Zambia Police officers on Thursday night burnt a hostel at October block which houses female UNZA students during a student protest.

The protest which started around 22:00hrs on Thursday, continued until the early hours of Friday.

The students blocked the Great East Road as they burnt tires and brought down booths belonging to mobile service providers.

Students are demanding their meal and accommodation allowances which have been delayed since August.

The police officers were chasing after some students who had run towards the new residence for female students.

The officers continued firing teargas and in the process, one of the blocks at October hostels caught fire.

The female students, who hid in the block, scampered in all directions as others fell down and injuring themselves in the process.

The fire which started around 01:30, lasted for about 30 minutes.

Around 02:00 Hours, two Lusaka City Council fire trucks arrived on the scene but students had managed to quench the fire.

  1. No idea whetso ever of crowd control. The other day it is live bullets killing people, the other day it is clear abuse of Public Order Act (giving people permission to gather or not, a mandate you don’t have), the other day is using tear gas where there is no need, during under 20 AFCON tear gas was just released at independence stadium for fun. Somebody must stop this

    • All this is preventable, if Govt did its duty non of this would happen. Thank God no one lost their precious life.

    • Forty two MILLION DOLLARS for fire trucks and they cannot even get to a fire in time!!!!!!!!

Those trucks should just be sent back or sold and the students employed to control fires – They are doing a much better job and are much, much cheaper!

But then all the kickbacks and bribes will have to paid back too!

When are these thieves that are stealing our future going to be put where they belong? IN JAIL !!

    • FEMALE UNZA STUDENT DIES IN RIOT AFTERMATH

A 4th year female student at University of Zambia
has died in the riots that rocked the institution last night.

Vespers Shimuzhila, a student in the School of Education, is alleged to have suffocated to death at around 3am, when police stormed the University.

October hostel was set ablaze during the riots while police fired teargas canisters on the rioting students.

    • Everything is now disorganized in Zambia under corrupt PF. The fire department get’s to the scene of the fire after 30 minutes. Why take 30 minutes? Is this a joke or what? This is a shame.

  2. Police should hit them hard as they would like to use that for the fuel increase protests disguised in meal allowances. We’re all affected by the increase but that’s not justification to promote a privatisation crook who has hidden the privatisation loot in the paradise papers

    • Just pay the student meal allowance you theives….stop blaming HH….and reduce the cost of living…….

just last week lungu spant $4 million on a useless trip to the UN. This could have paid for meal allowances for students…

    • I would like to believe that most of us here love Zambia- except one or two despicable bloggers who always post inflammatory and tribalistic junk.
So I think we need to critically look at what is happening.
      1. Civil servants not paid
      2. Council workers not paid
      3. Unza not funded
      4. Students not paid meal allowances
      5. Student protests
      6. Lecturer go slows

      Meantime
      1. Huge delegation to UN on chartered plane
      2. Backdated salary increments for the President and friends

Not the best picture. Regardless of who you support, this must cause you concern

  3. And this happened a few hours after a named political party had a rally mascarading as press briefing at its secretariat. The same rally was repeated on PRIME TV between 21 and 22 hours. When I watched it the speech was just appealing to peoples’ emotions in light of fuel upward adjustment.
In my view the political address is what gave birth to UNZA riot. Take it or leave it!

  4. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND I HOPE ZAMBIAN POLICE ARE GOING TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS TO THE HOSTEL.
STUDENTS PUT THE FIRES OUT PROBABLY BECAUSE THE NEW FIRE TENDER TRUCKS DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO WATER TO PUT OUT THE FIRES —— GOVERNMENT OVERPAID FOR THESE TRUCKS – THEY SHOULD HAVE SPENT THIS MONEY ON UNZA !!!!!!!!!!!

STUDENTSAND ZAMBIANS SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTEST AGAINST THE MISMANAGEMENT OF THE COUNTRY —- IT IS A SHAME THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE PEOPLE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SPEAK UP AGAINST THIS CORRUPT GOVERNMENT. DOWN WITH DICTATORSHIP

    • Will the students pay reparations for the booths that they destroyed? Because that is someone’s livelihood they destroyed all in the name of the right to demonstrate

  5. Everyone is protesting everywhere. Even students are sitting on edge. In a normal jurisdiction Kakoma Kanganja would have been dismissed for causing such mayhem.

UPND stop inciting people to protest anyhow. Spaka and your goons behave. Control your kaponyas.

    • Just tell lungu to provide jobs and pay the students meal allawances …..just last week lungu spent $4 million on a useless trip to the UN to talk about Mandela…?

  6. This is really sad that the system is failing to plan. The government has not given the students the meal allowances etc how do you expect them to behave? Kampyongo has never been to college and he is your minister of home affairs, you know why because he has limited thinking like Idi Amin and Bowman of Zambia. When reporting to his boss he simply says “naba donona and have regretted” and the boss pats him on the back. Your lecturers too have not been paid but Nkadu Luo has just had her increament back dated to January 2018!!!! I never thought Lungu being a lwayer could govern us like this. This Knadu had her eectrion nullified but continues to make decisions. This is the worst government in the history of this country.Think wisely guys 2021 is very far.

  7. The cost of living in zambia is spirilling out of control …..the only way out is for GRZ to sell off remaining assets.

