Former Kafue Member of Parliament Obvious Mwaliteta is one of the four UPND officials who have been arrested for intercepting records of election results, a day before President Edgar Lungu was declared winner of Thursday’s elections.
The five has since been charged with Aggravated Robbery while others are still on the run.
Police Inspector General Kakoma Kanganja disclosed that the incident occurred on Sunday 14th August, 2016 between 10:00 hours and 13:00 hours along Haille Selaise road near City Airport in Lusaka.
“Facts of the matter are that on the material day, three Returning Officers who were coming from the Copperbelt aboard a Zambia Air Force plane, after arriving at Lusaka City Airport, were intercepted as they were proceeding to the Electoral Commission of Zambia Headquarters to deliver materials that included records of proceedings (Form 18) and announcement of poll results (Gen 12),” Mr Kanganja said.
“Upon arrival at City Airport, they were picked up by a Toyota Land cruiser vehicle belonging to the Electoral Commission of Zambia. After driving for about fifty meters from City Airport gate, a Toyota Hiace mini bus blocked them from the front whilst another vehicle, a Toyota Mark II blocked them from behind.”
He said about fifteen men came out from the mini bus and pepper sprayed the ECZ officials in their faces and later assaulted them.
Mr Kanganja said the assailants got away with the Electoral Commission of Zambia materials including the victims’ personal belongings, that is, a hand bag containing various documents and K 350 cash and a Blackberry phone valued at K4,000 and sped off, abandoning the Toyota Mark II at the scene and that in the process, they dropped an Alcatel phone and a number plate ABZ 1919.
He said both the abandoned motor vehicle and a phone have been identified to be for a named UPND official who is on the run.
“Five people have since been arrested in connection with two counts of Aggravated Robbery Contrary to section 294 and 22 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia have appeared in Court today, Friday 19th August, 2016. They have been identified as Obvious Summerton Mwaliteta aged 46, Evans Mukobela aged 44, Macmillan Shimukonka aged 33, Laswell Phiri aged 42 and Emmanuel Mumbi aged 46. A manhunt for the others who are on the run has continued,” he said.
And the Police Chief said the motor vehicle which was used to drop the three Electoral Commission officials at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport in Ndola was also attacked by some UPND cadres on the Copperbelt and went away with photocopies of records of proceedings (Form 18) and announcement of poll results (Gen 12).
He said the assailants were arrested and charged with Aggravated Robbery and they have since appeared in Court.
They are sweeping the whole thing under the carpet.
You can isolate the arrests to suit the Government.
What of the allegations UPND made – what sort of inroads have the police made.

Please fellow Zambians, help me understand this whole issue which i don’t seem to. Am completely lost or maybe am dreaming. How can Mwaliteta be found in two place at the same time? On one hand, he (Mwaliteta) is reported to be implicated in aggrevated robbery and assault case involving 3 ECZ officials at City Airport and on the other hand, on the same material day, various online madia reported him to have assaulted one ECZ driver in Ndola ( See story below). How possible is that? Well, i may not be God who see all activities under the sun and i will just pray to Him to bring out the truth. Hope others can join me in prayers for our country.

UPND was crying rigging from day one of announcement of election date! It is now becoming clear that their actions of frustrating the ECZ and crying loudly accusing PF and ECZ of planning to rig elections were all aimed at diverting attention from their evil schemes! They are actually the perpetrators of election malpractices especially in areas where they won! If victory was stolen from HH in Lusaka, there would have been no peace by now but the fact that Lusaka and CB are quiet is a clear indication that the majority are happy with the outcome!

Opposition UPND officials and cadres are beginning to take their frustrations of a prospective defeat in the general election on ECZ officials.
Former Kafue MP Obvious Mwaliteta led a battalion of UPND cadres to attack an ECZ driver carrying ballots after suspecting the official was diverting the consignment.
This was at the same time UPND party leader Hakainde Hichilema was harassing ECZ officials at Mulungushi where the totalling is being done.
In Ndola, UPND cadres beat up Roy Kuseka, the public relations officer for Ndola after they spotted him heading to the airport on a mission that is unspecified. Kuseka was one of the officials conducting elections at the Ndola Civic…

The pattern has been set. These guys think they can stop any vehicle and inspect it! A vehicle belonging to an official organ mandated by government to carry out elections cannot be stopped by any party cadres. Government had been forced to exercise restraint fearing an excuse to destroy the elections by these failures but this cannot continue. These guys may begin to think they are above the law. If they commit a crime they must be arrested and taken to court. Even the man who incited the youth of Zambia to riot must be charged too. We need to bring sanity to the process of elections.
THIS IS A BLUE LIE. PF WANT TO COOK THE GEN 12 AND THROW IT ON UPND TO DIFFRACT THE ECZ FAILURE AND SIDING WITH LUNGU.

There are only two possible outcomes from the court, and two preductable reactions from UPND :
1) If they lose the petition UPND will insult the judges together wuth PF and ECL.
2) if they win the petition the UPND will praise judges and the legal system.
This is how UPND operates. They told the nation that if the win the elections then the elections will be said to be free and fair, but if, under the same environment, they lose then the ecz is corrupt.
Eve now UPND will tell you that ecz was very professional in southern, western and north-westen, but according to UPND, ecz was corrupt in luapula, northern, eastern, muchinga, Lusaka and copperbelt.
So, it is very easy to follow UPND’s thinking
Are these not the forms and documents that UPND petion claims were missing? So UPND stole in order to support their petition?
On the other handsbUPND did all in their power to disrupt the elections, stopping ECZ trucks and searchingbthem and possibly stealing some forms and other material. Have you noticed that the petion talks about missing form 12 etc? Time was tight for ECZ so if UPND disrupted the preparations by randelayng trucks , how can the same people cry to ConCourt that the elections were not properly conducted? Now look at Mwaliteta and company, they send them to steal electoral materials and then turn around and allege missing forms?
Sorry UPND such desperation never won any party an election. Sore losers shall always lose. Magnanimous losers God grants another opportunity.

The ECZ are very well organized. This petition by HH and UPND will be completely discredited in the Constitution Court and HH will look like a complete id.iot. I am a voter myself and I saw for myself just how difficult it is to rig an election in this country. All the polling agents were there at my polling station, including the UPND guys. So how and when did the rigging take place? Rigging may only have been possible in Southern province where an uncle of mine, a businessman in Maamba, told me that UPND goons were busy campaigning and threatening people even on the queues. If some of this information comes out in the Constititional Court next week, UPND will be in trouble.
