Dr Banda Congratulates GBM
Dr Banda Congratulates GBM

It is criminal for anybody to call for an illegal revolution as a way of protesting the outcome of the general elections, United Party for National Development (UPND) vice president for politics Canisius Banda has charged.

And Dr Banda has differed with the UPND vice president for administration Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) on whether the party should go for a convention or not following its loss in the just ended August general elections.

On Monday during a press conference held at Chainama Hotel, Mr Mwamba said there would be no need for a convention because Mr Hakainde Hichilema was still in charge of the UPND as president and Mr Mwamba also called for a revolution to protest the outcome of the general elections.

But in an exclusive interview with the Daily Nation yesterday, Dr Banda said GBM had no authority to issue such a statement.

He also said that it was criminal for anybody to call for an illegal revolution as a way of protesting the outcome of the general elections, adding that a legal revolution should be done through the ballot as it happened in 1991 when Zambians revolted against the United National Independence Party (UNIP) governance.

“So you might have heard the other day we had a press conference, then Geoffrey Mwamba said there will no convention and things like that.

“That is ultra-vires, vice president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has no authority to issue such a statement,” Dr Banda said.
Dr Banda said such a statement could only come out of the meeting of the National Executive Committee or National Management Committee and not an individual.

Dr Banda said to make such a statement was ‘‘grossly premature’’, especially now when the UPND was still battling with keeping its members consoled.
He also said Mr Mwamba’s statement on the convention was highly ‘‘suspicious’’.

He said UPND members were currently hurt, disturbed and seeking direction.

Dr Banda said utterances made by Mr Mwamba would not help the UPND in anyway, adding that it was important that he (GBM) was careful when making statements.

Dr Banda said the party was owned by the citizens and that it had its organs which would hold its meetings.

He said it was at such meetings when the party should decide on what it does next.

Dr Banda said the meeting must be held to decide the way forward of the UPND and that only the secretary general had the powers to call for such meetings.

He however said there would be National Executive Committee and National Management Committee meetings to discuss what the UPND should do next following the election loss last month.

Dr Banda said it was only after holding such meetings that a decision on whether the party should go for a convention or not would be decided, and not Mr Mwamba.

He said the people must be consulted because they were the ones who put Mr Hichilema as a leader and he (HH) derived his powers from the general membership, hence the need to consult them on the way forward for the party.

  1. Irrespective of the issue at hand, attacking a senior colleague in public or through the media is quite immature. Canisius is a good guy who however must study politics a bit more. Opportunism bears short rewards.

    • If UPND has to survive as a party, it needs to behave differently from now. It needs to set the trend. GBM is bringing ideas from PF of wamuyaya. If it is true that what he said was from his head and not party policy, then he needs to be called out. He was behaving like azungu anikonde. It is true his statement was very suspicious. Why talk about the things that have not been discussed by the Party’s Executive Committee? UPND will need to change alot of things, one of which is this 2 vice president issue. With the running mate clause now in place, you cannot continue with this redundancy of positions. So I am afraid, I do not agree with your analysis Neon. GBM has to be called out with his lies!

    • Canisius speaks more of a leader than most of the UPND top leaders.

GBM knows that he was put there by HH, and the removal of HH removes his anchor too.

Now, Canisius has nothing to lose. He feels free to deal with issues the way they should be dealt with.

Mwamba is more likely to contribute to the fall of UPND just as much as Canisius is more likely to contribute to the reorganization of the UPND.

HH’s future prospects can not match his prospects in the recent past. His conduct especially in the just ended elections has lowered the bar.

    • I dont blame Dr Banda for speaking out publicly. He has been attacked recently through Zambiawatchdog. I think he realises that his life span in UPND is under serious threat and if he doesn’t raise his voice, he will be pushed out. I agree with @Comedian that GBM is bringing the PF wamuyaya mentality to UPND and that should not be the case. HH has lost 5 elections, surely, people need to discuss this and see whether he is the best person to take the party through the 2021 elections. Even he himself, HH, should be reflecting on this and make a decision that is the best for the party.

    • @Neon: And were did Mwamba make his remarks? Was it in a PRIVATE meeting with UPND senior members or at a Press briefing at Chainama hotel in public? So why should it be tantamount to ‘sacrilegious’ for C. Banda to state his position through the media?

