Government has repealed the Companies Act of 2011, making the registration of churches as business houses illegal.
Patents and Companies Registration (PACRA) Assistant Registrar Christopher Mapani says the new law will see churches who want to register with the agency to run businesses being turned away.
Speaking at a stakeholders workshop on the Companies Act in Kitwe this morning, Mr Mapani said the new law was signed by the Minister in June and it is now being enforced.
Mr Mapani revealed that all religious organisations who intend to run businesses must register with the Registrar of Societies but PACRA is now registering businesses and not religious groups.
Meanwhile, Mr Mapani has disclosed that it is illegal for Pastors or other religious leaders to share profits in churches.
He says churches have no shareholding and therefore it is an offence for the leadership to share profits like shareholders.
And officially opening the workshop which has attracted the business and legal fraternity, Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu said the repeal of the Companies Act has brought relief to workers.
Mr Mpundu said in the past, liquidators used to run away with a lot of money, leaving former workers destitute.
He added that the new law has also given guidelines on the role and qualifications of liquidators, a move that will bring about professionalism in the handling of liquidated companies.

This is good news. It is time God’s house of Worship was for feeding his children with intelligence and Christ’s teachings plus salvation. If churches want to own businesses, they still can, but have to register it as an independent business. This is a simple issue to understand.
The truth is many Churches today in Zambia have spiritually, technically and legally abdicated the teachings of the HOLY BIBLE straying into unholy activities for money and riches.
This guise is not only about fraud but extremely evil; Tax evaders are now hiding under the veil of CHRIST to exhort money out of genuine believers.
These agents of the devil masquerading as men and women of God must be identified and simply prosecuted.

It’s been long overdue, people register churches with only the wife and husband as shareholders. And when there’s a marriage dispute the church suffers. This will affect the Pentecostals like Nervous Mumba and John Maambo. A church is supposed to be owned by the general membership. This is a way to go. Some businesses have always hidden behind the image of church to avoid paying a fair share of taxes. Investor exposed!

And the religious minister should also ensure who so ever is called a pastor should have a diploma or degree in theology to curb these mushrooming churches otherwise they should be closed down.

Please understand that a person becomes a priest upon believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. A person becomes a christian– s/he is a member of the universal church which is the body of Jesus Christ at the same time he is a member of a Local church at a particular location. In the Church, God has given gifts to believers…some are preachers, pastors, evangelists, teachers etc. These gifts are given gratuitously, there is no having a diploma or a degree for you to be a pastor, teacher or priest of God and Jesus Christ. You buy these gifts by just believing in Jesus Christ the son of God.
