4% salary hike for civil servants is retrogressive-Kafwanka

Share

Financial Analyst Blessings Kafwanka has stated that Civil Servants deserve a salary increment of not less than 10% across the board.

The Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union confirmed that they have signed a new collective agreement with the government for a 4% salary hike.

But Mr. Kafwanka said offering civil servants an increment of 4% when the rate of inflation is at 8% is retrogressive.

”An employee who had a gross pay of K6,000 will now have a gross pay of K6,280. Even though there’s a marginal increase of K280 in the nominal pay, the real income has reduced by 4% (8%-4%) In short, after the 4% increment, the basket of goods that a civil servant can afford has actually reduced by 4% due to inflation, ” he said.

”Yes, we understand the pressure on our national resources but employees are a vital resource in any organization who deserve good compensation for their labour. The government must lead by example. They are actually sending a negative message to private sector employers.”

Mr Kafwanka said Zambi cannot prioritize things such as purchasing private jets and reintroducing deputy ministerial positions and then claim that the country cannot afford to give public sector workers a reasonable pay due to the current economic hardships.

”We need to get our priorities right. We must place more value on civil servants than politicians because they are in the frontline of implementing government policy, ” he said.

    • 4 % for people who don’t deserve it is ok. Change your culture first before you start demanding for 10% you Lazy civil servants

    • K280 is 2 and half of 25kg of breakfast meal so what’s the big deal. There are people who work under very trying conditions but can not even afford a 10kg. Just move on. Don’t you know that if GRZ is failing to pay you on time at current salaries what more if they give you bumper increase. You will be waiting for one year for a months pay.

    • Civil Servants don’t actually deserve a salary increment but require resources to perform their duties e.g. motor vehicles, fuel, stationary etc.

  1. Comment:Our freedom is fading away due to lack of excellence and leadership.bashi Emma balinafwe????????????????,come 2021 please.

  2. 4% is just OK. when you relate it to the attitude of most GRZ workers who open face book and computer as they work. It has to take people like Bowman to remind them about punctuality. To some people’ whatever the Government does is NOT good enough but their promises. Why not one day say this is a plus by the Government?

    • Besides they are always willy dealing. Just look at the mansions they are putting up. The 4% is not retrogressive but very progressive.

  3. The law is very weak on foreign exchange and especially externalization of dollars. Day in and day out the dollar is being taken out and very few of it is brought in. The opposition has a hand in this because they are always painting a black picture of the country and its leadership. If about 70% is brought in through the mines and you go to disturb the free running of the same then what do you expect?

  4. comment: from my own opinion and not from others’ s opinion. what blessing kafwanka has analyzed, anyway it is good to fight for more increment but we should also considering those in private sector such as parastatal companies like zampost among others. we all know that, government is one of the shareholders in zampost but what has the government is doing towards zampost when others are signing for the increments? it is unfair more especially that, others are not included in such increments. let’s considering one another.

  5. When you hear people who are eating from the corrupt by the corrupt and for the corrupt issuing statements that demean the civil servants then just know that they are either stupid or imbiciles whose brain cells are dead to critically analyse the role and responsibilities of a civil servants. If the civil servants are lazy, it goes to plot 1, ministers, permanent Secretaries and least are junior civil servants. We saw when Sata was minister of local government, health and how the civil servants performed and changed because he was there to serve and cadres never used to have permanent secretaries posts unlike in lungu government

  6. Increase civil servants salaries by 10% and reduce ministers and president salaries by 20%. Government officials are spoilt by their hefty salaries n perks. Let’s balance this issue n roll.
