UPND President Hakainde Hichilema and Vice President Geoffrey Mwamba have been arrested by police in Luanshya.
The two have been arrested on grounds that they blocked roads when they visited UPND members incarcerated at Kamfinsa prison last week.
They were summoned by Luanshya Police for interrogation after Mpongwe District Commissioner Keith Maila made a formal complaint to police that Mr Hichilema and Mr Mwamba were holding a meeting in Mpongwe without a permit.
This is after the two leaders were denied entry into Kamfinsa prison last week where they had gone to visit some incarcerated UPND officials.
And there was some confusion in Luanshya this afternoon after some PF cadres invaded Luanshya Police station where Mr Hichilema and Mr Mwamba are being questioned.
The PF cadres attacked some UPND members who were gathered at the police station to offer solidarity to their leaders and told the UPND cadres to leave Luanshya stating that Copperbelt is not southern province.
It’s not necessary. These acts just scare away investors. Fact is, HH and GBM are not a threat to PF’s political discourse. Lungu is guaranteed a full five-year mandate

So why is Lungu arresting opposition members if they are not a threat to him? Lungu was not ready to give up the presidency after 1 year of being in office. HH and GBM should not think that they are “TOO BIG” or IMMUNED from being arrested and thrown in prison. They have been very notable people, even BIGGER than the two put together, who have been put in prison before without Zambia DISINTEGRATING, or OSTRACIZED by the international community. People have gone back to their normal lives, both PF and UPND. Even if you allow these two to rant all they can, no one will take to the street to protest the Lungu presidency or cause upheaval. So it’s up to the Police and govt not to fall in the trap set by these two. At the end of the day, when the economy fails to perform due to uncertainties, the blame will be put on the govt, not UPND. We want to move on, we want the economy to improve. These unnecessary arrests just are not aiding our economy in any way. So the PF govt should just ignore dissenting views from these two

People will finally get fed up with these guys and they will clobbered badly and the Police will just say “we didn’t know they were in the area we could have protected them had they asked for a permit”.
@Nzelu, the Bill of Rights was not shut down. The referendum was meant to usher in additions to the Bill of Rights. It is a very dangerous precedent to imagine that just because a referendum did not work out then what was supposed to be replaced has been suspended or erased.
