UPND Condemns Archbishop Alick Banda’s Utterances on Police Search at Edgar Lungu’s House

Share

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has expressed serious concern over recent statements made by Archbishop Alick Banda regarding the search conducted by the Zambia Police Service at the residence of former President Edgar Lungu. In a statement, the party called on the Archbishop to retract his comments, which they say promote gender inequality and could incite division among Zambians.

The Archbishop had questioned the need for 200 police officers to be sent to former first lady Esther Lungu’s residence, stating that he was uncertain if the same number of officers would be sent if it were a man.

In the statement, UPND Media Director Ms. Ruth Dante Heaton called on the Archbishop to retract his statements, which she said could promote gender inequality and division among Zambians.

Ms. Dante Heaton stated, “As a leader and man of God, Archbishop Banda’s language has the potential to promote higher gender inequality, which is something he should be preaching against. It is important to recognize that language has a powerful impact on how the world perceives women, and it is our responsibility to use language that promotes equality and respect for all individuals.”

Ms. Dante Heaton also clarified that the police had gone to the residence to conduct a search for stolen vehicles and had a valid search warrant, not a warrant of arrest. She emphasized that it was not appropriate for a religious leader to spread false information and fuel division among Zambians.

“Archbishop Banda should be playing an objective advisory role to those in political leadership and promoting unity among Zambians. As a man of God, he should be providing guidance and direction to the leadership of the country and avoiding making sentiments that have the potential to divide our nation,” Ms. Dante Heaton added.

  1. Why should he retract the statement. When HH interfered with the presidential motorcade and was arrested, you condemned government for the way he was picked up. I used to think Upnd was intellectually advanced. How wrong I was…. worse than PF call boys. What a shame.

    • I know how mediocre our politicians are so I wasn’t expecting better. However, I was hoping HH would surprise me with some clean politics but it is the same old game of politricks or should I say Animal Farm. Four legs good Two legs better. For those who have never read Animal Farm: Four legs are only said to be good when you are part of the oppressed As soon as you join the ruling class two legs become better.

    • Iwe ch.i.ka.la cawiso sometimes try to excercise your moribund brain. How do you kill a fly with a sledge hammer. Mrs Lungu may be at fault but to send a battalion with armoured vehicles is just a way to frighten Lungu.

    • The robbery and money laundering suspects refused any police involvement and called for hoards of violent PF cadrs to block any police attempts at interrogation………..

An armed battalion of police had to be called up to establish civilty and adherence to order to establish the facts ………

  4. UPND need media and Public relations training if there are people who you should never go into a public spat with its the church or clergymen…even Lazy Lungu when he was criticised publicly by them he never responded publicly not even his attack dogs Mumbi, Sunday and Mwanza instead he went there personally to pay the clergy man a visit if he is corrupt he would offer a fat envelope as donation.

  8. Like the “Serpent”, in that garden, he cunningly had to get to the man through the woman, when the target was (the) Lungu. My question is, is there nothing that H H has which can directly associate Lungu to a crime other than these monkeying tricks? If you must get to that woman with a battalion, what more when it is a direct face off with the man?

  9. How do you take $400,000 to your nieces place for safe keeping? Is the nieces place more secure than ECLs place? The money was hidden at the nieces place and not safe keeping

  10. The police must help Esther find her money. She wants her money back from her relative. Once money is returned, then find out the source. She got the house deeds and vehicles to try and claim back her property. Do you need a battalion demystifying such a simple case?

    • And where did the niece get the nerve to report her aunt to the police. Someone with interest is behind…. someone who had an idea and wants to roast Lungu

  11. Do you remember the Hatembo siblings?
This family was claiming “something” from “someone”. Did they get it? How did that story end? How were they treated by someone? Someone abducted them to silence them about the something. Don’t bring issues where your past is soiled.
