United States Director of Press Relations office and acting Spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau

The United States government has congratulated President-elect Edgar Lungu and called on all candidates who took part in the August 11 to show leadership in respecting the official results as announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Responding to the question asked on Zambia that the opposition was challenging the results of the presidential election, alleging vote rigging, riots were breaking out in the southern Province and whether the United States recognize the results of the re-election of President Lungu, United States Director of Press Relations Office and Acting Spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau said that United States welcomed the Zambian citizens’ democratic spirit which was characterized in voting on August 11th and encouraged all Zambians to maintain the good conduct exhibited during the vote, and if they have objections to the results, to use the approved legal mechanisms for peaceful redress.

Ms Trudeau said that the US Government noted the statements by many of the international election observer missions which highlighted concerns with the pre-electoral environment, specifically increased violence and restrictions on freedom of press and assembly and hoped that the government will address these concerns in the context of future elections to strengthen Zambian democracy.

Ms Trudeau concluded by saying that the US Government have a strong partnership with Zambia and with the Zambian people and looked forward to advancing the shared interests between the two nations.

    • The US has a very strong intelligence system. If the vote was rigged they would have pointed in that direction and the UN would not have congratulated ECL. HH should be inducted for ordering his cadres to riot – it is a criminal!

    • On these overt information sources we have uploaded more than enough free wisdom for HH to pick up in hope that he reads it and get healed fast. Unfortunately the youngman doesn’t understand fillers of the political world. Now he risks running this funeral alone. Many people are starting to move on. They know HH has his daughters building their future in Kentucky, USA while theirs are being seduced into a long lost battle in Zambia. Game over!

    • The USA did not say it recognises the results nor did it dispute them but only encouraging Zambians to stay calm whilst right appeal channels are being explored by the opposition. And this is the stance the US government takes, not siding with anyone in situationa like this one.

    • @Kolopa, so iwe you think USA is so mighty that they know everything that happens in other countries? The comments the woman made were in reference to what the observers have been saying or writing. They have no clue about these elections for them to suggest anything. EL won but others feel aggrieved about the manner elections were conducted and so the law provides them with the right to petition and we must just let them. Outsiders know nothing about the happenings especially that they were not fully covered by the media.

  2. I THINK THERE IS A SWAP SOMEHOW.DR NEVERS MUMBA IS THE ONE WHO’S NOW TALKING LIKE A SATANIST INSTEAD OF ENCOURAGING PEACE.
i WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH HH,TALKING PEACE AND TELLING ALL HIS SUPPORTERS TO BE PEACEFUL AS THEY WORK OUT THINGS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE MAN OF GOD IS THE ONE WHO’S UP IN ARMS TELLING EVERYONE NOT TO RECOGNISE EL IS PRESIDENT AND TO FIGHT FOR THE DEMOCRACY AND INCITING PEOPLE TO LOSE RESPECT.HE COULD BE RIGHT YES BUT HE SHOULD DO IT RIGHT AND ALSO BUILD BECAUSE NOT EVEN THE UPND TEHMSELVES CAN GOVERN A DIVIDED NATION.

  5. Of course these capitalists would like our folks to get on with it to avoid delay and empass with pushing the IMF $1.2billion loan down our throats though it is coming with stiff conditions which will result in severe sufferings on part of the masses. That is their major interest they dont give a hoot who won or lost the elections.

  7. Chipenzi, Nevers, GBM. These are a useless baggage to upnd. I said so about Kabimba to PF before president Sata died. I was proved very correct. Scot and Sampa had just one mission, to dislodge Lungu. Their quest starred and finished there. Tekere Banda, was as useless as a ‘inkonto yamu izula bayangana’. With the foregoing, UPND can do a rising and dusting episode. The potential inside is as great without the rantings of the types of Nevers Mumba and the blabbing of Scot or hopelessness of Miles Sampa. Shake off these worthless members.

    • It should start at the top. In my estimation, HH himself has stayed well past his SALE DATE—he his an expired DRUM OF CHIBWANTU!

