The Minister of Higher Education, Professor Nkandu Luo has assured Rasatom Overseas, a company that will be constructing the Nuclear Research Center in Zambia, that the Government is in full support of the project and will adhere to its promises.

Professor Luo said this when the President of Rasatom Overseas Mr Evgeny Pakermanov paid courtesy call on her at her office in Lusaka.

She said that Government, under the Ministry of Higher Education, has committed itself and is looking forward to the commencement of the project and will not go back on its commitment.

She further explained that the nuclear plant was extremely important to Zambia in Health, Agriculture and the generation of power.

“We need to do more in sensitizing our people on the many positives that comes with Nuclear Science, knowledge and access to information is powerful, ” she said.

Meanwhile Mr Pakermanov told the Minister that 85 percent of the resources towards the project have already been sourced and that the Zambian Government will only contribute 15 percent.

Mr Pakermanov said that he was very optimistic and happy with the commitment has been shown by the Zambian Government over this partnership in the implementation of this project.

Mr Pakermanov said that the project would be a success because the Zambian Government has shown interest and willingness to make it a success.

And the Russian Federation Ambassador to Zambia, Mr Konstatine Kozhanov, said about 70 Zambian students are studying Nuclear Science in Russia and they will be the ones to drive the plant as they are getting the best education in nuclear science.

Mr Kozhanov told the Minister that once in operation the Center for Nuclear Plant, will be the hub for Nuclear Science in southern Africa.

“The plant will be run by Zambians as they would be trained to do so” he said.

  1. What happened with the advancement of witchcraft technology as a way forward for Zambia? Madam be consistent please!!!

    • This should be a big NO in all fairness. We are not yet ready for such an advancement as it comes with certain precautions and the community at large will be affected to their third generation.

    • Luo whats in it for you? I ask because a nuclear plant is not neccessary for Zambia. With a population of 17 million and without any space-age industries what will demand nuclear power in Zed? How much are the Russians offering you and your kids? Its happening in SA that government ministers have been bribed by Nuclear power ‘investors”

  2. This minister is eigther a witch or getting close to education witchcraft which has destroyed our soil through fertilizer. Now fertilizer chicken, animals, and forrests, your name. Thank you.

  3. In as much as it can clear all these power crisis can Zambia afford the cost ask South Africa?? its not a childs play

  4. we need such kind of investment in Zambia, development comes at a cost its ether go forward or remain behind with loadshadding

  5. Can some one tell this du.ll PHD holder that the proposed nuclear plant is a science research plant for medicines and research not power generation iwe kaponya luo……god help us if a so called PHD minister still believes Zambia has the capacity to run a nuke plant for power generation…….very thick this minister.

  6. This is one educated foooool….why nuclear and not a sustainable energy source…i hope the court rid us of this woman as soon as possible …its extremely urgent!!!!!

  7. If they teach us how to make zee missiles then yes. We need knowledge for everything nuclear, not just power generation.

  8. Madam, Zambia does net need this very very expensive project. At the moment Zambia is unable to put to use the total power generated in this country. This means that we already have excess power. This project will only create more debt for Zambia. Even if it’s meant for training, why should we train in something we wont use.

  9. Zambia is in a mess! Village id!ots are all over trying to impress other *****s! Nuclear energy is not sustainable. Disposal of nuclear waste is a serious matter and you need a good supply of water to cool the reactors without contaminating water supply. Serious issues!

  10. Prof. Hansoni and the online tribal grouping say, “She is wrong!” On what grounds? HaJealous plus HaTribes!

  11. What’s in it for the Russians? Why are they so interested in this project? What do they want in return?

  12. These Russians are not to be trusted. It probably Nuclear bombers they want. Please let this be a NO and NO and No. Rewenable energy is the way to go and not destructive energy

  13. Toxic waste will be dumped “legally” under those silly agreements and you will have no clue whether they are from your unaffordable stations or imported from spent facilities elsewhere. What is wrong with Africans kanshi? You have not even exploited your hydro power potential and solar and biogas and that is all you are dreaming of. I am sure a bribe of two cars will ensure the country is turned into a wasteland!

  14. DID THEY NOT SEE WHAT JUST HAPPENED IN SOUTH AFRICA – THIS SAME COMPANY HAS BEEN CHSED BECCAUSE OF DODGY DEALINGS – BECAUSE OF PAYNING HEFTY SUMS OF MONEY TO POLITICAL MEMBERS – HOW MUCH HAVE THEY PAID TO PF CADRES ??????????????????????????
IF NUCLEAR POWER IS ADOPTED IN ZAMBIA WE AND THE NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES ARE DOOMED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Lets be serious, Zambia has high grade uranium which we mine & give away to other countries. It makes sense that we become serious & also realise the benefits that come with it. We are always saying we should process copper here & export finished products, this is another way of local processing. So lets get this rolling

  16. In South Africa the Russian plan was rejected, now these guys come here trying to sell the same product to us!

Very bad move to even consider a Nuclear Plant when we have a govt that needs donors to provide dustbins and hand sanitizers when ever there Is a cholera outbreak!

  17. Its not a power plant but a nuclear science and research centre. Like NRDC but instead of focusing on natural resources development it will focus on developing nuclear science and technology. Basically its a school. Yes, it may have a research reactor built for practical purposes but its not on a scale of ending load shedding. We can’t be wasting the uranium resources we have in Zambia, and give up the many many benefits of nuclear science such as treatment of cancer, advancement of agriculture, widening export opportunities in agro produce, preventing soil erosion and fighting pests like mosquitoes and army worms simply because we are afraid of the unknown and because of a handful of unrelated accidents [nuclear power plants melting down] we don’t even want our people to study and…
