USTDA backs feasibility study for 100 MW wind farm in Zambia

Independent power producer Globeleq will get some USD 1.15 million in grant financing to conduct a feasibility study for a 100-MW wind project in Zambia.

The funds will be extended by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), Globeleq announced last week.

The company’s proposal is for a 40-turbine wind park that will be connected to the national grid by a single-circuit overhead transmission line.

The plant will be located in Muchinga Province.

More specifically, Globeleq Zambia Wind Ltd will use the financing to complete the technical analysis for the project, create the final design of the plant and the needed equipment for its construction.

The study itself will be conducted by DNV GL Energy USA Inc, a unit of Norway-headquartered testing and advisory company DNV GL. Globeleq, in turn, will provide financial, development and project management planning services.

According to Globeleq, the project is in line with Zambia’s objective to diversify its power mix and also backs the goals of Power Africa and the Electrify Africa Act supporting Africa’s energy sector.

  1. Good prospect for Muchinga. The province is so underdeveloped. In fact, its animals in the Luangwa Valley have more advanced communities than its people. Excuse the pun. They have actually done an almost perfect job preserving the wildlife heritage save for losing the Rhinos.

This is something that will utilise the magnificent mountains it is well endowed with. A good Environmental Assessment is a must on how these towers will affect the wildlife.

  2. Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre( KGRTC) is already conducting a feasibily study for the setting up a wind farm in namalundu district. They have collectcted data for close two years now.
