Violence broke out in Matero Sunday afternoon after police fired tear gas canisters to stop a UPND youth rally held at Matero Community Hall.

The rally which was attended by a huge crowd comprising mainly UPND and sympathisers of area MP Miles Sampa was peaceful until police stormed the venue and ordered that the event be stopped.

This was despite the police having issued the UPND with a permit two weeks ago to hold the rally.

The UND cadres and officials had to scamper in all directions after tear gas was fired with some sustaining minor injuries in the process.

UPND Vice President Canisius Banda was one of the key officials who was caught up the fracas.

The UPND cadres later reorganised themselves and descended the local PF party offices on Commonwealth and destroyed property in revenge attacks.

In an interview after the disturbances, Dr Banda said the UPND is disappointed with the unprofessional behaviour of the police.

“With the awareness of the police, today, in our thousands as concerned youths, we assembled in Matero so that we could confer as citizens. On instruction, the police threw teargas canisters at us, that is how with tears in our eyes, we left, our hearts heavy,” Dr Banda said.

Meanwhile, the ruling PF successfully held its own youth rally in Lusaka’s Bauleni area Sunday afternoon.

  1. We are not surprised that UPND, after being restrained went on to destroy PF property. This is what Kaponya (HH) andd GBM are teaching youths. Can we peace loving Zambians allow this type of party to ascend to power? We say no. A big NO. Campaigns can only be conducted after 16th May and you are busy abrogating the Law Canicius Banda.

    • Why not learn from the Peaceful Friends (PF)? LT writes “Meanwhile, the ruling PF successfully held its own youth rally in Lusaka’s Bauleni area Sunday afternoon.”
You can clearly see there was no violence in Bauleni, only peace. These Under5 people seriously need to grow up. Why is it that everywhere UPND goes, all you hear is violence. This Mapatizya formula is not good for your party or our country.

    • PF can delay their fate but can not stop the change coming on 11 August 2016.

If they carry on being unfair HH will stop restraining them and they will start attacking the police head on.

You can not stop a revolution coming because if you do people will rise up.

    • May its a recipe of brother Scott’s much toted sbout plan of making Zambia ungovernable and brother HH’s Amagedon to force President Lungu resign. Reality an over ambitious dream. Violence begets violence and this violence has no eyes it can maim the agitator too. Careful with such dreams.

    • @kudos
I have never stopped wondering if you do believe the things you post on this site yourself. You must be benefiting real good from being such a cadre.
So it’s okay for PF to hold a rally but not okay for UPND?
Anyway, it’s an obvious straight answer I expect but nothing ever makes sense for that tough skull of yours

    • Stop violence guys and respect police orders. Work with the law enforcement officers doing everything possible to sustain law and order. Whatever they do, its for the good of society. Stop being antagonistic you politicians are riskin lives and national peace. Violence has no positive dividends. Refuse plans of making the country ungovernable or Amagedon against yourselves.

    • I don’t agree with the police conducting themselves in this manner. This ought to be investigated so they can get to the root cause. My hope is that the government has no hand in this. I do not agree with the insatiable desire for Hakainde to be president at all cost, but he should lose in a fair and square manner. We r all Zambians at the end of the day

    • @ Kudos,
      @Senior Citizen,

Words are irrelevant, actions have value
You want peace and order then peace and order shall prevail.
You want to treat free people of Zambia like slaves, be careful what are you wishing for.
Try to remember words from the Holly Bible, “eye for eye, tooth for tooth, life for life”. Do you remember “Comrade” Chausesku, “Comrade” Milosevic, “Comrade” Karume?
Have you forgotten lessons of Biafra, Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi…………………
Be careful, you may start the fire which will end by consuming you.
Read history instead of empty party slogans.

    • Lungu is a coward. If he think he is popular let him just campaign and lose with dignity not this violence he is bring. LUNGU MUST GO AND LUNGU WILL GO

    • UPND were given a permit 2 weeks ago, we need to find out why the police decided to stop the meeting and in the manner in which they decided to stop it. Let democracy prevail.

    • @Kudos you are fool to believe that UPND caused this fracas, the party applied for a permit 2 weeks before and the PF police had 14 days not to give the UPND a go ahead but chose to allow them to hold the rally. Upon realizing that UPND numbers were more than Pathetic Fools numbers they ordered the IG to stop UPND rally at all costs. Now tell me this, If the police did not invoke usage of tear gases do you think we would have had such attacks? Problem with PF sympathizers you cannot see beyond your noses, this is why the economy is in tatters now. Remember Kudos PF will be in opposition one day, it doesn’t mean they will be immune ill treatment!