To me the Doc (C. Banda) seems to be the only stable and sober person left in UPND nowadays. What happened to all the self-proclaimed intellectuals and adults in this Party kanshi?

Nomba mwatampa ukulwa already, ka. Very soon things like “imwe ba fi-color” will start pouring out of certain people we know to be experts at vulgarities.

    • Ba Neon think again there is no opportunism here. Just because he is not Tonga and you think he wants presidency – NO. He is just being fair and honest. You lost the polls because of one man GBM who people dreads so much. Now hear him talk of revolution – what revolution is he talking about? And you are in support!!! Anyway go ahead with your revolution and that will be the end of UPND because we shall consider the party as a rebel party and have all its leaders jailed and starved to death. Including you makaka!

    • Before commenting on any issue i first look for the source and in this case the source of this story by LT is Daily Nation. Can anything good come from Daily Nation (PF’S media) on UPND issues? The motive behind Daily Nation reporting on UPND matters is not in good faith (evil). I wouldn’t be surprised to see Canisius refusing saying such things as reported by Daily Nation. Whatever the case attacking your fellow senior party official in the media send a wrong signal to the followers and its such behavior that brings division in the party because GBM has his followers within the party just like Canisius. Now if these 2 starts fighting what happens to their supporters? they also follow suit. Stop washing your dirty linen in public

    • Canicius Banda should avoid the toxic Daily Nation as one would avoid a hangman with a noose. Richard Sakala will only feature you because he sees an opportunity of stringing you and revealing tensions, real or imagined, in UPND. Sakala Nyongo is not your friend.

  2. #2 Neon, thanks for your observation.
As for immaturity I think that your advice should be more useful if it was extended to HH.
As for attacking fellow leaders in.public, I think that you should advise GBM to learn his manners.
In general, I think that UPND is an indisciplined party where anybody can say anything. Just look at the statements by HH himself, most of them he should issue after consulting his Executive comittee. The call for revolution for example, one expects that to come from HH after consulting the NMC. But then,.anything goes in UPND, you even have GBM as running [email protected]

    • Holding of a convention by UPND is ineluctable. How HH handles this issue is cardinal for UPND and Zambia’s democracy going forward.

Should HH drop UPND like a hot potato….then it will go into oblivion. His stranglehold too, however, will stifle the free flow of ideas that should nourish it on its journey to its destiny.

      It’s a tough call.

  3. “He however said there would be National Executive Committee and National Management Committee meetings to discuss what the UPND should do next following the election loss last month.”

Is Canisius the only one in UPND who has accepted that the party actually lost the presidential elections? I thought he would say … following the election THEFT last month.

    • @Nsimbi: Canisius Banda is real and mature enough to act like an adult, and NOT A CRY BABY! Whether UPND or HH/GBM accepts it or not, nothing is going to change. These elections done and in the archives already. So why not just act like rational people and move forward. This is what Doc Banda is saying and encouraging is colleagues to accept. Wasting more precious time on NOTHINGS when they can be reorganizing and strategizing for 2021 is what M.C. Sata referred to as UNDER-FIVE politics.

    • I don’t think that he is ready to retire. I have just observed that he manufactured the slogan that he won the elections and were just stolen from him to buy himself more time. He will convince his followers that he more time because he didn’t lose. But who cares. Let UPND keep him because they feel he is the party and the party is him.

  5. Obviously there’s conflict between CB and GBM. From CB’s statement he considers himself more credible than GBM. One wonders what HH thinks. The fact, however, is that HH has carried UPND for years. If he decides to go, CB will also run. Democracy allows debate. However, it should be informed debate guided by the constitution. Our problem in Zed is that personal interest overrides national interest. The UPND will need to re-examine and reorganise itself deeply and honestly, before considering the way forward. There should be no sacred cows, if it has to win.

  7. @1.2 Peace for Zambia, very apt analysis. And like I said, it seems anything goes in UPND. Maybe the running mate has been given more power than the National Management Committee?
And where are the party spokespersons Stephen Latuka and Charles Kakoma kanshi? We miss their comedy. Everytime they opened their mouths, they reminded me of that Saddam Hussein spokesperson “Comical Ali” who always saw victory for his boss even when we were seeing the exact opposite on the ground. • Those who assumed their was leadership in HH will think twice.

