We anticipate more defections from UPND ahead of the August 12 polls-YALI

Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) has anticipated more defections from the United Party for National Development (UPND) ahead of the August 12 polls.

YALI president Andrew Ntewewe said in an interview yesterday that leaving UPND because of its dictatorial style of leadership and tribalism. This comes following the defection of the former UPND member Mr. Charles Kakoma who served as the party spokesperson for 14 years.

And Mr Ntewewe said the resignation of Mr Kakoma opens more wounds to Zambians.

“The resignation of their former spokesperson opens another wound in the eyes of the Zambian people. It opens another wound in a sense that this political party which is supposed to be an alternative to government is unable to offer credible checks and balances because of lack of its clear principles and values,” he said.

“Everyone who has left UPND has talked this issue of lack of intraparty democracy. Where everything revolves around one person. And that is HH. Where anything in this party can only go if it goes through the Alpha and Omega of the party who is HH. To us, that leaves too much to be desired. Talk about GBM, talk about Kakoma, you talk about Saboi Imboela, you talk about so many other who have left. All of them have one significant story; one, UPND is a tribal political party, it promotes regionalism, number two, UPND is a dictatorial political party, its decisions revolve around one individual.”

Mr Ntewewe also stated that there have been more divisions in the opposition party from the time it held its general Assembly which we slammed for not meeting the benchmarks of a democratic election.

He noted that the opposition party is structured in a way that everything revolves around the party’s “life president,” Mr Hakainde Hichilema.

The Initiative’s president said “We are very certain as the Young African Leadership Initiative that the resignation of Kakoma is not the last one. We are going to see so many more resigning from the UPND so that HH will remain alone. Because ultimately, in modern-day leadership, you cannot revolve all the powers around one individual.”

“If you look at how UPND has been structured, its campaign messages and everything else revolves around one man. Now that is not how you do modern-day politics. That is not what servanthood leadership is about. Servanthood leadership is about getting the collective wisdom of a collective group of individuals, of a collective group of citizens, who are able to provide effective leadership. Unfortunately, what UPND offers is only one person. What UPND offers is only Bally and that, unfortunately, is not servanthood leadership.”

  1. This job seeking Ntewewe fimofimo should just declare his YALI a branch of PF.

Absolutely no difference between him and ‘Monday’ Chanda….

  2. The lack of understanding the role of opposition political parties in Zambia with some people is unbelievable. Without a strong political opposition party, Zambia will be dead. Governance checks that the opposition provides needs to be celebrated in every sense.

At company level competition is protected by law and hence you have Competition and consumer protection Act to deal with companies that wants to monopolize the economy.

Let us learn to celebrate the opposition political parties.

  3. Ntewewe has revealed that he and Yali are PF surrogates. Instead of talking about internal Affairs of UPND and HH he should talk about the upcoming Convention of the Panga Family. Who is going to be appointed PF President and PF VP? Who is the PF Presidential Candidate and Running Mate? If ECL is the Presidential Candidate for PF has he got an Eligibility Certificate from Concourt? The Constitution is very clear that ECL cannot contest the 2021 Election becoz he has already been elected and sworn in twice in 2015 and 2016 and therefore doesn’t qualify for a Third Term. Concourt has to clear ECL for a Third Term. If ECL imposes himself on Zambians thru an illegal and unconstitutional Third Term then Zambians will deal with him. Breaching the Republican Constitution is treasonable. The…

  4. YALI you should also tell us how much PF is paying the defectors, it seem like a very lucrative business. I am sure PF has surpassed Real Madrid in buying “players”. And why are you so obsessed with HH, if you were objective the least thing you would have done is protested or complained when he is harsed or intimidated instead of celebrating.
Meanwhile the masses are wallow in poverty and hunger, you are always with toothpicks in you mouth’s.
Eat while it lasts, 12 August almost here!

  5. We are the winning team. I have already bought 100s of bottles of dom perignon for the August celebrations. We will drink and dance the night away ???????

  6. Ntwetwetwe has finally come out in the open declaring himself a PF cadre which we all knew instead of hiding behind an ngo.

  7. During an election season, there are numerous defections from any direction. Ntwewe’s thinking is that when it is not a revolution the masses will always move from the opposition to the ruling party. By April 2011, it was known to everyone that Sata would win to shame Banda.
With the defragmented opposition, Lungu will triumph.