    • PF the factory of violence has been causing mayhem, maiming people and robbing right under the watch and protection of Police. Chagwa Lungu has been boasting that PF youths can beat UPND youths! Boasting…boasting….

PF youths are the cause of yesterday’s UPND self defensive action…..Police are now paying for the lawlessness that they tolerated to breed amongst PF thugs.

Make no mistake. There comes a time when people say enough is enough and face their tormenting Goliath headon! PF thugs led by Lungu are the Goliath mocking peaceful citizens. The time to face and square with PF violence has come. Goliath has already fallen!! It’s don’t kutina pantu mwenso ninfwa. PF nayo inalumpakale….PF nayo inalumpakale….sinibbwelela..sinibbwelela …sinibbwelela monga Nevers…

    • “Peaceful Friends” – really???? Kudos, it is nice to see that YOU ENJOY AMAFI FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER & STILL NEVER GET SATIATED!!

Vote wisely 11/8/2016!! Vote Zambia FORWARD!! Vote UPND!! Abantu baya!!

      I thank you!!

    • God, I declare that every lying tongue is wrong and that truth prevails. Put a hook in their nostrils, bridle their lips, and hide me from the scourge of their tongue. I come against falsehoods, slander, speculation, accusation, misrepresentation, and character assassination against HH. Daddy God, cause the heavens to bow down with divine judgment; cast forth lightning to scatter them; shoot out Your arrows to destroy them; send Your hand from above and rid me of them. HH will lose no ground or territory gained through their undermining efforts or initiatives. I superimpose the prophetic word over all abortive measures, strategies, and tactics of the enemy. I prohibit the accuser of the brethren from operating or influencing the souls or minds of Zambians against HH.

    • Kudos I dont agree with you. And let me put it on record Iam not a UPND sympathiser but a PF sympathiser but still i dont see what wrong the UPND made after following laid down procedures to hold their youth rally.

This country does not belong to PF but belongs to the Zambian people and UPND are Zambians. It is therefore not acceptable to treat them like second class citizens when PF is holding its rallies freely.

Even Sata despite being called the King Cobra was more tolerant than this crop of PF leadership. I urge the police to behave professionally instead of operating like robots being remote controlled.Use your judgement Kanganja or you are disqualifying yourself as Inspector General of Police. Sooner or latter, the axe will fall on you even if PF wins the elections

    • #Kudog what do you do for a living because as far as i m concerned you are just jobless idi.ot who want to pass time by vomiting rubbish so as to seek attention .

    • #Kudog get a job tea car ra iwe and do something for your prostitu.te woman who fyonanji you bulunkoyo.ko

    • During RB’S presidency, Sata ‘s PF as the second largest party was said to be peaceful because of RB who maintained peace by making sure that all PF were not disturbed by the ruling party cadres. Even today if el can emulate rb there can not be violence. The way pf cadres do not provoke violence to FDD and other small parties if they can do the same to UPND THERE CAN’T BE VIOLENCE. THE KEY IS THE RULING PF CADRES. Even now if PF cadres can provoke violence to FDD gathering the same thing can happen between PF and FDD.

    • there was no violence in bauleni because police didn’t throw tear gas at pf rally. this system of stepping on peoples right to assemble is not right. if the police had not disturbed UPND Rally, not a single pf property would have been destroyed. the act of destroying property wasn’t right, but UPND acted out of frustration because they were frustrated.

  2. Imwe ba fee colour ba bull jew, double standards yenu ikamiletelela..come August 12 someone must be fired for this.
U were saying Miles is not a factor in Matero so why r u scared today?
Ba kapokola we apeal to u,b professional in yo work.Politicians wil come and go, think about yo jobs and children.

  3. You allow PF to hold a similar event in Bauleni yet you cannot allow the opposition to do the same.Surely we have dogs posing as leaders.A very sad day for mother Zambia. This is the worst ever regime Zambia has been cursed with.PF bane kuya bebele.

  4. HERE THE PF CADRES WERE VERY WRONG. WE DONT WANT WAR. LEAVE UPND ALONE. ESPECIALLY THAT THEY HAVE BEEN CRYING FOR FAIR TREATMENT. PF NEED TO PUT THEIR HOUSE IN ORDER.

  5. Change is already here – like it or not. The writing is on the wall. PF can delay the process but cannot stop it.

  6. The quality of reporting is very much wanting. No investigative journalism to explain how this came about. Did the police just start throwing teargas? Who provoked who? No smoke without fire.

