Parliament has ratified the appointment of 40 judges to Zambia’s superior courts following nominations made by Hakainde Hichilema last month.
The appointments include four judges to the Supreme Court, three to the Constitutional Court, seven to the Court of Appeal, and 26 to the High Court.
Parliamentary Select Committee Chairperson Sunday Chanda expressed confidence in the competence and experience of the appointed judges.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Princess Kasune said the appointments would strengthen government’s efforts to improve efficiency within the judicial system and reduce delays in the delivery of justice.
“We all know that justice delayed is justice denied,” Kasune said.
She further assured the nation of government’s commitment to appointing more judges and expediting court cases.
The judges appointed to the Supreme Court are Chalwe Mchenga, Abha Patel, Getrude Chawatama and Butler Sitali.
Those appointed to the Constitutional Court are Pixie Yangailo, Vincent Siloka and Getrude Imbwae.
The Court of Appeal appointments are Charles Zulu, Sharon Kaunda Newa, Ireen Zeko Mbewe, Bridget Chilombo Maka, Ruth Chibbabbuka, Conceptor Zulu and Susan Wenjalani.
The High Court appointees are Rodgers Kaoma, Ikechukwu Iduma, Makalo Sosoo Mwaanza, Davis Chibwili, Sylvia Munyinya Okoh, Katrina Maimbolwa Walubita, Mutafela Chimuka, Ireen Wishimanga, Claudia Luswili, Kaumbi Mutinta Ndulo Mundia and Thelma Nkumbiza Mumba.
Others appointed to the High Court are Maureen Tresha, Angelica Kennedy-Mwanza, Japhet Zulu, Diana Majokwe, Comfort Mulenga, Sombo Chinyaama-Kachaka, Sekelebaka Muwamba Kundachola, Peter Chileshe, Bubala Chibbonta and Anne Chisanga Nsama.
Also appointed are Ruth Lumbongo Mbambi, Kalifano Tiza Munsarije Manyepa, McRobby Chiwale, Kabukabu Sikwibele and James Bako Chipola.
