The Electoral Commission of Zambia says political party leaders should take full responsibility of the actions of their supporters and cadres.

ECZ Chairperson Justice Esau Chulu says political parties should not view next month’s elections as a matter of life and death.

Speaking in Lusaka this morning during a meeting of all presidential candidates on the need for peaceful campaigns, Justice Chulu reminded the candidates who include President Edgar Lungu of the commitment they made to ensure peaceful campaigns during the interparty indaba facilitated by the church.

He has also called on the police to apply the public order Act fairly as they maintain law and order.

Justice Chulu however, stated that Police should ensure that perpetrators of violence and anyone caught abrogating the electoral code of conduct is dealt with firmly, without favor.

And Justice Chulu said the commission has been closely monitoring events on the ground in Lusaka and Namwala districts and has established that the political environment has been relatively quiet following suspension of campaigns.

He however regretted that some political parties have abrogated the ban as branded campaign vehicles have been seen moving around.

Those attending the meeting which has gone into a closed door session are UPND president Hakainde Hichilema,UPP’s Saviour Chishimba,FDD’s Edith Nawakwi,UNIP’s Tilyenji Kaunda and Rainbow party’s Wynter Kabimba among others.

  1. Just say the PF has abrogated the ban as branded campaign vehicles have been seen moving around. Stop beating about the bush like an illiterate person.

    • Even without Chagwa’s job, you can survive as you are educated and not there by chance or accident.

  2. ” I call upon” ” I wish to warn”……. Open ended common empty words/statements without action from leaders who are not decisive.

  3. Let us hope there will be frank talk there with some proofs to one another on how and who is fanning political violence and came out with a conclusive decision on how to handle the situation there after. These are the dirties elections most of us have seen since the return to multiparty system. We need to diffuse this atmosphere before it gets out of hand! We hope there is proper moderation and a communique issued after that closed meeting – not just meetings for the sake of it!!

  4. We know that most of the violence is directed by Lungu and perpetrated by PF thugs using state machinery. Given that these ECZ Commissioners are appointed and owe their allegiance to the appointing authority how do call a sitting President to order? Most of the violence on Opposition supporters is from PF thugs acting on orders from hypotrical Lungu. Lungu should shape up or ship out. Voters will punish Lungu on Polling Day for this violence.

  5. Hexit Hexit (HH) attended the meeting thinking someone is trying rig. As 11 August draws nearer and nearer Kachema is getting mad by the hour, whilst Fat Albert and cartel are busy scheming on the official take over of UPND, another case of political history in the bin.
Zambians just love President lungu and the PF, period!

  6. Chulu dont a coward name and shame them starting with the Lazy Bum who running to prayers and also HH for hiding behind his cadres who being killed insteas of leading from the front.

  7. HH as usual taking with him his unruly cadres to the high profile meeting. After police reject his filthy cadres entrance he starts insulting. What a pig in a human being this 1diot is. Later he starts blaming Ecl as usual when it was only him who behaved violently.
