Patriotic Front Member of the Central Committee Paul Moonga has proposed the extension of the tenure of office for elected officials from the current five to seven years.
Mr Moonga has told a media briefing held at the PF Secretariat today that the five-year tenure is insufficient for a President to implement most of his policies.
He adds that holding elections every five years has a negative impact on the economy.
Mr. Moonga who said he was speaking in his individual capacity explained that the danger of the current 5-year term is that Members of Parliament fail to perform because of the prospect of holding another election.
He says his proposal is for the benefit of the nation and not President Edgar Lungu or the Patriotic Front.
Meanwhile Mr. Moonga says UPND President Hakainde Hichilema should swallow his pride and accept that he lost the presidential election than causing unnecessary tension in the country.
He says it is wishful thinking for Mr. Hichilema to claim that he won the elections when he only won in his strongholds.
Mr. Moonga adds that Mr Hichilema has failed to run the party and that it is time senior UPND leaders retired him.
But these Tongas also, Moonga??? Moonga is fighting his fellow tribe’s mate, HH and pushing for ECL’s extension tenure of office to 7years. These tongas also???
Not healthy enough to make it 7 years, may not even make it half of current term.

The problems Tongas who are in PF have is that they have to justify their existence by being overzealous, over-the-top stoopid. Otherwise Bembas are asking themselves every day why there are Tongas in their Central Committee when PF has zero support among Tongas. Look at the many ridiculous utterances that Edify (what a name!) Hamukale has had to make in mere weeks of becoming a Provincial Minister, as if he is the sole Provincial Minister in Zambia. This is the same trap Moonga finds himself in. I am sure Bembas hate this idea because they want to take over from Lungu as soon as possible, not after 14 years.
But Lungu already wasted 2 years. Why give him another 2?
Lets have our ruling party learn to walk before they can run. Its only been a few months and we the general public have been subjected to Increased fuel prices, Increased electricity tarrifs and now increased load shedding times.
We are suffering because of loans we had no control over. Further more, the campaign promises are yet to be brought to light.

There is no guarantee that seven years is sufficient time to finish programs. So what happens when a project is started in the seventh year? And what happens if the LORD shortens an incumbent’s term? People are becoming greedy and wanting to extend their stay in office.

If Lungu is worthy leader let him lead us out of the economic mess Sata left us in just like LPM did with Chiluba’s mess. He shud not only exploit +ve PF accolades on the now ceased Roads infrastructure but shud also take responsibilities for Sata’s mess. If he performs in 5yrs he can get 2nd 5yrs if he qualifies & he wud rule for 11.5yrs.

Here is a better idea: Zambians must be allowed to have a recall vote if after 2 years, any elected official cannot deliver on electoral promises. That should be same for President, MPs, Mayor and Councillors. This is essentially a vote of no confidence. We should be planning a recall vote against Lungu for a 40% fuel increase, 8 hour powercuts evety day, a collapsed court system, brutal police who are now happily killing and battering each other, and more to come. Five years of Lungu looks like an eternity!
Lungu will rule for at least 20 years.
That unexplained $2.3 million that appeared in his account after 1 year was not enough.
To the contrary, the term of office of a Zambian president should have been curtailed to 3 years and 7 months and an additional 5 months to hand over to the nest guy. For so called honorable members of parliament the term should be 2 years and six months limited to 2 terms maximum.
I will explain the scientific rationale behind these proposed changes if you want mature and exegetic and level-headed statistical data. Of truth, politicians are like baby napkins; they need regular changes.
Thought as much @ Warlord though 5 months to hand over is too much, 30 days is enough! What should also happen is allowance that provides for the president elect in the election year to take charge of the budget! In Zambia elections are in August and the fiscal year begins 1st January, thus the president elect has to take charge of the budget which I think should be presented in November to start implementing his vision running with his/her team of office bearers! Considering ministers get appointed from outside parliament as the 30 months term would only make the parliamentarians effectively responsive to demands of constituencies they represent to see to it that what the constituents were promised is being met!
He should keep his opinion to himself…and LT should not give people with such retrogressive ideas a platform. Moonga should be reminded of FTJs failed 3rd term bid. Please don’t drive us down that path!!
The Central Committee member is only the carrier of his master’s message and intentions. The ground work for that has already been laid by the Humble great leader himself. It began with the appointment on those Concourt judges, then closure of the Post and Watchdog (to make sure people are starved of alternative news sources), then he created the religion ministry to amplify “the anointed one” message, this despite the church objecting to the ministry. Finally he will withdraw the country from the ICC and amend the constitution to allow himself to continue in office.
Better one seven year term for president & MPs also.Recycling politicians is NOT democracy,it is “chewingcracy”, at the expence of the masses.Also their MUST not be a salary increment during the tenure.

How can we have MPs voting for their own salary increases? We should put it in the Constitution that any vote for increases can only take effect in the NEXT sitting of Parliament!

Note that the two mentioned presidents have terms above 5 years but that has not improved the living standards of their people, Instead, it has only made them among the richest presidents in Africa. 20 years ago someone started this tale of how one great leader (maybe meaning his long fingers) needed another term to accomplish his vision. & the GL after over a year of silence appeared just to tell us in his funny accent to let the people debate. By 2001 our burgeoning democracy was so mortally damaged that its never recovered. History is repeating itself.

Thank God the Vice President Inonge Wina has dismissed what Mr Moonga was proposing when Mr Jack Mwiimbu asked the Vice President in Parliament this morning who said it was his own view which never represented the Government and that Mr Moonga had no authority to make a representation on behalf of the PF and everyone in parliament wondered afterwards what kind of weed the Green party had supplied to Mr Moonga…This is what we expect UPND including the Supreme Leader HH himself to offer constructive checks and balances to the Government like what Mr Jack Mwiimbu is doing…
