Police in Kasama are investigating a serious road traffic accident that left a 27-year-old man hospitalised after being abandoned by an unidentified motorbike rider.
The accident occurred on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at around 18:40 hours in Misamfu area along the Mbala-Kasama Road.
The victim, Joseph Banda of Kasama, was riding as a pillion passenger on an unregistered motorbike when the rider lost control after hitting a pothole.
Northern Province Police Commanding Officer Simunji Mulonda who confirmed incident in a press release to the media in Kasama said preliminary investigations suggest the motorbike was speeding at the time, causing both men to fall to the ground.
Mr Mulonda said Banda sustained serious injuries, including deep cuts to the tongue, mouth, and right arm, as well as general body pains.
“The rider fled the scene, abandoning the injured passenger, and has not yet been identified,” he said.
He added that Banda was rushed to Kasama General Hospital, where he is currently admitted and receiving medical treatment.
He added that police have launched investigations to trace and apprehend the rider.
Mr Mulonda has strongly cautioned motorcyclists against reckless riding and reminded them of their responsibility to assist victims in the event of an accident.
“We urge all road users, particularly motorcyclists, to observe speed limits and exercise caution on roads with defects. Riders must also remember their legal and moral obligation to render assistance when accidents occur,” he emphasised.
Mr Mulonda appealed to members of the public with information that may help identify the motorbike rider to report to the nearest police station.