Lungu and pf have failed to provide jobs.
They are talking about manufacturing now when they have looted all the money…

Things will only get worse ….the global economy is at the mercy of Mr trump v China. And looks like China will cut back at spending.

The best Zambians can do is grow your own back yard food to sustain your family and pray…

  8. It is very unacceptable for this ugly trend to continue at UNZA, its even strange that the proble of meal, book and whatever allowance has never been properly addressed and planned for to avoid inconveniecing students and their studies. The police have never learnt how to deal with the protesting crowds while the crowds have never learnt to protest without causing havoc. All stakeholders must sit down and plan for a better of managing these institutions and avoid further damage to propert.

    • You are all blaming police not learnt how to with stupid protesters but you are not telling them how they should do. If it was a peaceful demonstration no ways of burning peoples properties. in other countries we have been seen protests with out destroying peoples properties .

  9. Some f.ools here just surprise me just how do you manage to support such a government of the corrupt. A hungry man is an angry man. How do you expect the students to learn. Just yesterday someone was in USA enjoying himself and giving a lousy speech too the delegates and increasing his salary. Here he cannot find money to pay students. This is the worst government ever in this country. We just have to vote them out. And if they try to rig as they have always been doing next time someone will regret for having done so. This place will be on fire. Kuya bebele.
    Disaster!!!!!

  10. Will these people ever finish school?this will just lead to closing the university, elo ma police men exergeratte, anything ni tear gas na gun shot even to a young student who dint beat anyone, next riot, make sure u stone and beat these policemen before they kill u,i have guns, contact me at 0942853999

  11. Please as much as we are insulting Police men dont forget that they are also human beings with families and most of you on this forum you dont even have children to take care of. Here in Zambia we have made these UNZA students big headed as a result they conduct them selves irresponsibly. Not even a single day when the had a peaceful protest always destroying people’s properties.

  12. No one can support what the government is doing but do these illiterate graduates have to go on the streets and destroy people’s property? What if civil servants and every other person who has not been paid go about destroying property. How is that going to help. This is being stupid. Ati UNZA. Ifikopofye.

  13. We have criminals at UNZA!!!!
While some students are busy doing the viva, others are busy scheming torching the university. They buy petrol in five litre containers just to burn down the university. How do you do a viva at night seriously? Each and every student should be made to pay a surcharge of ZMK100.00 for the renovation of that burnt hostel.
and criminal investigations should be instituted to find out who exactly started the fire because there is no way a teargas canister can start the fire.

  14. This is happening barely 24 hours after the swearing in of one Bonny Kapeso who is good at Petrol bombs! Is this what we should expect going forward? Killing a student who was probably not even part of the demonstration? Mwabombeni batata ba Lungu for giving us ba Kapeso!

  15. SHARON CANNOT COMMENT ON THIS WHY?CZ SHE SEEMS SO VOCAL FOR NOTHING!IN A FEW DAYS THE WILL CALL A DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING WITH BOUGHT PASTOR.LESA AKAMINKANDA BAFIKALA.SAD SITUATION FOR THE STUDENT.I KNOW SOME FOOLS WILL WANT TO SAY HH IS THE CAUSER OF THE CONFUSION WHEN THERE HEADS ARE FULL OF CONFUSION. MR. NKANDU LUO WHAT IS WORD ON THIS?
    MHRIP OF THE STUDENT.

  16. IMWEEE NOW TEAR GASES ARE ABLE TO IGNITE FIRE…UUMMMMM UBUKOPO .. TEAR GASES HAVE BEEN USED FROM TIME IMMEMORIAL FOR CROWD DISPERSAL NEVER HAVE THEY CAUSED FIRE..

TEAR GASES CAN NEVER IGNITE FIRE NEVER…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Even when students are misehaving ,breaking our personal vehicles, you want the police just to keep quiet.Do you know who is supposed to maintain Law and order in the nation. There you go blaming Lungu,Tongas alone is not Zambia, you wait for 2021,Zambians knowshow bad you people are,you even kill.

  18. I miss wazakaza ng’uni when it comes to dealing with university riots! Ba kapeso please deal with the chaps! Kill afew the rest will stop this nonsense of damaging Innocent people’s property.

  19. Comment:this world my brothers and sisters!
when shall we be holistically be liberated!when shall all the expectations of every citizen be fulfilled on this planet!under whose govt shall everyone be filled with joy and satisfaction!
may the Messiah descend FRM heaven with angels and shamboks to weep those who mercilessly kill each other for their political affiliation!in the second liberation i believe together we shall fight and there shall be even prosperity for corruption will never be thought of!

  20. People ‘conveniently’ forget that this is not a one off but a perennial serious matter of a government failing to fulfill certain responsibilities. Some may say there should have been changes to the way allowances, tuition fees etc. are dealt with. But in the meantime there is a system in place that is not respected by ignorant selfish politicians you have placed in government. People who have no inkling of the value of education – always thinking of how they can enrich themselves. Is it a wonder that various ministries are implicated in the abuse of funds.
You don’t provide allowances that are part of the contract for sustenance of the students livelihoods for two months and then brutalize and condemn them when they react. Some bloggers even have the audacity to comment from a…
