Government has appealed to Zambians to stop the tendency of waiting for President Edgar Lungu to visit and supervise them for people to get motivated to clean their surroundings and communities.

Local Government Permanent Secretary, Amos Mulupenga said Zambians must mobilise themselves and take ownership of the cleaning exercise as a daily routine in making Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy.

Mr Malupenga said the cleaning exercise on the last Saturday of every month is symbolic as people are expected to clean their environments all the time.

The Permanent Secretary said the Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy campaign was not a one off event hence the need for all Zambians to come on board and develop the habit of cleaning their environment to prevent outbreaks of diseases related with dirtiness.

Mr Malupenga Stated that Government is not satisfied with the levels of involvement and participation of Zambians in the Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign.

He pointed out that there is room for improved levels of response and expressed hope that increased instances of cleaning exercises led by the President will help remind people to get involved in the campaign.

Mr Malupenga explained that the campaign is not a government programme but a personal activity for every Zambian adding that government is only providing leadership to ensure that it succeeds.

He said his ministry which has been delegated with the responsibility of overseeing the campaign, will work flat out to ensure that Zambians adopt the campaign and use it to improve the cleanliness of their environment.

President Edgar Lungu yesterday participated in the cleaning of Matanda Market in Zambia Compound in Kafue District where he urged Zambians to partner with Government to ensure that the country becomes a Cholera free zone.

Meanwhile, The Keep Lusaka Clean Committee has awarded deserving companies and shops that have kept their premises clean.

Speaking when presenting an award to Homeline Stores in Lusaka today, Reliance for Keep Zambia Clean President, Christopher Manda said there is need to have a positive change of mindset if the focus of having a clean city is to be achieved.

Mr. Manda said Homeline stores has come out second in the cleanliness category because of its determination to keep their surrounding hygienic whilst Radian stores has scooped the first prize.

He has encouraged other companies to cooperate with the committee and partner with government in keeping the city clean.

He noted that it is the beginning of better things to come because the city of Lusaka now looks cleaner than it was in the recent past.

In receiving the award Homeline Stores Chief Executive Officer, Muhammad Kalif said he was excited to receive the award.

Mr. Kalif said there is need to work in the spirit of One Zambia One Nation, if the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and healthy campaign is to be won.

    • That’s what happens in household when you as a father start washing dishes and bathing babies.
A man is supposed to split hard wood to firewood.
A man drinks with chiefs and priests, dancing to smooth jazz of Uncle Rex.
When a man is found with Kaizer & Kanene then you know, when they he deserves picking up a shovel to open drainages.

    • Nyamazayi-in-chief

Market cleaning is Lungu’s publicity stunt every time he wants to travel out of the country for a long time. Tomorrow we’ll be told that he’s traveling to this country after that to another & another local trip when he returns.

We need systems in place not 1 lazy man with a shovel posing for cameras ati now the country is clean. It’s being VISION-LESS

    • When we pay taxes so that you employ people to do that work but you decide to concentrate on spending on cash transfer elections popular call by elections and purchasing high end products like private jets, people will leave the shovel to you.

  1. IWe Malipenga, Let our Cleaner in Chief do his job … Kikikiki
That’s his only chance to find his lost vision in that trash.
The only thing missing here is Freedom Sikazwe’s smile!

  2. No no no nobody is waiting for Lungu, that’s the sign that that he has nothing to do, he’s only showing how lazy h’z, “period “

  3. But why shouldnt people wait for him to do that. He is being paid to work for the people. Thats why they have even allowed him to steal from them. Let him work after all he is being paid handsomely plus the corruption from the roads and the collections by ZRA.
Besides the poor he has made or created through his corruption don’t have that energy to work. If he is tired he can call those he is eating with to come help him. We may not expect much from someone with no vision and thats the bottom line.
    Disaster!!!!

  4. The guy and his friend are the only ones wearing the mask which means he only cares about himself and his friends .The rest can breath in all the germs and catch an infections .The chief executive of the country is supposed to be responsible about the health and safety of its people and not just care about himself and his friends .Zambians are not made of lungs that can withstand anything .As a matter of fact because of the poverty around they needs to be protected more from germs and provided with masks .

  5. How selfish can a leader be to protect himself with a musk and not get those cleaning with him to protect themselves? Ni usogoleli wa bwanji uyu kansi? Is it kulibonesha or what?

  6. Real world leaders of working countries like Japan ,UAE or Spain don’t do street cleaning bcuz they have set up self regulating institutionalized city-wide cleaning .Zambia is not a working country its dysfunctional.

    • We are generally have low standards as Zambians and throw litter everywhere. Let us be responsible for a change and clean up after ourselves. In the countries you have mentioned citizens are responsible and don’t litter anyhow. Last time I was in Zambia, I was trying to educate a bus conductor who was throwing some litter through the window when he was sitting next to a rubbish bin. He didn’t even understand why he had a rubbish bin on the bus. To him the bin was only used when he did his “round” to collect litter on the bus. We seriously need to change our attitude because at the end of the day it is the common person who gets cholera.
