Zambian employers should reflect on the role workers play in generating wealth for their companies

Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Programme Manager Cathy Short has urged Zambians employers to reflect on the important role workers play in contributing to the accumulation of wealth in their companies.

Speaking at the commemoration of World Day for decent work themed “Workers need a pay rise” at Zambia Congress for Trade Unions (ZCTU) headquarters, Ms. Short said employers should recognize needs of their workers who deserve a decent working environment as they are the driving force in achieving their company’s goals.

“We want to advise Zambians employers to reflect on the important role workers play in contributing to the accumulation of wealth in their companies” Short said

And International Labor Organization (ILO) Country Director Alexio Musindo notes that this year’s commemoration fits to continue the workers’ resounding demand for a decent wage.

In a speech read on his behalf by ILO representative Chana Chelemu Jere, Musindo said this year’s theme brings out an interesting but difficult dilemma which is a battle of employers and workers with business trying to maximize on profits while the work force on the other hand is demanding for increased pay.

“This year’s commemoration fits to continue the workers’ resounding demand for a decent wage” Musindo said

Meanwhile, Zambia congress of Trade Unions President Nkole Chishimba has advised workers in Zambia to join a union in the face of violent intimidation to collectively bargain to campaign for social protection, secure and safe jobs.

Chishimba also urged female workers to petition equality at work for investment in care economy by putting an end to the gender pay gap for their rightful place in society and union leadership.

“Workers in Zambia should join a union in the face of violent intimidation to collectively bargain to campaign for social protection, secure and safe jobs” Chishimba said
