The Ministry of Gender is dismayed with the recent infernos that gutted goods worth millions of Kwacha at both Buteko and COMESA Markets in Mufulira and Lusaka respectively.

Ministry of Gender, Permanent Secretary (PS) Auxilia Ponga said traders especially women and the youth derive a livelihood contribution to economic growth of the nation.

Dr. Ponga has sent a message of goodwill to traders who have suffered irreplaceable loss at both markets.

She said it is unfortunate that as the country is grappling with other economic challenges, money in form of goods and services could be lost through avoidable losses.

Dr. Ponga has since called on contractors of markets and other trading places to work with government in its endeavour to build markets that are fireproof in a bid to protect goods in case of unforeseen fire or other disasters.

The PS has however, implored the Insurance brokers to find a way of engaging small business entrepreneurs such as marketers in an effort to secure their goods.

Dr. Ponga stated that her office will engage insurance companies on how best they can sensitise traders on the importance of securing their goods and provide affordable fees that could be managed by small entrepreneurs in form of insurance.

She further said her Ministry is ready to collaborate with stakeholders in finding a lasting solution to challenges being faced in the informal sector.

This is contained in statement made availed to ZANIS today by Ministry of Gender Media Liaison Officer, Mwape Mwenya.

    • And the contracts are awarded to the Chinese!!!!

There is no such things as fire proof within this context. These fires were started on purpose.

Zambians are being taken for fools (again).

    • There is no such thing as fire proof in this context.

These fires were started on purpose, so that certain people could benefit from awarding these contracts to the Chinese. Period.

I mean how does one start saying the contractors should do this or that, when, the cause of the fires is “not known”?

This PF government is full of thieves, rotten to the core.

  1. structural design requirements for fire conditions are not adhered to in such infrastructures. The market place is full of combustible materials, I suggest that all markets be built with high strength concrete elements .ie beams walls including the roof structure. In this way you will compartmentalize the shops, no easy spread of fire.

    • Laughing gas disease Hagain! They meant to cage animo farm and getting rid of arsonists little by little until they are extinct.

  2. Just cage the Arsonists Horgnaization. I urge the police and the security personnel to do a good homework and send at least 50 arsonists to a destination where we can never see them Hagain then Hatribes Horganization will wake h-up.
