OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Statement on UPND Rallies

We would like to make it clear to the Zambia Police that the UPND will be going ahead with its final rally on August 10th in Chawama, despite coming under pressure from those seeking to abuse their office for partisan advantage.

We have submitted all the necessary documentation and followed due process. There is no sound or credible reason why we should not go ahead.

During the campaign period, our permits and permissions have been resisted, denied or cancelled at last minute on numerous occasions in a blatant attempt to obstruct us and try and stop our campaigns. This has created an uneven playing field in which we are clearly being disadvantaged.

It is extremely important that in these last few days all parties are allowed to campaign freely if the elections are to have any credibility, something we hope the election observers now registered in the country are watching closely.

As the police may recall ahead of the 2015 presidential by-election both the PF and the UPND held their final rallies in Lusaka both and it was not a problem.

Hakainde Hichilema
UPND President

    • Lungu has no debating skills just like Sata was, MHSRIP. This is why this country has gone deep into poor economic performance

    • If PF and UPND hold rallies on the same day, the 10th, UPND will have a much bigger audience than PF, and Lungu, aka Chakolwa the drunken master wouldn’t want to see that.

      Viva HH and GBM

    • MY ADVICE TO PRESIDENT LUNGU IS THAT HE SHOULD RESPECT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE. THEY FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE TO GOVERN THEMSELVES. IN 1991 ZAMBIANS DECIDED TO BRING BACK MULTIPARTISM. THANKS TO THAT DECISION TODAY LUNGU IS PRESIDENT, OTHERWISE KAUNDA, LIKE MUGABE, WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN IN POWER TODAY. I CALL UPON PRESIDENT LUNGU TO RESPECT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE. “DON’T INTRODUCE YOUR DRACONIAN MEASURES FOR YOUR SELFISH INTERESTS. ZAMBIANS HONOURED YOU TO BE THEIR PRESIDENT, YOU SHOULD APPRECIATE THAT HONOUR NOT BY INTRODUCING DRACONIAN MEASURES BUT BY ALLOWING THEM TO FREELY EXERCISE THEIR DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO CHOOSE THEIR NEXT LEADER WHOEVER THEY WILL DEEM FIT TO LEAD THEM. USE YOUR HEAD AND NOT YOUR HEART. THE DRACONIAN MEASURES WILL WORK AGAINST YOU.” LET THIS TIMELY ADVICE BE…

    • If it is to hold rally in friend’s village in Chawama, then Lungu should also go and hold a rally in New Kasama.

    • TO THE SECURITY AND DEFENCE WINGS: REMEMBER YOUR DUTY IS TO SERVE NATIONAL INTERESTS NOT THE INTERESTS OF AN INDIVIDUAL WHO IS FRIGHTENED TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE. ZAMBIA IS A DEMOCRACY. THIS TIME WILL NOT BE THE FIRST TIME THAT ZAMBIANS WILL BE CALLED UPON TO ELECT THEIR NEXT LEADER. THEY DID SO IN 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2008, 2011 AND 2015. ON ALL THESE OCCASIONS ZAMBIANS CONDUCTED THEMSELVES PEACEFULLY. THIS TIME AROUND IT WILL NOT BE DIFFERENT. I AM APPEALING TO THE COMMANDS TO RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF ZAMBIANS TO VOTE FOR A LEADER OF THEIR CHOICE. REFUSE TO BE USED BY A SELFISH INDIVIDUAL. LET EVERY ZAMBIAN CAMPAIGN FREELY. THIS COUNTRY IS NOT FOR PRESIDENT LUNGU BUT FOR ALL ZAMBIANS. LUNGU SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO ABUSE THE PRIVILEDGE BESTOWED ON HIM BY ZAMBIANS.

    • Kudos or whatever,
why cant PF and its supporters just stay away? Here you don’t have labour members going to liberal members functions. That’s why there is trouble. Stay away you dirty PF f00ls. That’s it.

No wonder you all smell in your underpants.

