Zambia U17 kicked off their COSAFA U17 Cup title defence on Thursday with a draw in Mauritius.
The 2017 winners were held to a 0-0 draw by Mozambique in their opening Group B match.
It wasn’t the start coach Tennant Chilumba had expected but was an improvement from last year’s meeting at the stage stage of the tournament that Mozambique won 1-0.
Zambia must now beat Lesotho on July 22 in their penultimate Group B match to stay relevant in the race to reach the semi-finals.
Record two-time champions South Africa is the other team in the group.
South Africa and Lesotho meet on Friday in their opening Group B match.
Winner of this year’s tournament will qualify to the 2019 U17 AFCON to be hosted by Tanzania.
CAF last year adopted regional zonal U17 tournaments as a format for qualifiers for the U17 AFCON.
