Typhoid breaks out in Shanghai area in Mpika District

Suspected Typhoid has broken out in Shanghai area of Tazara Compound in Mpika district of Muchinga Province with 2 confirmed cases so far.
ZANIS reports that Chilonga Mission General Hospital , Medical Superintendant, Jean Kalengayi  has confirmed the development in an interview, today.
Dr. Kalengayi said the hospital has recorded five suspected typhoid cases all from Shanghai area of Tazara Compound where access to clean and safe water among residents is a challenge.
The Medical Superintendant said that out of the five suspected cases , two cases were confirmed by the laboratory results while the remaining three cases tested negative.
He said that the three negative cases have since been discharged while the confirmed patients are admitted at Chilonga Mission General Hospital.
Dr. Kalengayi said that the condition of the two patients has since stabilised.
Meanwhile, Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe who visited the typhoid patients at the mission hospital said that a temporal measure shall be put in place to avoid the water bone disease from spreading in the area.
Mr. Nundwe has directed the District Health Office to chlorinate all the water wells in Shanghai while Government through Chambeshi Water and Sewarage Company has plans to sink three boreholes in Shanghai area.
Speaking on behalf of residents Matildah Wapamesa said that the plan by Government to sink boreholes in the area will be of great help to the resident as it will help prevent out breaks of water bone diseases.