Five times failure is enough for anyone to realize that maybe something was simply NEVER meant for them. I am sure UPND has plenty of capable Individuals who can takeover this Party and give it the NATIONAL APPEAL and ACCEPTABILITY it deserves.

UPND should go for a Convention and clean house right from the top, and make UPND attractive again. If the make a mistake of getting rid of only a few DEADWOODS, the likes of Sampa, GBM, Mulenga, Masebo, Scot, extra, they risk looking like their old self—a regional Party—and the TRIBAL TAG on them will have legitimacy. And they can kiss the improved numbers of votes they got in places like CB, NP, etc,…

    • @Peter: Trust me, you don’t need a label. Just take a sip, wait for a few hours (in some cases Minutes) and your BOWELS will TESTIFY!

  10. It is this kind of insensitive and silly comments that cause jihadist groups like ISIS! Now I understand why some moslems will not stop fighting the US. Elizabeth, stretch these insensitive and silly comments any further and you will start ridicalizing Zambians. This election has offended many of us and that’s all you have to say? How silly!

    • UNFORTUNATELY, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY ELECTION IN WHICH UPND HAS NEVER BEEN OFFENDED, SO THIS IS NOT NEW. EVEN IN THE NEXT ELECTIONS, THAT IS IF EVER YOU WILL STILL BE EXISTING, YOU WILL BE OFFENDED. MOVE ON MAN. LUNGU WON THEREFORE, GIVE HIM ROOM AND CHANCE TO DEVELOP ZAMBIA MORE.

  11. Lusaka Times is being pro PF. There is no where where Elizabeth has said the candidates must respect the stupid results from ECZ! Lusaka Times, as usual, is being partisan! But we will not be misled. ECZ and PF have committed serious electoral fraud in this election that they should account for!

  12. The headline is mischievous and very misleading. Elizabeth did not call on candidates to respect the ECZ results. These results cannot be respected by any person of integrity. These results are not even official, some of them where not verified! Chulu and his team of old men who lack integrity were lying through their teeth to the nation without shame! What happened to men and women of integrity of this country?

  13. Its a shame where even a Newspaper Editor could come up with such a distorted extrapolation!!!! I doubt if their education is beyond the elementary grades. There is NO WHERE IN THAT SPEACH to state US recognise the results. To the contrary, she encouraged all disputes are to be channel through the appropriate legal system. Zambia needs a total clean up. Its for the same reason that Even a supposedly non political govt organisation like ECZ will collude with a political party and cook numbers in favour of a certain candidate. Shame on them!!!! We do not want to be like Zimbabwe or Uganda.

  16. The USA are happy with stolen votes to Changwa because they want the IMF to benefit from Zambia’s debt. Double standards by the USA. is it because no white blood was shed in Zambia that you can’t condemn Lungu. What Lungu has done is the same as what Mugabe did. Why not wait until the legal challenge is done before issuing your statement? When did USA election have foreigners come and manipulate election results like has been done in Zambia? Shame on you Elizabeth

  17. @K Bweupe, those of us who have been here longer know that LT has been a pro PF for a long time especially during Sata’s elections. But they’re moderate PF sympathisers and do not delete any negative comments against the PF like they did during 2011. On the other hand, PF cadres like #Saulosi and the young #Senior Citizen do not see anything sensible outside PF, even when PF sheds blood or goes to ransack UPND offices.

  18. UNDP ,HH, GBM and the rest should just listen and let go. If UNDP had garnered more MP s than PF their grievances would be tolerated. But no they were beaten at parliamentary elections. Does HH want to be a PRESIDENT of a majority PF parliament? or is that the PEOPLE THAT VOTED PF PARLIAMENTARINS VOTED FOR HH PRESIDENT. It cant be true. if Zambians are daring real protests let them try it. Those isolated protests in Choma or so ( equating to 1% of frustrated Zambians) will be swallowed up in a second and the world will be reeling in shock of what happened. DO NOT TAKE PF CADRES SILENCE FOR WEAKNESS. They are just listening and been restrained by their Leadership. Which in itself id good leadership. The one Zambia One Nation being preached by ECL is probably needed now than any…
