ERB prepares for Electric vehicle deployment

Share

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has developed a concept paper to prepare for the imminent deployment of Electric Vehicles on the Zambian market.

ERB Senior Manager Electricity, Stephen Mwiinga says the Board will be holding a stakeholder engagement next month to discuss the Electric Vehicle industry in Zambia.

Mr. Mwiinga says one of the issues that will be addressed at the meeting is the development of building standards that will see new public infrastructure such as Shopping Malls incorporate charging bays for Electric Vehicles.

Speaking in a separate interview, Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA)Head of Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga , said the institution has already started putting up the regulatory framework and standards for Electric Vehicles.

Mr. Mubanga said the Agency is in talks with the African Organisation for Standardization to learn best practices of regulating Electric Vehicles.

Meanwhile, Toyota Zambia Marketing Manager Michael Daka said Government should give incentives to the Electric Vehicle industry for it to get established in the country.

Zambia will have a comparative advantage in the manufacturing of electric vehicles because it is  one the biggest producer of copper and cobalt a key component in the manufacturing of electric  car batteries.

  1. KEEP PREPARING THIS IS A LONG LONG WAY !!! THESE ARE FOR CITIES NOT THE LONG DISTANCES WE TRAVEL HERE
    AND THE PRICE ??
AND WITH OUR ZESCO WHICH WONT BE ANY BETTER FOR A LONG WHILE

  2. @ 2 But why not start with hybrid ones so that even if power finishes pa 10 miles you switch to the usual mode. Anyway, whatever the case may be, the regulatory framework has to be done.

  3. PF cadres still dont believe this is Zambia. And mind you cadres, no one in Africa is talking Electric Vehicles yet other than Zambia. The rest of producers are new comers are still stuck with Combustion Engines: South Africa,Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Rwanda etc. I know South Africa is starting to sell them but they are not talking of production at all. So on this one i can say Zambia is way ahead of the entire pack on the continent.

  4. It will be great if we quicken the process and be the first ones on the continent to set up an Electric Vehicle manufacturing plant. Which i believe we might break the record but lets keep our fingers crossed. Besides, Zambia has all the Engineers needed to manufacture any car all they lucked was political will and funding. But now, we both and in excess. HH himself is the only President in Africa that preaches “Electric Vehicles” and secondly, money is not a problem in the New Dawn-look at CDF & Europe has now officially opened up to us for funding & let alone our USA. So those engineers should jst design their proposals like yesterday and submit and the rest will be history.