      1) As a democratic leader you do not risk the lives of people by inciting them to rise up.

      2) As a leader you do not fall too much for emotions to the extent that you begin to insult all institutions including presidency, judiciary, electoral commission, the police, the military and everybody becomes a thug.

That is not leadership, because in leadership there are more serious challenges than losing an election. How do you handle them – insult? Call everybody a criminal?

Come on HH! as a leader, people expect better than that from you.

Are you a person that, on account of emotions, can easily set our country on fire?
Or are you one who can control his tempers.

  12. And Mr HH, after Zambians including UPND cadres have snubbed your call for a rebellion, where does that leave you? Do you think that you still have a majority following in UPND? Unfortunately only a convention can confirm that for HH. As it is you have no mandate to speak for the membership of UPND.

HH and GBM must be disappointed that no-one is taking to the streets for satify their egos.

  13. Uncle Bob across the river was once miffed when our own Levy likened his beloved Zim to ‘A sinking titanic’. We all know Robert’s in-depth knowledge of politics embellished in his rich vocabulary evokes fearlessness to answer back to anyone, anywhere at anytime. And most of us expected no less from him. Surprise, surprise, ” I cannot criticise my fellow African leader in public. I would wait for side meetings at Summits and General Assemblies to air my views’. Uncle Bob responded. He may be a dictator to his people but that’s how sober a leader behaves in public. A leaf for Canisius to pick.

    0

    0
    • That leaf from Mugabe is much more needed by HH, GBM and Nevers than Canisius needs it.

      Was Mwanawasa in Zanu-PF? NO.
Was Mwanawasa a leader in Zimbabwe? NO.

So, HH, GBM and Nevers must learn that you do not insult or speak ill of other leaders, whether in the same party or not.

HH, GBM and Nevers have always insulted ECL with all kinds of insults but I have never heard insults from ECL to any of these these.
If anyone has, please cite for me.

That is the difference between a leader and those that need to be lead.

Good point and observation! The fact that Canisius Banda can be associated with the Daily Nation which sponsored by Edgar Lungu is clear testimony that Canisius Banda is doing wako ni wako and a member of umodzi kumawa. Another fact is that Canisius never really campaigned in the previous election and his heart is with his “friends” from the East of Zambia.
So even if a convention is called, and if HH doesn’t want to continue, the Party would want continuity and obvious successor would be GBM not Canisius. UPND cannot sink so low to chose someone dinning and wining with likes of Richard Sakala – never!!!

    • Hatred that UPND members have on Bembas is also being visited upon on Easterners. Dont forget that the population of Eastern province is almost identical to the population of Southern province. Which means that if UPND carry on insulting easterners and treating them in the manner that HH treated Canisius Banda, it will be harder still for the party to win the presidency as the two regions will cancel each other out if Easterners vote for UPND’s rival party.

You read it as such? You may have a point. While I am one of the critics of tribalism in Zambia, I don’t see tribalism here. I see pain. A Southerner lost to an Easterner, not in a clean election, but in one highly suspected to have been rigged by the Easterner. Why can’t you share their pain? Are you human or just another creature?

  21. Fun how the calls for HH to resign and leave the UPND and the calls for a convention are mainly coming from the PF cadres and not the UPND cadres. But why is that?

Let’s not pretend, UPND will struggle as a formidable opposition political party if HH left it today. The party has been moulded as a one man show for a long time. The man has invested heavily in the party, bankrolling it using his political fortunes. MMD was the only party that never relied on one person for its existence but even then where it now? PF was also a Sata personal property and it survived after his death because they were in power and controlled all the state machinery and resources. But it too almost collapsed following a
at which Lungu bulldozed his way to the presidency.

So these calls for HH to leave are not genuine… they are meant to weaken the party. HH needs to mentor someone who he will gracefully hand over power to, and not through rushed emotions.

But this is a lesson to Zambian politics that you never create and run these political parties like personal businesses where one person calls all the shorts. Take a leaf from political parties in the West where leaders come and go but the parties survive. In fact sometimes like in the US the leaders of the party are not even the ones running for office. They just sponsor the candidates.