    • Nono. UPND HAD A PERMIT TO HOLD A RALLY. POLICE HAD NO RIGHT TO INTERFERE. THE ONLY REASON THIS CAME WAS INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE INCOMPETENT PERSON HIMSELF WHO KNEW THE CROWD WAS VERY LARGE AND FEARS LEAVING OFFICE. LUNGU PLEASE PACK YOUR BAGS PEACEFULLY. THE WHOLE REALLY WAS PEACEFUL UNTIL THE POLICE AND PF CARDERS CAME

  7. IN THREE MONTHS ZAMBIANS HAVE A CHOICE TO CHANGE THE DESTINY OF THE COUNTRY BY CHOOSING THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE PRESIDENCY POSITION. BELOW IS A COMPARISION BETWEEN THE TWO MAJOR POLITICAL PLAYERS: HAKAINDE HICHILEMA POPULARLY KNOW AS HH
    – Current UPND presidential candidate
    – Economist and successful businessman
    – Accused of privatization which was actually done by the government and had no to little involvement other than consultative work.
    – History of success – turn things around
    – Understands the fundamentals of the economy
    – Does not believe in heavy borrow but been economically independent
    – Articulates issues and deals with them in a proper manner
    – Focused and understands how to prioritize
    – Visionary and forward thinking planner

    • Remember this song of defiance against KK in 1991? The we sang about Kavindele and now it is Nevers Mumba!

      1, 2, 3….go!!

      Sinibbwelela monga Nevers Mumba, (x3)
      PF nayo inalumpakale (x2)
      sinibbwelela monga Nevers!!

      ++++++++++++

Don’t kutina ba UPND youths…this is your finest hour…..you are making history now of defeating a bloody thirsty Goliath monster whose head is Chagwa Lungu!!

  8. LUNGU POPOULARLY KNOW AS “ME TOO”
    – Current PF presidential candidate
    – Lawyer but “Awa sure!” very different from the late LPM
    – Accused of swindling a client and found guilty
    – Highest cost of living and corruption levels under his presidency
    – Worst currency performance during his presidency
    – Lost priorities as he commissions everything like foreign shopping malls that least benefit the Zambian people
    – Increases his own salary
    – Charterers an airplane at the cost of 300K USD instead
    – Spends almost 2 billion Eurobond borrowed money on infrastructure and does not know how to pay back

  9. I THINK THE CHOICE IS CLEAR. CAN ALL WELL MEANING ZAMBIANS START BOARDING FLIGHT HH SO WE CAN MAKE OUR COUNTRY BETTER.

  10. Police worked under PF instructions, PF has been breaching the constitution from day one of assuming office as far as freedoms of citizens are concerned. It’s time for them to go. All the people supporting police are fake PF bloggers pretending to be mere citizens. Any normal person can see that the violence was ignited by the police who fired tears gas at a peaceful rally. May God Almighty punish those authorities who instructed police.

  11. This is the beginning of the end of PF in Lusaka. Using force to proof that you are popular does not work. Them are holding a rally yet opposition is denied. Well, time of reckoning is coming.

  12. So this Satanit HH will talk too much on this nonsense of his blind followers being tear gased, but if ritual killings are happening no comment ati njala

    • @ Suntwe
I hope you know the meaning of your name in some dialect. Anyway, your hate & bitterness will consume you if you let it!

  13. GRADE 12 SHOW OFF

    Trying to show off that one actually reached G12 level of education;
    Political Parties Chemistry quiz:-

MODERATOR: Name one gas that you know!
    *Bo INONGE WINA: Oxygen gas.
    *NEVERS MUMBA: Hydrogen gas.
    *GBM : Tear gas.
*MODERATOR (shocked): GBM, I am giving you one last chance!
    GBM : Fabregas!

  14. But why did the police disturb a peaceful gathering and yet they had allowed them to convene two week ago. I foresee a situation were PF will be holding rallies while the opposition rallies will be disturbed by the police. I know all Zambians love peace and we have seen the disturbances in the neighboring countries, but the PF through the police are brewing something that they will not comprehend when thing run out of hand. Freedom is to allow people mingle and discuss their issues, we cannot have a police that keep favoring only the party in power. I wonder if the EL and his cronies even get permits!