    • Lungu should be carefull to read HH monouvers regarding chawama rally. HH is very much aware that he is loosing so his plans are to creat confusion so that elections can either be cancelled or declared not free and fare. Getting back to chawama where he knows there is potential for confrontation with the majority PF cadres is his stratergy. This explains why he wrote the letters to the UN and other region bodies becoz he has seen blood shed already. This is a properly calculated move. The police should wake up and protect lives

    • PF is counting on police for killing some more people what a shame. Jay Jay, PF was given a chance and all they have to show for are the following
      1. Devalued Kwacha from K5.6 to a dollar to now over K10.2 per dollar. close to 100% value loss
      2. Borrowing to the tune of $7.3billion, and now IMF is at the door step of every home, especially in Chawama
3.Inflation raising from 7% to 21%, that is 300% increase a hidden tax to the poor
      4. Loan interest rates now averaging 37%, what a cost of money. To put this into context, If you borrow K1000 from the bank, for a business. Your current value of your money is less 37% (K370) and 21% (K210), that leave you with K420 true value to use for growing your business that is true dununa reverse.

    • You are a fontini. During campaigns, candidates are free to campaign anywhere whether they repeat or move to new places. Your preferred candidate has been to Mpika, Nola, Kitwe thrice did you say why again to Mpika? At the same time he has failed to visit all constituencies. You are the people who are currently encouraging him claiming that he has already won and does not need to campaign. He has deliberately cancelled his rally in Choma but when he gets 0 votes there you climb on ant hills claiming Tongas are tribal.

  6. The PF Government is just scared of losing the election, thus they are using government institutions to frustrate the opposition. Previously, Parties hosted rallies in Lusaka on the final day without difficulties as long as they were held at different places and far apart, what has changed now??? UPND, PF, FDD and whoever wants to host rallies in the City should not be denied the opportunity as long as they have complied with all the requirements. Otherwise, since last month they (Police) cancelled UPND rally in Lusaka because PF had their rally there, then this time let the Police cancel the PF rally if they can not allow the two parties to proceed with rallies (that’s what is called fairness)!!!

  9. 2015 was violence free but now UPND are so violent that is why the police are refusing and why Chawama and not any other place since they have already been there? Looking for escape goat so that may be elections can be cancelled since they know that they cannot win. HH be a gentle man even if you are losing, lose with dignity.

  12. HH’s is typical of a man who thoughtlessly swallows a mango seed (Chimukoli), without thinking or considering the size of his own outlet. It is grandstanding and attention seeking. HH I hope you have realised since the death of Mapenzi at the hands of UPND militia, that a lizard that jumps from the tallest tree and falls to ground with a thud, much to crowd applause, will certainly feel the pain when alone at night. Only then reality set in.

  13. PEOPLE OPPOSING THIS MAN MUST BE VERY CAUTIOUS. THIS MAN KNOWS THAT HE IS LOSING. SO HE IS LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO REJECT THE POLLS. MY APPEAL IS THAT PLEASE GIVE HIM ENOUGH ROPE TO HUNG HIMSELF. LET HIM HOLD RALLIES ANYWHERE HE WANTS. AND FOR HIS SAKE MAYBE THE RULES SHOULD BE BENT SO THAT HE CAN BE ALLOWED TO CAMPAIGN EVEN ON THE 11TH OF AUGUST SO THAT HE CAN KNOW THAT ZAMBIANS HAVE REALLY REJECTED HIM. HE HAS TRIED EVERYTHING FROM CHECKING EMPTY ECZ TRUCKS TO ORGANIZING DEBATES WITH ECL, BUT HE HAS NOTED THAT IT IS STILL NOT WORKING FOR HIM. A BITTER MAN CAN DO ANYTHING. PLEASE LET HIM HOLD RALLIES. AND ECL SHOULD NOT WASTE TIME GOING ALL OVER. I DONT THINK ANY RALLIES WILL CHANGE PEOPLES MINDS AT THIS ELEVENTH HOUR.

    • I agree give Kalusa a longest rope. I dont even understand why he is insisting after all demi god snd his followers have leblled people of chawama as no entity’s and that nothing good can come out there. Lungu has been called names because of coming from there and now you want them to listen to your msgs mr. Rich man. ANYWAYS you go but i promise you, people feel insulted dont be misled with the crowds at your rally and also do not ferrypeople to chawama on the day if the rally.

