Current conditions of service for Councillors in the country are heartbreaking-Sunday Chanda

Share

Kanchibiya Member of Parliament Sunday Chanda has described the current conditions of service for Councillors in the country as heartbreaking.

And the Kanchibiya MP has since requested the acting Clerk of the National Assembly that he on October 12th 2022 move a motion on the floor of the house for Parliament to urge government to improve conditions of service for the councillors, a move he says cuts across all parties.

“This is not a partisan motion, it is a motion that cuts across partisan rank and file, the conditions of service for our councillors is something that is heartbreaking.” He said.

The Kanchibiya Lawmaker said this is especially for Councillors from rural constituencies such as Kanchibiya and Shiwang’andu among others from both the opposition and ruling parties including independents.

He hopes that the Executive will be magnanimous enough to agree to the equitable distribution of resources.

“We hope that government will be magnanimous enough to agree that in terms of equity, because we are making this argument on the basis of equity that thee ought to be equitable distribution of resources,” he said.”

“And our councillors have families to run, they’re doing a great job serving our country, ” he added.

Hon. Chanda further said that the issue of councillors’ conditions service should be given attention with the Emoluments Commission in place.

“With the Emoluments Commission operationalised, their issue must be given the significance it ought to be given.” He said.

  1. The role of councilor has always been a voluntary service. It’s only in the last regime that they started demanding salaries. It’s a role for serving and not enriching oneself

    • PF need to change and I mean new faces these old brooms can not contribute anything tangible if they are not talking about tribalism and homosexuality their true colours are exposed like Sunday here. Why doesnt he propose reducing MPs benefits like the huge car loans they get I mean what do they want to buy from a $100,000 loan?

  2. This moron Sunday Ch@nda thinks Politics is just to eat this the mindset of most Zambian Politicans …this is why his party encouraged councillors selling plots in their wards…being a councillor is not a full-time Monday to Friday role its part-time its no wonder they are paid allowances higher than any civil servant.

  3. We are being told to cut back; subsidies have been removed these Politicans are just thinking of themselves …he is able to forward such motions because he know well that the Ruling Party will be in trouble with its foot soldiers if it disagrees and if it agrees civil servants will also want salary increases across the board.

  4. These are volunteers who are paid a sitting allowance every time they come for a council meeting and therefore maybe get a deduction from their normal day to day jobs. The only thing they do every month is attend sittings and you want them to get a salary for that? Besides no one forced them to become a councillor.

  5. WHILE IN GOVT SUNDAY SPENT ÆLL THE ?EARS JUST GOING ROUND DANCINCING TO T?NES OF ‘DUÑUNA’ AND ‘ALÉBWELELAPO’ AND SPEEARHEADING CADRERSM. HE WAS VERY MUCH AWARE OF LOOTING OF OUR RESOURES INCLUDING ILIGAL L?ND ALLOCATION, STEALNG PUBLIC MONEY BUT SAID OUT BECAUSE HE WAS A GRET BENEFICIARY AND CLÄUSE TO THEENGINEER. SO CHANDA SHOULD BE BE LAST PERSON TO TALK ABÔUT CONDITIONS BUT SHOULD JUST FÃŽRST WAIT FÔR THE FIXER TO RESTORE THE ECONOMY . AS FOR NOW I JUST ADVISE CHAND HELP THE FIXER IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE INCLUDING IDENTIFYING THOSE WHO ARE STILL HIDING STOLLEN MONEY AND VEHICLES

  7. You don’t become a councilor to earn a living…you should have your own means of income….like a full time job….and you only get paid sitting allowance once you attend council meetings….stop encouraging laziness….being a councilor is just a platform so you can showcase your community organization skills in case you want to run for an MP…..
