Hakainde Hichilema Criticises Public Discourse Culture

Hakainde Hichilema Criticises Public Discourse Culture
Hakainde Hichilema has stated that one of the main weaknesses in the country’s civic space is that too many individuals engage political issues without thinking through context or checking the information surrounding a particular matter. He said the level of reactionary commentary visible in national discussions has reached a point where major topics are approached in a casual manner, without examination of the details that shape outcomes. His position was that responsible citizenship is not defined by the volume of commentary but by the quality of reasoning that precedes it.

Hichilema said the country cannot build the development environment it requires if public debate is guided by instant reaction. According to his reflection, large economic decisions involve complex sequencing, technical analysis, capital constraints and institutional responsibilities. He said that discussions which ignore these realities weaken the mechanics of collective understanding because individuals then form positions without reference to actual data. In his message, the Head of State said the national political environment suffers when citizens prioritise talking over thinking.

Hichilema stated that several policy questions require citizens to understand structural constraints. He pointed out that the global environment has changed across energy markets, capital markets, food value chains and financing conditions. According to his message, these developments cannot be dismissed through simplistic generalisations. He said that serious evaluation is required because national development cannot be separated from these external forces, and that commentary must reflect this.

He argued that individuals who discuss national governance without applying analysis are not participating in constructive national dialogue. In his view, a country cannot produce solutions if those participating in debate do not take time to understand the foundations on which those solutions must stand. He said that this is why the electorate must think before reacting. He said that statements made without reference to facts can mislead the wider population because misinformation spreads rapidly.

Hichilema noted that when individuals treat governance decisions as casual discussion subjects, they weaken their own ability to evaluate results. He said that development is built through technical steps and requires structured planning. According to his message, the more society prioritises thoughtless reaction, the weaker national outcomes become. He said improvement cannot be expected if individuals approach complicated questions through shallow commentary instead of disciplined thinking.

The Head of State warned by that a society that thinks before speaking produces better outcomes than one that talks without understanding. He said that responsible participation is grounded in assessing information before forming a position, and that this must become the standard for national discourse.

  1. Thank Mr. President. In this modern era of first and foremost, a globally competitive and connected world needs citizens of any particular country to really be informed and they also critically understand the constant moving pieces. The public especially opposition denying themselves real substance information leads discontent in a wrong way. Misunderstanding policies and governance slows growth.