  14. Sir, are campaigns allowed on eve of elections under the elections law? Your insistence to hold rally on 10th may be wrong. Consult your lawyers sir otherwise you will be embarrassed. Obedience puts you in good stead with society and you earn respect. If you don’t follow the law of the land God will snatch you out of the land like a plant Prov2:22 GNB. God Bless Zambia

    • @chosen,it would have been wise for you to check the electoral laws.YES campaigns are allowed as long as they are finished by 18hrs.unfortunately your ignorance on this matter makes me worry on how vasted u are in biblical understanding.

    • @Planzo/HH thanks for feedback. I can assure you the Scriptures are written on my heart & I’m more vested in the Word than secular laws. No need for you to go there. That is why I asked you to consult sir. Are you sure the law says 18hrs on 10/8? My source tells me law only provides for 3 months which ends on 13/8 from 16/5 & ECZ has set time table ending on 10/8 without time. I consulted. Where did you get 18hrs from?

  15. You can campaign anywhere but why always Chawama. What is sweet in edgar’s place. Every day Chawama Chawama. A person died because of Chawama. Is it Chawama which made Lungu to be popular. Anyway allow PF and the UPND to hold their final rallies in Lusaka but not near each other. It has to be opppsite poles so that they can repel violence. For instance Lusaka East and Lusaka West. In short not in the same or adjacent constituences, or in the same direction.
And UPND must not depend too much election observers now registered in the country. What are they watching closely, your everyday crying? Mind you they are also watching your behaviours how you are impounding ECZ vehicles and find nothing. I feel in my spirit like you are already crying for the lose of elections. I do not know who…

  17. Please ZP just allow this under 5 president to proceed with the rally but put in black and white that whatever happens at the rally, he will be held accountable. HH is arrogant but always runs away when things get tough. All peace loving Zambians must understand that police exist to maintain law and order but if some people believe that they can handle the heat of the public, let them go ahead.

  18. IT LOOKS LIKE HH WAS BORN COMPLAINING
    =============================
The statement above is full of past, present and future complaints; and repugnant bitterness. I wonder if he has ever opened his mouth without cursing, mumbling, accusing and well, simply complaining. Yak! He bores me me to the core of my entire physic framework. Put him in power and he will complain his entire tenure. Resist such leaders. He will see you as a burden and insult you all his tenure. Well, HH, go and rally in Chawama but behave, don’t sacrifice another life.

  19. My advice: It does not matter any more if one can be allowed to go round the country, even for seven times. The people have already decided. My advice to the ruling party is that they must be wise enough to give enough rope to whoever want to hang themselves. Denying them will automatically be a recipe for conflict. Last moments are usually very dangerous. My advice to the opposition parties is that you stop overdoing things, lest you have a hidden a gender.

  22. UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has written to United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon seeking intervention over President Edgar Lungu’s threats on democracy and the breakdown of law and order in the country.

Hichilema’s letter was copied to South African President Jacob Zuma, SADC chairman Ian Khama, COMESA secretary general Sindiso Ngwenya, chairperson of the African Union commission Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Dean of the African diplomatic corps David Banda and International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) executive secretary Muburi Muita.

Hichilema also wrote to American Ambassador Eric Schultz, Commonwealth secretary general Patricia Scotland, chairman of the African Union Idris Derby, new chairman of the African Union Paul Kagame, Ambassador of the Commission…

  23. @30 South Park, those diplomats have mo time for this U5. They all have better things to do.
U5 thinks that as a last rally he may just pick up a few votes.on Chawama. Sorry U5, we have already decided on ECL and we are not about to.change our minds.

  32. This idi0t called HH is a very irritating and nauseating soul. He wants to derail the process of elections in Lusaka at all costs, come what may. This is because he wants to cause anarchy so that the electoral body will cancel the elections. If he manages to do that then that would give him a chance at plot 1 without Lusaka because he knows he doesn’t stand a chance to win in Lusaka. The Police and Electoral Commission need to put this guy in his place that he is nothing and no better or bigger than Zambia, The Police should arrest him if he causes any more trouble and the ECZ should disqualify him for causing trouble, He is hoping for any of this to happen so that people will sympathize with him. Zambians do not vote for this buffoon.

  33. HH should learn to respect authorities. Suppose a Candidate had said because he applied to stand in UPND whether HH picks him or not he will stand under UPND ticket how would he feel? After voting please let’s have soldiers in Lusaka and Livingstone.