  15. I don’t know why PF can’t just leave others. Do u have to behave like this in order to win elections. Actually u are making yourselves unpopular. The country has now learnt to be violent no wonder the xenophobic attacks some weeks ago. I am PF but on their violence which doesn’t suit in our peaceful country it’s wrong. Plis stop this

  16. So zambia police work with the pf cadres. Foolish lungu, how can u send your foolish police cadres to disrupt a peaceful rally. Pf had there own rally in bauleni without hindrance. You are just bringing bad lucky on yourself. When God says yes who are u to say awe. And Ba police don’t get excited, you will soon regret your actions. Be professional don’t be partisan, governments come and go.

  17. You can tell even from the way they look. Not peace makers or law enforcers but brutal hooligans. What a Police. I thought the Late Dr Chiluba changed the name from Police Force to Police Services. Seems nothing has changed. AFRICA

  18. This Unprofessional Police Force, carrying out crimes on behalf of outgoing P.F.
SURELY IF A PERMIT WAS ISSUED, WHY THE BRUTAL POLICE REPRESSION??
Of course these Bandits masquerading as a Police force will pay after August elections.
IN THE MEANTIME WE HAVE TO BEAR WITH A CRIMINAL KUDOS, WHO IS KAMBWILIS TWIN BROTHER SPEWING BRAINLESS FROTH, WHILE HIS BELLY IS FILLED WITH TAXPAYERS CASH IN SOME EMBASSY ABROAD. Donchi worry Kudos, enjoy, as you only have a few months left!!

    • ZP still stuck in crowd control methods of the 60s….if anything teargasing causes more confusion, stampeed and danger to a crowd.

  19. It’s strange that the police allowed a similar PF rally to go ahead and disrupted the UPND rally… that is the kind of double standard that can breed violence and set the country on fire. I think Zambians have been taken for granted for far too long by those in power and the police. This so called ‘peace’ will one day come to an end… patience is a diminishing resource that doesn’t last forever.

  20. Why tear gas them after issuing a police permit two weeks before the rally?Something is not right here!

  21. What I find strange is that ZNBC never picked this event as news whilst they picked the Bauleni rally. Strange isn’t it!

  22. PF the factory of violence has been causing mayhem, maiming people and robbing right under the watch and protection of Police.

The time to face and square with PF violence has come. It’s don’t kutina pantu mwenso ninfwa.

    Kudos is EC Lungu.

  23. “With the awareness of the police, today, in our thousands as concerned youths, we assembled in Matero so that we could confer as citizens. On instruction, the police threw teargas canisters at us, that is how with tears in our eyes, we left, our hearts heavy,” Dr Banda said.

According to the UN, a youth is a young person aged between 15 and 24 years and the African Youth Charter defines a youth as one aged between 15 and 35 years. Dr Canisius Banda is over 40 years old. Is he a youth as he implies in this statement? I have problems with elderly people who want to masquerade as youths.

    • @stringer what kind of constipated thinking is this…DR. canisius banda is a very respectable leader. cant be compaired to the so called “DR chimbwili kashiba”.

    • @ Stringer

I do not have problem with your interpretation of “youth”.
What is amazing its your acceptance of police brutality whilst quoting UN? Shame on you. Accepting criminal acts as a “way of life” and jet, having courage to complain about somebody age.
Masquerading as “learned” individual or just “power” of 1mbecility has taken over your tiny intellect?

  24. @Kudos you are fool to believe that UPND caused this fracas, the party applied for a permit 2 weeks before and the PF police had 14 days not to give the UPND a go ahead but chose to allow them to hold the rally. 25. Tongas, no amano. PF is inspecting development projects in bauleni & explaining progress to the beneficiaries. U what development projects do u ve to show? Yo ka kachema can’t even maintain a primary school he went to in his village & yet he claims to care about his pipo. Police will continue to cancell yo smo rallies. Just wait & c. U ve another 10 yrs in opposition coming fo u

    • And even Banda, Sampa, GBM, Scott are now Tonga.?!…what blindness hate brings!

Call us what comforts you….the liberation of Zambia has begun!!!!

    • Only 78 days for this s.tupid kudog to enjoy his PF. As for you backward Wilz stop boring us with your PF filth trash of tribe. We know know you uneducated PF dogs as perpetrators of Tribe which educated Zambians do not subscribe to.

  26. Let us exercise a little patience 16 May is not too far just because PF held a rally in Bauleni we also want to follow suit? Let has have our own agenda that is driven by principle and rule of law. Let us not be like MCS who as opposition leader refused to yield to the Vice Presidents motorcade and indeed when he came to power he was as lawless as they come. Nominating more MPs then the law requires, appointing Kambwili to head foreign affairs, merging Tourism and Foreign Affairs, Appointing Guy as Vice President not realizing it was against the law to allow the most bopusa muzungu as President…..11 August the nation will decide and then perhaps we can set aside this part-time job called campaign roll up our sleeves and end load shedding, repair the roads etc.

