Police have arrested 151 UPND supporters in Southern Province for riotous behavior related to post elections.
Riots broke out in several parts of Southern Province on Monday, shortly after President Edgar Lungu was declared winner of Thursday’s tightly contested elections.
Police Spokesman Rae Hamoonga disclosed that 53 people were apprehended in Choma while 53 others were picked up in Mazabuka and a further 26 nabbed in Monze.
In Namwala, six, were arrested while four were picked up in Sinazongwe and three were picked up in Kazungula District.
Mr Hamoonga said in Choma, police recorded five cases of Arson after the unruly mob ran amok and begun setting ablaze other people’s property.
“In Mwapona Compound, some UPND supporters set ablaze a house belonging to Kelvin Simimba, 45 of Zambia Compound. They also set on fire a restaurant belonging to Juliet Jere, 33 of Choma’s overspill destroying various properties. The unruly crowds also blocked a road using a rail slipper at Muzoka,” he said in a statement.
He said there were also riots in Monze Town and surrounding compounds around 1400 hours, where UPND supporters were burning tires and logs later also blocked roads with various objects.
Mr Hamoonga said Chibuyu Community Police post and eight motor vehicles packed at the police were damaged and make shift stands at Hamusonde market were burned and in the process, 25 males and one female were arrested.
“In Maamba, six, people of Chief Mweemba have been picked up for riotous behavior and malicious damage to property. They have been identified as Shemu Siankazi aged 18 years, Wisdom Sikanembe aged 23 years, Chipo Simapemo aged 22years Willy Siasidu aged 35 years, Clement Siamalambo aged 40 years and Lewis Simudini aged 45years. The accused persons blocked Mweemba road with rocks and logs later begun stoning houses perceived to be owned by Patriotic Front supporters. They further stoned Siatwinda Clinic.”
“In Kazungula district, three UPND cadres were arrested for damaging motor vehicles belonging to some Patriotic Front supporters.”
He said a Toyota Carina registration number ALG 9674, property of Floriah Maliwe had its wind screen damaged at Kaleya, in Mazabuka and another motor vehicle Toyota Ipsum registration number BAD 1141 belonging to Evaristo Malama also of Mazabuka was damaged while an unregistered Honda Fit, property of Constable Malama of Mazabuka also had its wind screen damaged and a house with property belonging to Evans Lungu, a PF supporter of Kabobola Compound was damaged by unknown people.
He said all those apprehended are detained in police custody and will appear in court soon.
“The situation has since been brought under control. We have intensified both foot and motorised patrols in the province to ensure that all those that would want to abrogate the law with impunity are brought to book.”
This is not time to mock the people from regions that voted for UPND. Currently, there’s too much insults being hurled on Tongas, Kaondes, Lozi, Lundas, Luvales etc.
Time to engage the Chiefs from these area.

The correct picture is that HH has been winning in the whole former Southern Rhodesia or Barotseland all the time. This gives you are story. Zambia is not united. There are many Barotse activits serving life sentences jails locked up by the Government. The arrests have not solved the dissatifaction. Tongas from the former Southern Rhodesia have been the most cooperative over the years. We may loose the cooperation of the whole former Barotseland if not careful and there will be no Zambia to talk of.
What vote was stolen in southern province for them to behave in that manner? All the valid votes were given to them in the areas where the riot occurred. Its a pity that they destroyed property for fellow poor tribes men/women what a shame.

@30 JNM, you are right. When Mazoka died Sakwiba the vice wanted to take the Presidency of this Tonga Party but the indunas refused saying it was a Tonga Party! Sakwiba, their cousin left and formed his own party! These tribalists think when the tribal party votes on tribal lines in Southern, Western and North-Western Province, they can win the Presidency? No they won in their region and not the all Zambia! The silly way of the people is seen on the blog daily in their comments and full of disrespect for others.

@Kabimba Zambia is not a quota system of government where you schedule which tribe will rule at which time. You market yourself and you become president. Mwanawasa a Lamba /Lenje became president but did all his tribesmen benefit anything? No only his relatives gained. Sata a Bisa only sent his relatives and in laws in foreign missions not all Bisas. I didn’t benefit from Chiluba although we’re are from the same district. Those who have been arrested while HH and his family will sleep in their expensive beds, them will be sleeping on the cold floor. Mmembe will influence your actions because there is a lot at stake for him. The ZWD will incite you while they are operating from an unknown place.

People like washing the Bemba tribe in the mud. Frankly speaking, Bembas are neutral people. If they wanted to vote on tribal/ region, they would have voted for Nawakwi or Sinkamba, Daughter for GBM. But we always look at Character. We normally say; icikwanka bachimwena Ku mampalanya. If HH show good character, we have no problem with him. Bembas don’t hate Tonga as tribe but the character of an individual. Pompous, arrogant, insulting etc.
True in Luapula we even have a tonga as a senior chief. My young brother who works for a mine in north western province complained to me that they would be killed if Lungu won the election. Like it or not no one goes into an election with a view to lose.
Suppose your wish to divide the country is realized, don’t you think you will be fighting on who should be president …..Lunda, Tonga, Lozi and the fighting will never end. By the way was Mwanawasa a Bemba?

Dear zambians, lets stop the tribal attacksa and accusations by educating one another that we are just one and the same. We are all bantus and have everything in common. My chiefs in central and southern province have titles similar to bemba titles. Eg lenje chiefs are called bene mukuni meaning big tree which is similar to bemba paramount chiefs chitimukulu. Why should i be insulted for a simple title called a tribe? In luapula we have chief mwenda, like in eastern province and souther province. We have chief moyo in southern province whose origin is from the east. We have chief sipatunyana in pemba whose origin is western province. Examples to shall our oneness are endless.
I blame HH for all this. These are the same chaps who troubled anyone who tried to campaign in SP including Lungu. Take the boko harams to jail where they belong.

They know how to interpret the word peace, no upnd member would waste a life coz it’s the very life they wanted to govern and when their leader steps out and calls for calm, everyone listens coz he speaks in no hidden terms. On the point of making it, all the candidates that offered themselves have already made it in life and they wanted to help you and me make it aswel, a call most didn’t answer.
