The United States government has congratulated President-elect Edgar Lungu and called on all candidates who took part in the August 11 to show leadership in respecting the official results as announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
Responding to the question asked on Zambia that the opposition was challenging the results of the presidential election, alleging vote rigging, riots were breaking out in the southern Province and whether the United States recognize the results of the re-election of President Lungu, United States Director of Press Relations Office and Acting Spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau said that United States welcomed the Zambian citizens’ democratic spirit which was characterized in voting on August 11th and encouraged all Zambians to maintain the good conduct exhibited during the vote, and if they have objections to the results, to use the approved legal mechanisms for peaceful redress.
Ms Trudeau said that the US Government noted the statements by many of the international election observer missions which highlighted concerns with the pre-electoral environment, specifically increased violence and restrictions on freedom of press and assembly and hoped that the government will address these concerns in the context of future elections to strengthen Zambian democracy.
Ms Trudeau concluded by saying that the US Government have a strong partnership with Zambia and with the Zambian people and looked forward to advancing the shared interests between the two nations.

The US has a very strong intelligence system. If the vote was rigged they would have pointed in that direction and the UN would not have congratulated ECL. HH should be inducted for ordering his cadres to riot – it is a criminal!

The USA did not say it recognises the results nor did it dispute them but only encouraging Zambians to stay calm whilst right appeal channels are being explored by the opposition. And this is the stance the US government takes, not siding with anyone in situationa like this one.
@Kolopa, so iwe you think USA is so mighty that they know everything that happens in other countries? The comments the woman made were in reference to what the observers have been saying or writing. They have no clue about these elections for them to suggest anything. EL won but others feel aggrieved about the manner elections were conducted and so the law provides them with the right to petition and we must just let them. Outsiders know nothing about the happenings especially that they were not fully covered by the media.

There is NO WHERE IN THAT SPEACH to state US recognise the results. To the contrary, she encouraged all disputes are to be channel through the appropriate legal system. Zambia needs a total clean up. @K Bweupe, those of us who have been here longer know that LT has been a pro PF for a long time especially during Sata’s elections. But they’re moderate PF sympathisers and do not delete any negative comments against the PF like they did during 2011. On the other hand, PF cadres like #Saulosi and the young #Senior Citizen do not see anything sensible outside PF, even when PF sheds blood or goes to ransack UPND offices.
UNDP ,HH, GBM and the rest should just listen and let go. If UNDP had garnered more MP s than PF their grievances would be tolerated. But no they were beaten at parliamentary elections. Does HH want to be a PRESIDENT of a majority PF parliament? or is that the PEOPLE THAT VOTED PF PARLIAMENTARINS VOTED FOR HH PRESIDENT. It cant be true. if Zambians are daring real protests let them try it.