  27. God, I declare that every lying tongue is wrong and that truth prevails. Put a hook in their nostrils, bridle their lips, and hide me from the scourge of their tongue. • I prohibit the accuser of the brethren from operating or influencing the souls or minds of Zambians against HH.I establish divine parameters, boundaries and borders, and legislate and establish the laws of the kingdom of heaven to govern all political, economic, and social activities within Zambia. I overrule (disallow and veto) every diabolical sanction, subverting activity, injunction, directive, mandate, or order, which opposes the will of the Lord concerning the saving plan of HH and UPND for Zambia.

  28. This is what you get when you replace a Professional IG with a cadre, things back fire on your very face, that is if you have any face at all. We have seen regimes come and go, it is just in this one where policemen are chased and disarmed by mere students. Ala ifyakuchenjela pa bupyani filoca.

  29. Kangaja does not love Lungu that is why he is using Police to make him unpopular. The PF police think by gassing innocent Zambians UPND will look bad no you actually are making it popular watch the space Zambian are watching. Remember the airport round about pangas, the Kabwata chains, the Kanyama fracus uuummmm.

  30. The people who were teargased were members of an alliance. UPND got the permit. But the rally was being held by DF.

DF is not registered in Zambia, hence the police action.

    • And that according to you gives “right” to the police to adopt criminal Beauvoir?

Are you 1mbecile or just one of those parasites licking-up to Plunderers Federation?

  31. A police permit was issued for a youth rally, but maybe UPND were following in the footsteps of their god and insulting the President instead of campaigning, in which case it was in order to cancel their rally to avoid violent reactions from people who are not happy with insulting language, such as the one we saw in the Past News of Sunday by HH.

    • And maybe Plunderers Federation boss issued wrong instruction to police because under influence of “Jameson”?

You are so much away from the truth as the convicted embezzler from the trust.

  32. Ka Lovemore kamuli Chintelelwe once said,” Akanyelele nga wakapimpila kalasuma.”

I think ba pf and the police were asking for it. They are trying to push their colleagues in the corner.
And don’t think this time they are going to be quite.

Even the so called Peace, is that what you call peace when others are enjoying rallies without a permit but you are being victimize ninshi nafyonse naukonka.
Nganinkondo (war) let it come kabili kufyalo konse balelwa.

  33. Some people are preparing themselves for the road to Van Hague. Just remember Ivory Coast. Each person must take responsibility of their actions.

  34. @33 Tutu, Oh I see, so what are they crying about?

@32 Chilakukalipa, now you think Stella was more professional, that is the opposite of what you said about her when she was IG. You have always cried foul when the issue is simply that you are required to follow the law. The PF rally in Bauleni was lawful and peaceful right inside Scott’s backyard. Why else would Police issue UPND a permit and cancel it when the rally is in progress? That is beyond police professionalism, it is the insults which police fear will provoke violence. Next time use civil language or else you will never hold any rally at all.

  35. Police must apologize for causing the fracas and such incidences should not recur in the future. We demand clean issue based campaigns not fights and insults day in day out. However, destroying property is criminal and should not be tolerated by every Zambian.

  36. @Mr Kudos & Senior Citizen,
It’s time you two brainwashed PF cadres started liberating your thinking and look at issues objectively.
The report here clearly states that the UPND were issued with a permit 2 weeks ago and it further says all was calm at the rally until the PF police arrived to create confusion. Clearly the PF police as usual were under orders from their criminal leaders to do what they did. It is very much similar to how Lungu used acts of violence to force his adoption for the presidency at Mulungushi. Unfortunately Mr Kudos & Senior Citizen can’t see all this.

  37. Any well meaning person should condemn this primitive behaviour by the government of the day. They preach one thing and do exactly the opposite. They use the unprofessional police to their own selfish political ends. What a government! Surely, its too ghastly to contemplate another 5 years of this rubbish. There is serious need to ensure that this lot is sent to the garbage heap of political history.

  38. @evans, I do not think you like reading. You must therefore be hard core cadre. UPND applied for a permit 2 weeks before that event, so there was no copying involved. Read the story again, that is assuming you had read it the 1st time before commenting.

  39. All seveth de members and tongas, lozis etc where told to attend without fail it seventh vs catholic + the rest.blokers will tell u from there ~ full of hatred observed from seventhde attack on catholic very sinful.why cant u mind yo bussiness
