Defilers jailed to 30, 35 years in Chipata

THE Chipata High Court has jailed six men to 30 and 35 years
imprisonment with hardlabour for defiling girls below the ages of 16
years.
In the first case, before High Court Judge Maria Kawimbe was Innocent
Moono 31, a businessman of Ibex Township in Katete who allegedly
defiled a girl this year.
Passing ruling, Ms Justice Kawimbe sentenced Moono to 35 years
imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date he was
arrested.
Ms Justice Kawimbe also slapped Nicholas Zulu 23, of Petauke’s
Showgrounds to 35 years imprisonment with hardlabour for similar
offence.
And Chakala Nkhowani 39, a traditional doctor of Mphole village in
Chief Kawaza’s area in Sinda district  was sentenced to 30 years
imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 15 year old girl.
Particulars of the offence were that the convict on August 21, 2015
went to dig medicine with the girl in the bush and whilst
in the bush, the doctor abandoned whatever he was looking for and
started having unlawful carnal knowledge with the girl.

When the girl returned to the village, narrated what had transpired in
the bush which led to the arrest of the traditional doctor.

He was thereafter charged with an offence of defilement contrary to
section 138(1) Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Ms Justice further jailed Lemekani Miti 25, of Siavuma village in
Chief Madzimawe’s area in Chipata district to 30 years imprisonment
with hard labour for defiling two girls aged between five and nine on
unknown dates but in April this year.
The court heard that the defiler defiled the girl one after the other
which led to him to be slapped with two counts of defilement.

The same court jailed Edwin Mwanza 40 , a general worker of Mataya
village in Chief Kalindawalo’s area in Petauke to 30 years
imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 13 years old on January
18, 2013.
Ms Justice Kawimbe also jailed Imikani Banda of Katete to 30 years
imprisonment with hard labour with an offence of defilement.

  1. Something is wrong in Eastern Province, people must not behave like that. But a good sentencing and hope that people will desist from such crimes.
