Luangwa District Commissioner, Luke Chikani yesterday led commemorations of Kenneth Kaunda Day, urging citizens especially the youth to embrace patriotism, humility, and service in honor of Zambia’s founding president, Dr Kenneth Kaunda.
Speaking during the commemoration held under the theme “Celebrating KK the Patriot and Peacemaker,” Mr Chikani said the day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and the responsibility of current generations to uphold national values.
He said Dr Kaunda was a true patriot and was more than a leader who guided Zambia to independence through courage, unity, and an unwavering belief in freedom.
The District Commissioner noted that the commemoration aligns with the government’s broader efforts under President Hakainde Hichilema to promote national development, including the reintroduction of free education benefiting millions of pupils.
Mr Chikani emphasised that Dr Kaunda’s ideals extend beyond words, calling on citizens to demonstrate patriotism through action.
“To be a patriot is to serve selflessly, to place national interest above personal gain, and to work tirelessly for development,” he said.
He further described Dr Kaunda as a key figure in promoting peace, noting that Zambia stood as an island of peace during times of regional conflict due to his leadership and commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and unity over division.
Mr Chikani also acknowledged Kaunda’s role in supporting liberation movements across Africa, stating that his contributions earned Zambia widespread respect on the continent and globally.
“Let us honor KK not just in remembrance, but in how we live our lives as one Zambia, one nation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Luangwa United Church of Zambia St James Congregation Reverend Laban Chisala called on Christian to emulate the late President Dr Kaunda’s spirit to unite and champion peace among citizens.
