The opposition UPND has charged that statements by State House targeted at the judiciary conforms that the PF leadership has been intimidating and controlling the Judiciary.

UPND Secretary General Stephen Katuka said in a statement that the PF leadership has been intimidating and controlling the judiciary in order to keep the rulings in their favour.

“It is not long ago that many Zambians wondered on the behaviour of some members of the Constitutional Court, who were clearly very partisan in the manner they handled the presidential petition,” Mr Katuka said.

“A number of learned scholars and professional institutions clearly pointed out that there was an invisible hand controlling the judiciary, which ideally, should be very independent as an arm of Government,” he said.

He added, “From what Edgar Lungu’s Spokesperson, Amos Chanda, said last night, it now confirms how the PF leadership has been intimidating and controlling the judiciary in order to keep the rulings in their favour.”

“And therein lies the problem in a country where citizens have completely lost confidence in many institutions of governance such as the Police, the Judiciary, the Electoral Commission of Zambia, and others, going by Lungu’s threats on the judiciary through Amos Chanda.”

Mr Katuka said the UPND hopes that President Lungu knows the consequences of such careless utterances as exhibited by Amos Chanda last night.

“When citizens lose confidence in institutions that should act as neutral referees, but are now being directed to be PF players as well,” he said.

“As UPND, we have lost a parliamentary petition as well as many other cases in a very questionable manner, but now we know who has been threatening judiciary officers behind the scenes, as demonstrated by the dictatorial tendencies exhibited by Lungu through Amos Chanda last night who abused the ZNBC national television platform,” Mr Katuka said.

“We have now been vindicated when we say Lungu has no respect for the Constitution, rule of law and institutions of governance as was seen when he refused to handle over power to the Speaker of National Assembly when the petition was lodged as provided by the constitution which they signed themselves.”

Mr Katuka revealed that the legal team will study the matters in view of the fact that there are still a number of ongoing court processes against President Lungu’s disputed presidential outcome, which he says they now believe they want to sway to the PFs favour.

  1. Eeh! These UPND never give up. They’re always at High Court (even in the rain like yesterday).

Apart from them being Tonga, they must be ma lova

    Thanks

    • Its the incompetence of the visionless & violent PF of Lungu with his bandits intimidating the judiciary.
These PF charlatans should be stopped & made to respect the constitution & the courts.
Great works of check & balance UPND, keep it up.

  2. Ba cilila lila. Upnd is always crying. Ci sata*nist cries everyday to get to state house. U can serve zambians outside state house Hendrix Huddersfield. Which zambians do u want to serve? UPND is in 3 provinces and this is on record. Amos has teared upnd apart. UPnd is crying like bast**rds.

  3. Which many Zambians is this bastard refering to? Am one of the Zambians and I have not been wondering the Concourt outcomes so don’t generalise us so that you. can gain political mileage. You were recently claiming to have gained popularity in PF strongholds after judgement went to your favour. Now that its not on your favour you aredemonising the Judiciary. Very selfish party and this Kalutuku or katuta has shown it on the open. Goodluck with your forever whining UPND!!!!

  4. Development is not when UPND cries for sympathy, but something that has taken place, taking place and what has been planned. So UPND stop crying like orphans and think of development the country should do

  5. Now UPND can say Masebo had her case dismissed becoz Edward thru Amos Chanda intimidated the Judges. Amos Chanda and his Boss should leave the Judiciary to run Independently and professionally. Concourt’s image is in tatters becoz Edward bribed the Judges and interfered with their work. The handling of the Petetion has been messed up and the image of Zambia as a beckon of peace and Constitutional Democracy destroyed. Amos and Edward should stop interfering with the work of Judiciary. The High Court should be commended for handling the MP Petetions well so far. Concourt should take a leaf in handling the Presidential Petetions. That Petetion is an oustanding business. It will not go away until it is properly disposed off. The Petetioners must be heard just like the High Court has heard…

  6. In future Party Spokespersons will undergo heavy screening we need a face for the Party were everyone sits up when they come to address the press…2021 Zambia Forward under new leadership

    • Don’t forget the same Mwanawasa intimidated a judge who had passed judgment against government. The judge apologized to Levy and attributed his “wrong ” judgment to a bout of malaria. As for the current situation I won’t comment.

  7. In politics you don’t fold your arms and let your opponent take advantage. Don’t think Upnd wouldn’t have done the same. That would be naive.

  8. upAndOWN is a moronic party led by morons.when they verdict in thier favor judicially is independent otherwise it is being manipulated by the ruling party. This has been its tradition since its inception.Mwanawasa government,Rb not rcognised, come Sata, the moronic party resolved that they were going to make the country ungovernable, what type of leaders are they? One day they will be in govrnment and they reap what they are sowing now!!!Mukanjeba, only morons and fortune seekers like masebo belinda will support.THey will embark on witch hunting instead of development, like what fat John did throughout his reign, study reign soberly and you will agree with me.

  9. Praising someone when he or she is no more is very wrong. when Mwanawasa was there, you never supported him, to day you miss him coz he could have fired Amos Chanda. For what reason have you forgotten that it was the same Mwanawasa who interfered when the judge ruled in favour of Godfrey Miyanda when he was trying to prevent his Mps from accepting the ministerial positions in Mwanawasa gvt. he came in very strongly in condemning the judge such that the judge was even intimidated and changed his decision. he was even made to appologise for taking that position coz according to him, he was sick the time he was making a ruling. that is what we can call interference. Then today u are saying u missing him. To me I understand u miss people who are controlling the system, un like people like…

  10. UPND supporters together with their leaders are behaving like people who never went to school. why should they continue to disrespect the president elect Edgar C. Lungu when they know very well that he won convincingly. this jealous of theirs will not take them anywhere, if anything they are just losing popularity coz of their primitive way of handling important matters like elections. the same people were saying “Sata is a made person who will bring war if given a chance to rule this country.” but the same man lost elections several times, he never behaved the way these thugs do. Instead, he accepted the outcome of the results in all the elections he lost untill his time came and he won. this is the kind of leadership people of Zambia are looking for.
