Zesco eye to stay top away at unknown Obied

Share

Zesco United hope to maintain their top two place in 2017 CAF Confederation Cup Group C when they play bottom placed Al Hilal Obied in Sudan this evening.

The match will see Zesco hunt for their first away win in continental action in 13 months.

Zesco’s last away win came in April, 2016 in the CAF Champions League pre group stage when they beat Stade Malien Mali 3-1 away in Bamako en route to a 5-2 aggregate win that secured the Ndola sides group stage qualification.

But coach Zlatko Krmpotic said he was upbeat about a positive result despite Obied being of unknown quantity for them.

“We have a good chance in Sudan against Al Hilal Obied to get one or three points,”Krmpotic said.

“But I don’t know too much about them but I just know something about Sudanese football from my time at Mazembe when we played El Merreikh and Al Hilal Omdurman.”

The ex-TP Mazembe assistant coach has kept faith in his same 18 member team that beat Smouha of Egypt 1-0 in Ndola on match day one on May 13.

Krmpotic will be hoping striker’s Jesse Were and John Chingandu who have 3 and 2 goals respectively in the competition to try and end that away winless drought.

Zesco also need to pick up the three points with joint leaders CRD Libolo of Angola to come next on June 4 at home in Ndola.

Libolo are also in action on Wednesday when they visit Smouha in Alexandria.

The Angolans began their Group C campaign with a 1-0 home win over Obied on May 14.