This is important in order for HH to frame up campaign messages that in touch with the majority voters and also to tell whether the reports that HH was getting about his popularity and certain victory were genuine or not. HH and everybody took Sata’s advice as a joke and now HH has paid a heavy price. That was part of the rationale used in selecting a successor for Mazoka. It hasn’t worked. Michael Sata may not have had as much money. He managed to win an election, though without the blessing of a personal wallet. More than money, UPND should concentrate on finding a natural politician. They have not been fair on Hakainde. He has had the money, their main attraction to him. However, he lacks a natural flare for politics. His political career has been a slow process of learning to dance Simbayoka while already on the performance stage. It hasn’t been easy. I admire him. Most other people would long have given-up. This confirms the rumour that Dr Banda is going to be appointed PS for Ministry of Health by the forged President Lungu. Politics of the Belly has taken over principles. Goodbye Dr Canisius Banda.

  35. Parking Lot Scam
I would like to draw attention to what is going on in some parts of Lusaka in relation to the behavior of the so called Parking attendants. I think its about time motorists are alerted to some scam that is going round especially with the parking lots at Barclays Northend Branch and ZRA head office.
There is a team of about 3 to 4 suspicious looking individuals who are in the habit of clamping vehicles considered improperly parked. The council needs to come up a better ID for us to be able to know who is a legitimate parking attendants or not. Law abiding tax payers are being swindled on their hard earned cash by these dimwits. This group of characters are in the habit of clamping vehicles with a very defective spiky device whenever someone parks their car temporary…

to draw some cash from the ATMs at BBZ or to attend to some tax issues at ZRA.
This bunch of *****s mascarading as council employees are always hiding in the trees opposite the bank along the middle walk way. When one comes back to the car, they find these crooks surrounding the car whilst having placed their ugly looking spiky device under the front wheel of the drivers side. We cant allow this to go on because in the first place, there should a sign of NO PARKING ALLOWED and even these *****s should be there to direct the motorists not to park their car on that spot if at all its not allowed.
The reason I believe this bunch of fools are not genuine is that I challenged them to show me their IDs and also for us to resolve the issue at their office when they clamped my…

my car. They gave me a 100 reasons such as the office is far, no one will remain manning the spot, they are not allowed to get in customers car when I suggested we use my car to go tho their office, I could a serial killer and so on and so forth. When we argued for some time over the payment, a stranger came in to be an intermediary and suggested, I give them a little so that its a win win situation. This never really bothered me that time because giving them a K5 instead of a K50 seemed fair on my part and I was running out of time on a very hot day. So gave them something for water. Only after sometime did I think through and realized that these are a scam and not genuine Lusaka City Council employees. I see them almost on a daily basis harassing people on the same spot…

and I think this has to come to a stop.
The council should put out an advert to state clearly whether that bunch of *****s are the only crew allowed to work on those spots in front of ZRA and BBZ. They council should also clearly put some signs to help motorists park their cars in the right spots. I am talking about motorist who might not be familiar with Lusaka.
The the council just go into some kind of collaboration with RTSA for collection of some of these fees as I suspect about 95% of these are just scams. These guys can issue tickets that one can pay for online or at the council using a cashier as opposed to give money to any Jim and Jack that just goes directly in their pockets.

  43. UPND is a tragic story of a tribal party that was never meant or intended to be, but which became one after the demise of its founder. Since then, the party has vehemently fought to shake-off the debilitating stigma. Should HH decide to retire from politics, it’s when it will become clear if indeed UPND is ready for the amputation.

Dear Meimankundyu, just look for your next client you can provide with a nice room service for your daily struggles to make a living and leave HH alone.
It is a pity that in a democracy, even known who.res like Meimankundyu are entitled to their opinion and to be heard even when their shi.t would be better kept under wraps right in that smelly unwashed pu.ssey – Old Ar.sewhore!!

  49. THE UPND CONSTITUTION DOES NOT PRESCRIBE A LIMIT FOR PARTY PRESIDENCY
article 79 of the United Party for National Development constitution is unambiguous and explicit over the term of Office of President.
The article reads; “The party president shall be eligible for election for an indefinite period subject to this (UPND) constitution provided that a party president who is elected republican president shall only serve two terms that shall run concurrently with the term of office as republican president.” The only question is “Do we really need this man again(1), again(2), again (3), again (4) again (5) and AGAIN?” Without condemning the man, would we be helping matters by hero-worshipping him, or look at our own weak Constitution, for the sake of democracy? Remember the Lawyers we…
