Senior Chief Shakumbila of the Sala people of Lusaka and Central Provinces has distanced himself from a group of chiefs who recently issued a statement calling for the release of UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.
Senior Chief Shakumbila has told ZNBC News in a telephone interview that he is not a partisan traditional leader but one who is development oriented.
He says he works with the government of the day and he cannot be part of chiefs who engage in politics.
Senior Chief Shakumbila says his name was erroneously added on the list of the Chiefs and he was not even aware of the press briefing as he was away in Zimbabwe at the time.
The traditional leader says he cannot involve himself in the arrest of Mr Hichilema because he has no information on the Mongu incident.
Senior Chief Shakumbila says the matter is a Police case and it should be left to the Police to handle it.
We knew, there was some fake news included in that article. This is the correct and official attitude to take. Chiefs should not engage in confrontational politics with the state.

I believe the chief received a present to deny. What was the so purpose of going to ask the chief if he was against or not? Many people in Zambia even around the globe have condemned the barbaric act of attacking the opposition leader, have you gone to confirm with them. This is not news!

Only a miracle will return Zambia to the nation that lived the “ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION” motto birthed by the founding fathers! Mind you the one, Michael Chilufya Sata, who is the architect of decay leading to the deep divisions and tribal consciousness was not among the nations founding fathers. Best bet is to let each region govern itself according to ethnicity it has worked in Nigeria and South Africa!
interesting comment, and i actually think you have a point there regarding Late Sata’s contribution to current realities. However,i strongly feel that UPND succession fiasco prior to Mr HH ascension to presidency of the party is the REAL reason for the tribal issues currently obtaining.
We can try to gloss over that but even ardent supporters of the UPND know deep down their hearts that this is the real reason.
What next though? How i wish we could analyse issues with the objectivity required but now, every little issue is analysed based on one’s political affiliation.

The courts needs to give the opposition the chance to be heard. What i am not sure about though is whether it is possible to hear a case outside the stipulated period (14 Days). That would be like RETAKING a penalty for a game already played
The public order act must allow opposition members to freely gather at their request. State media should also give independent coverage to the opposition, in order to have a balanced playing field.
