposed butt for all to see , including children.

Apart from that, Lungu should arrest all those PF cadres perpetrating violence to add meaning to his claim of good governance,…

Vote UPND and the HH team for a better Zambia.

  4. THE STRONG WIND OF CHANGE IS SWEEPING ALL ACROSS ZAMBIA. THIEVES AND LOOTERS HAVE TO BE KICKED OUT OF POWER THIS AUGUST. EDGAR LUNGU IS A LIABILITY TO ZAMBIA. LUNGU HAS TO BE KICKED OUT OF STATE HOUSE. HE HAS WASTED A LOT OF OUR TIME. ABASH LUNGU. VIVA HH VIVA!

      Need I say more

  5. You can not develop every piece of Zambia. You are not strategic Mr President. You have to prioritise and not throw money in the push by developing roads which are used by 5 vehicles in a day

  6. All talk…what does lazy lungu know about good governance when he is always issuing directives to everything including the police.

  7. THE PROFESSIONAL FAILURE (PF) LEADER HAS HAS REALLY DESTROYED THE COUNTRY. LUNGU MUST GO AND LUNGU WILL GO – SAVE ZAMBIA FROM DOOM. ANYONE ELSE BUT LUNGU EVEN MILES WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER PRESIDENT.

  8. Zambia’s kwacha has gone from the world’s third-worst performance in 2015 to the best this year, outshining gold, silver and 150 other other currencies and precious metals tracked by Bloomberg. Further gains are in store as copper prices recover, according to ETM Analytics

  9. I like the forum..the truth of the matter is UPND cannot win these elections. Its a good party with same policies as PF..the leader is not markatable..no matter the efforts.
Ladies and gentle, say what you want but don’t be buried in hate..reality will be seen shortly.
Think of this: the man campained for 3 months but was beaten by someone who campaigned for only 3 weeks. This should ring a bell in someone. Yet others feel the results were 50-50. Watch this space…just plan your economic well being..and don’t support too much..because the dissapointment can send you to grave.

  10. That was a sympathy vote, terrain has changed, I voted PF, please convince me to vote for you again, amidst skyrocketing ubunga price, loadshedding, violence on opponents, many who voted PF in 2015, are not happy, this is a fact.
